She is a truly special teacher who you can tell loves language and knows so much about it's history (and film!). One time she taught our class with the begins of what turned out to be laryngitis (over Zoom of course) because she wanted to make sure we had class. And it was as perfect of a class as every night! So thoughtful of her students schedules. She's amazing and really makes for a joyful experience. It can be a bit intimidating, especially as a beginner, but the curriculum makes you feel comfortable! Doesn't throw you in the deep end too early. Classes right now are over Zoom which is perfect with Covid. I took a class previously with Deirde in person, pre covid, and I think the zooms today are just as good (and so much easier on working parents!) Also the class size is small (5‐6) so you get to know your classmates and lots of opportunity to pratice what you're learning. The class is structured to be lots of talking that is guided by Deidre and the written lessons. You do your reading and written work as homework every week on your own. One bonus is that she also gives you lots of fun recommendations of things to try in your spare time: games with music videos, other lessons to watch on youtube, things to listen to in your car if you're stuck in traffic.

We spend a…read moreportion of each class just asking and discussing questions that are unknown to us before the start of class, so you get tons of time to practice talking on the fly. Plus, Deidre tailors the discussions to things she's learned about us personally, for instance asking how our dogs are, or whether a new job is interesting. Between classes, the written lessons introduce subjects at the perfect pace, and with explanations that only a native speaker or linguist can provide. Often, we learn how a word or phrase is different between different Spanish-speaking countries. This is something subtle that apps on your phone just can't do. Additional exercises are plentiful and well tuned to the week's subject. I've already recommended Live the Language to lots of people. It's smart, affordable, and personal. The format and instructor's attitude are perfect for folks with a job. Oh, and make sure to ask for a "guest lecture" from Deidre's mom, Kateri -- she's not afraid to tell you "how they actually say that."

She understands kids, and knows how they learn, and she generates an excitement for learning. She is always coming up with new ways to integrate their learning into life, and she has tons of great suggestions for supplements to what you do in "class". As a former almost fluent speaker, who is now pretty rusty, I have found it a great review for me to learn alongside them. My husband, who had a basic grasp from studying French in high school feels like he has learned more from her than he ever did in class. Nathalie has a gift and a passion for what she does. After moving to Austin and working for a couple years, I became keenly interested in starting up french again for international work / life and just to know another language. I found Nathalie after searching on craiglist and she seemed to have the most professional and credible teaching philosophy. Not only is she a warm, easy-to-talk-to , and all around great perso,n she is a fantastic teacher who shows you various different methods to learn and brings you a ton of supplemental resources (from french radio to comic books) We did roughly 6 or 7 classes together before I moved to San Francisco, but found her to be incredibly effective - as a result, I progressed significantly in my understanding of french and became much more competent at french conversation. I recommend her class to anyone who is interested in improving their french and has a passion for doing so. I was very slow at speaking and still needed some basic lessons on simple french language, yet she started right at my level and we worked from there. May I add, she is very flexible and will work with you depending on your schedule, level, financial circumstance. She is of the highest caliber and am not sure you will find anyone else more suited to teach French in the state of Texas. Oliver D.

I'm minoring in Spanish in college so I wanted to really immerse myself in the language and live with locals. Seemed like a good idea but I hated it. They seemed to only be in it for the money, cooked us wacky meals that I felt obligated to eat, had no ac(which was to be expected) but also NO FAN! I had to end up buying a fan and leaving it for them because it was up to like 98 degrees some nights. On top of that, my roommate and I were supposed to have 2 rooms but when we showed up they had turned one into a storage room. Additionally, there was only one bathroom for the entire place, shared between me, my roommate, the mom, the dad, their son, and their son's friend a lot of times. They also never cleaned the house once while we were there and there was so much dirt and bugs. This isn't to say I didn't love Madrid BUT if you are not liking your living situation ASK TO MOVE. They try and make it seem like that's a big deal(they did to me) and so I stayed but I wish I had stood up for myself and just asked to be moved. Besides the guy in charge of housing I found all the other staff very nice and accommodating. The classes were easy and the city was fun but think twice about living situations. They also sent me on getting to know the city tours by myself (extremely uncomfortable when it's supposed to be a group activity), and they seemed to have miscommunication between staff members as to their roles in supposing students in this program. It's all blame on the students and none on the company. Don't waste your money or time on this.

Our two-year-old only attended INIC for a few months in early 2022 and was in Toddler C. When we were just getting to know the school, Andrea (the director) was very helpful in answering all of our questions, provided us with a tour, and helped ease our concerns, this being the first time our son had been away from us for extended periods. During the first month, our son cried everyday, picked up different bugs, and struggled to adjust to the new environment. But everyone at INIC was so patient and understanding, working with us to get our son slowly acclimated to school. After about a month, our toddler started to look forward to school, especially to the special celebratory days. One day at home, he even started counting in Spanish. :-) Throughout this time, we got daily updates from his teachers, Ms. Karla and Ms. Estela, on how he was doing. When he finally started having good days, they were just as excited as we were, and it really felt like a partnership! Can't thank the teachers and staff at INIC enough for giving us the peace of mind when it came to the care of our son. We really miss them!

My family was part of the INIC community for nearly four years. I sent both of my daughters there…read moreas infants and previously left a 5-star review. I would have enthusiastically recommended this school. Today, I cannot. The issue is not the teachers. The teachers have been exceptional and are the reason so many families choose this school. Despite years of tuition increases and persistent concerns from teachers and families, the school has not made the investments necessary to retain them. In early March alone, at least 7 teachers left or announced their departures--nearly 20% of the teaching staff by parents' count. Both of my daughters experienced unexpected teacher departures in their classrooms during that same period. For young children, teachers are not interchangeable. They are trusted caregivers and a critical source of stability. When teachers leave, children lose important relationships and families are left helping them navigate yet another transition. During enrollment, families are told classrooms are staffed with a lead teacher, an assistant teacher, and additional flex staff available for coverage. In reality, my oldest daughter's classroom frequently operated at the legal minimum ratio of one teacher for fifteen four-year-olds. Multiple current and former teachers described being unable to reliably use sick days, vacation days, or even take basic bathroom breaks because there was often insufficient coverage available. When a school is staffed so leanly that teachers struggle to meet basic human needs during the day, it raises serious questions about how well both teachers and students are being supported. Teachers reported compensation in the $14-$17/hour range despite bilingual education being one of the school's primary differentiators. Comparable non-bilingual childcare positions in Austin often advertise higher wages. The result is predictable: teachers leave. Children lose stability. Families absorb the consequences. Demand for bilingual childcare in Austin far exceeds supply, and many families have few realistic alternatives once enrolled. Given that reality--and given that tuition has continued to increase year after year--I expected a greater commitment to investing in the teachers and staffing stability that families are ultimately paying for. Parents who attempted to ask questions and advocate for improvements--including efforts to reestablish the PTA--often received little to no response. While our family's relationship with the school ultimately ended following disagreements with leadership about these issues, the concerns described here are based on nearly four years of experience and conversations with numerous current and former teachers and families. The teachers are the school's greatest strength. The challenge is whether the school will make the investments necessary to retain them long enough to provide the stability and continuity that young children deserve.
