A good place to cool off and workout especially in the summer, with varied machines, classes and sports activities. They have machines on both floors but the ones upstairs have more patrons. On a late afternoon weekday there were quite a few young people upstairs using weights. They don't have the latest machines but they do the job. They also have a 1/12 of a mile track that is adequate for walking or short distances. There's racquetball and Basketball courts that are also for volleyball and pickleball. In the middle is a small climbing wall that is often busy. There's also ping pong and Foosball tables. They also offer Classes like zumba and yoga; the yoga class was okay but the instructor could have been friendlier to everyone, not just certain people. They have reasonable prices compared to regular gyms and offer resident and nonresident daily passes. Staff was very friendly. Too bad there's no pool! read more

An amazing place to watch the beautiful Arizona sunset. It's perfect for picnic dates, with plenty of space so you never feel crowded. Lots of benches all over so you can sit and enjoy your view of the park. Great for feeding and observing the ducks, and it also has play areas for kids and tennis courts. We come here at least a couple of times a week, and I absolutely love it. read more

This place is amazing! My 90 year old grandma goes here to workout and has a fabulous membership. She was able to give me a guest pass so that I could enjoy Senior Cardio Drumming with her. I felt SO welcome in the class and could tell that there was a beautiful sense of community and inclusion. Everyone at the front desk knew my grandma by name and even wished her a happy birthday. They were excited to meet me and show me around which was so special. The indoor track and climbing wall are fabulous. This is such a well integrated all-ages gym. I feel so lucky that she has such a great place to go where she is treated like family and cared for! They have done an amazing job creating a welcoming and supportive environment. Plus, cardio drumming is a hoot! It was so fun and I burned more calories than I expected. Would love to return on my next visit to AZ. read more

Freestone has gone steeply downhill over the past few years. I know they've experienced an influx in memberships and they don't seem able to handle it all. The staff is totally and completely incompetent to the point where they can't even figure out how to check people in. If you're using a guest pass or paying for a day pass, good luck! You'll wait in line for upwards of 15 minutes at times and when you finally reach the counter you have to tell the employee how to do their job. I can't tell you how many times they have tried to charge me when I've presented a guest pass. Some of the staff is also racist and wouldn't let my friend's kids in for the moist ridiculous reasons, citing rules that don't exist. The Town should look into this. The cleanliness of the center has also been noticeably on the decline. I come here twice a week to take a Zumba class and the room is always dirty with fingerprints on the mirrors, dust everywhere, and clumps of hair and dust and scurry across the floor when the fan is on. I see them sweeping in the rooms after class but it appears that's all they do...and they miss half of the issues usually. The management has sucked all the joy out of being a patron here as they have the most ridiculous rules and it really isn't fun coming here anymore. It's really sad to see this place tumble down hill. read more

We did a 6-month membership. CONS: -the treadmill I used for the first two months had the EXACT same water spill stain from the first day I used it. This says something about the cleanliness and regular maintenance of the facility. -Doesn't feel like everyone is on the same page. When we called, we specifically asked if they lower the hoop so that we could play basketball with our son and that was the reason we bought the membership. When we went in, we were told that they couldn't. -The AC situation. I rented out a gym space to play bb and soccer with my son and there was no palpable air circulating on the far court. They have an industrial fan for court 1 during pickleball but nothing on the other partitioned side. With vaulted ceilings we were both disgusting and quiet after 15 mins. This is not a place you want to be doing cardio in the summer. -The cardio equipment and weights are extremely limited; That said, the cardio is rarely busy during the day. -There is no pool. -Having to wear a wristband as a runner on a hot summer day isn't the most comfortable. -It feels nearly impossible to rent a gym space and they give favor to the "men that like playing basketball" per the front desk. -We took a soccer class with BEST Sportsa" the facility and they partitioned the two courts and allow men's BB next to the class for the first few weeks. It was so loud the parents and kids could not hear the coaches instruction nor could they focus. To make it worse, after a few weeks, they even section the soccer class. You just have court and allowed men's basketball on the other side. The parents all agreed this was inappropriate. PROS: -Price -Outdoor element of the daycare. -Activities in daycare for It was great to have the option of a community center, but I think some investment into the center would much better serve the community read more

Well you know how Arizona is with it's long hot summer season. I was looking for a place to continue my daily walking and decided to check out the indoor walking track. I'd already been in for a drumming class which I feel in love with and this place doesn't disappoint. I ended up signing up for a membership because I found a few more classes that I enjoy. Everyone is very nice from the front desk employees to all the instructors. I don't feel out of place at all when I'm here and I love the motivation I get from others in the class. I'm getting in a workout at my own pace. I love it! read more

Up until last year, members were allowed to reserve courts. Many groups played for years together. Then, Freestone stopped allowing anyone to reserve a court. Therefore, every level must play together. Young and old, men & women, beginners & experts. Freestone! My second home. When I joined Freestone over five years ago, I came in shy, vulnerable, and hoping to slip in-and-out without notice; I didn't even know how long I would be a member. Little did I realize that Freestone is like one big family where the patrons and all the employees know my name, and always provide encouragement to keep going - that is Freestone's biggest asset. It has never been the bright, fancy place with the newest like many gyms try to be (it is a rec center owned by the town, afterall), so it is that collective willpower and friendliness of all the attendees that keep me and others coming back all the time. If I've ever had a billing concern or an account issue, the staff has always found a resolution to my satisfaction and without any pushback; they also take action whenever anything needs tending-to, be it extra cleaning or fetching a floor fan. I've taken classes with many instructors here over the years and they have all been excellent, namely Selene's Zumba classes, which always breathes new life into the center and gets the whole place thumping! I've exercised alongside many different people of all different ages, physical attributes, etc - everyone is able to go at their own pace, and no one is left out. Freestone has been the bright spot in my life I never knew I was missing, and I am thankfully not the same person I was before I joined, with marked improvements. I am in much better shape and much more confident now, and it's all thanks to them that I have finally gotten to this better state in my life. It's a place that the whole family (and friends!) can enjoy, and I can say without a doubt that we are all very lucky to have such a gem in Gilbert; may it evolve and flourish for many, many more years to come :-) read more

Amenities: 2 story indoor rock climbing wall which is amazing! They have 4 sides of the rock you can climb depending on what difficulty level you want/need. Indoor walk/jog/run track on the 2nd floor. It does a bog circle around the center of the 4 full size basket ball courts. I love the track because during the summer months, I don't have to sweat like crazy. I can do this indoor track, stay cool, and not be stuck on a treadmill. 3-4 full size indoor racket ball courts. Daycare to take care of the children so that you can get a great workout in. Showers and lockers you can use so after you get a good sweat in, you can take a shower, clean, and put on good clothes before heading off to work. Pool tables and t.v.s. Wifii access. Right in parent's backyard, the perfect rescue for the holiday suburban blahs. Very nice, new facility with mutiple intersection spaces and loops, a really fun design. Big rock climbing structure in the middle of the elevated jogging tracks, which also encircles a basketball court and shoots off to the weights and other courts. Great community resource, 5$/day for guests. Strangest thing: sauna rooms are practically sitting in the middle of the gym all exposed, rather then discourage wouldn't this encourage the exhibitionists? I would really like to give the Freestone Rec Center a five star review because it has the potential to be an awesome place to run. The indoor running track is really nice, as it is elevated above the gymnasium and the running surface is quite good. The problem is the management does nothing to enforce the lane usage and it is very difficult to run around all of the social walkers walking two-abreast blocking the path. It doesn't seem to matter what time of day you go, there always seems to be people walking side by side having a conversation as if they're taking a Sunday stroll through the park. The three lanes are CLEARLY marked: WALK, JOG, RUN. Nevertheless, many people ignore the sign and act as if the runners are being rude for maneuvering around them while they idly ignore the signs and block traffic. I'm sure these self absorbed trolls drive their cars the same way. Anyway, my biggest gripe is that the management of the Rec Center does absolutely nothing to enforce the lane usage and therefore I would not recommend this as a place to go for a serious run. It's a shame, because the building is really nice and if it were properly managed, it would be a real alternative to the treadmill. read more

They wouldn't let paid parents play basketball with their kids, said we were coaching and it was against their rules. we asked for a refund if we can't play with them, which no one shared when we paid. No refund was given - their response was "call JP LaCroix" and they passed out his business card like candy. Would definitely not recommend this place - service is awful. This is the best gym I've ever belonged to. It's very clean, the staff is extremely friendly and they have something for just about everyone. The rock wall is very fun, challenging and totally safe, the basketball courts were just redone and the weight room and suspended track are top of the line. My son goes to the kiddie corner while I workout and he's well taken care of. The only drawback to the multigenerational setting is that many members, especially the younger ones, aren't familiar with gym etiquette in the weight room. For example there is only one bench press so it should really just be used for benching and should be used in a reasonable time period so others can use it as well. Also there are many times people will leave their weights on the bar when they're done which isn't cool because it looks like it's still occupied and even when you realize it not, there is the issue of having to re-rack someone else's weights. Overall it is a fantastic rec center and I plan on being a member for as long as I live in Gilbert. read more

They don't have a lot of equipment but the ambience and cost has to means a lot! Clean and friendly with very low costs! My daughter has been attending Ms. Jen's tumbling classes for almost 2 years and they sure make the best out of what they have!!! It's about $42 every 2 months and my daughter has learned and had a blast doing it!! I have been going to Freestone Rec Center for about 3 weeks now, 4 times a week (YAY for me keeping a New Years Resolutions this long). Anyway, the first thing I should point out is this is NOT 24 hour fitness, or LA fitness, or anything you'd probably be expecting from a regular (and expensive) gym. However, if you know what you're getting beforehand, I think you'll be very happy. PROS: Kid's club, rock-climbing wall, indoor track, racquetball, pool table, full basketball court, indoor volleyball, variety of drop-in fitness classes, very inexpensive for a membership, day passes available, very clean CONS: Limited hours (especially Sunday), free weights, cardio, and exercise equipment are in limited supply, closed on holidays, lots of high-school kids during certain times While there aren't a lot of cardio machines, I have only had to wait once for an elliptical even though I usually go after work (which is the most crowded time). If you're a real fitness nut, body-builder, etc. then you probably won't be very happy here. But if you're like most people just trying to get in better shape or stay in shape you'll probably find it has everything you need. I think it's a great facility! read more

I wanted to post an update as I've been going to this facility for several weeks now (my original review was after only a couple of visits). I've been mostly going there to attend Zumba class, which I love. The instructor Myuly is fabulous. I generally hate aerobics but the Latin dance moves thrown in with Zumba makes it interesting and fun.
