AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! ISA - International Studies Abroad is a horrible, unethical company that is only interested in making money and not the well being nor education of students studying abroad. If I could give it negative stars, I would. Studying with them was the worst choice I ever made in my life. I had studied abroad 4 previous times with different company and ISA has been the worst. If you are a student paying for your program out of pocket or a parent paying for child's education, beware of this shady company. Allow me to explain.
I, unfortunately studied a semester abroad with them in Madrid, Spain. The ISA team both in Madrid and in Austin are clueless and completely useless. In less than two weeks of my program start date, I had a horrible experience with my roommate, whom was also an ISA student. He stole from me, bashed me to everyone on my floor, threatened to hurt me, and also tampered with my food. I complained to ISA directly and they said they told me to talk to my roommate about it and if not they would move one of us, but that they, and I quote "Do not get involved in disagreements involving adult students". So I did just that. That made things worse. I spoke once again to my advisor in Madrid, Julio, and he said he would look into the matter, 6 weeks of hell passed, and yet they did nothing, during this time things only got worse. I spoke to everyone back in the office in Austin and their response was for me to "Hold tight and wait it out." Nothing ever got done and I was still living with a psycho roommate. They told me to pack up and move because I was the one to complain. I didn't understand why I was the one being ejected from ISA housing only for filing a complaint because I did not feel safe.
I asked why I was the one that was forced to moved and they told me it was just easier for me to move because they didn't wan't to get involved. Excuse me? What the hell am I paying you for? Your job is to help me while I'm abroad. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, and I felt horrible my whole time with ISA. Things got out of hand and I couldn't take it anymore. I agreed to move out. I had to pack up a semester's worth of clothing, food, course work. I had to miss a day of class to pack and a day to move. They told me they would inform my professors at Complutense University of Madrid. They did not. The housing they moved me into was dirty, the first day I moved in I saw a mouse in the kitchen, there were roaches in the bathroom, but I was exhausted after my move and after dealing with the ISA staff in Madrid and in Texas.
Due to my move and absences one of my professors was angry that she was not informed and took it out on me. She told me if she didn't get information from ISA she would fail me. I spoke to the USELESS ISA advisors and they told me she couldn't fail me and that they'd let her know. Well, they didn't let her know until 2 weeks before finals. So Professor Montilla was already angry as could be with me. She was so rude to me throughout the semester. Which brings me to my next point. Two weeks before finals, I was robbed on my way to school because the area I lived in was gross and dangerous. All my school work was stolen from me. I let ISA know, but they did nothing. I had to file a police report and inform my professors about what happened. However, the professor that had it out for me didn't care at all. I spoke to Jennifer Acosta from the ISA office in Austin about what happened and if there was anything they would be willing to do to help me out either with helping me explain my long issues I've had with my professors or returning my money, because the program was not worth the $16,000 I paid. She told me there was nothing they were willing to do, because everything that happened was my own fault.
Every day I spent in ISA housing, schooling, and contact with their "staff" was absolute hell! When I returned home, I found out that my stupid professor did in fact fail me. I contacted ISA about a grade and they asked to write in detail what happened, so I did just that. I highlighted all the points that happened to me. They contacted the professor for a grade change, but once again DID NOT inform her with the truth of what happened. She wrote back, never addressing the points I made, however, making her own points and refused to change my grade. I had never failed a class in my whole life before. I was graduating when I returned and had a GPA of 3.80, so that is the type of student I am, but ISA thought I deserved an F. It has left a smudge on my permanent record right at the end of my academic career.
DO NOT give this company your money. They do not deserve your business. Out of all the study abroad programs I've ever been on, this one was an absolute nightmare.
