But now a new owner has taken over and while he has spruced the store up and make it look really neat and attractive inside, the items the store stocks have changed dramatically. I would estimate that the store no longer carries about a fourth of the items I go in there to buy. Suddenly, it seems more like a convenience store than a real grocery store. Tons of junk food like french fries, desserts, sweet snacks, and fast food and less and less of real food. People who still actually cook meals find things missing when they run in for an item needed for a recipe. The frozen veggie section now is smaller with convenience food taking up the old space. It is as if the store is trying to make everyone in town fat and unhealthy. This is kind of a serious matter. I hate to have to drive a half hour to get to a healthier grocery store but we find that we have to more often now.

Wegman's has opened a few stores on Long Island, (not that near to town where I live), but haven't visited yet. Baked goods are awesome and plentiful. And their floral dept. is just beautiful. There are even times when I will run out of milk or eggs mid-week, and find myself stopping here for those items rather than shopping closer to home. In the several years my family has been shopping here, I have only had one incident where I was charged x2 for an expensive cut of Parmiggiano reggiano cheese but it was corrected during my next visit. The Wegman's brand organic items like the milk, eggs, and dairy creamer leave nothing to be desired. Not to mention their bakery! An absolute gem. Who needs a Whole Foods, anyways? Certainly not I. Keep up the good work, Wegman's!

My most recent stop was only to pick up some sliced almonds ($3.29) for a recipe -- an item that the two nearby Dollar Stores didn't carry. While there, I also passed a nice display of dried chili peppers, and bought some arbol chilis on whim ($2.29 for 3 oz). Relative to the grocery stores closer to my home, Weis has a far more extensive selection of items. For example, the fruits and vegetables, and salad bar, seem gigantic in comparison. And, as mentioned, I was able to pick up a specialty item, the arbol chilis that aren't available closer to home. Prices are seemingly a bit higher than home, and higher than some groceries stores headed towards Scranton but you'll save some on gas! One odd thing. I found on my receipt that I had earned a few Weis Rewards Points that could be used for gas at Weis' Gas-and-Go, Sunoco, or Mirabiro Fuel locations. However, the points were expiring the very next day (on Nov 25). I am happy to have this store in Carbondale. Staff were friendly. Check-out was easy. Parking was plentiful.
