We live around the corner and have watched the lines at this place for two years. Decided to try it out. The dog is cooked in some kind of a steamer/smoker/grill like thing. What ever it is, it comes out crispy (not burnt) on the outside with a nice snap when you bite into it. You can load it up with fresh toppings and spicy or reg. mustard. Water and soda a 1.00. Yumm. Though its 3.00 a dog so not a real cheap lunch if you go for two with a drink and chips. Oh go ahead, splurge. read more

This little stand right off the 129 rotary has good dogs and sausages. Their signature shnurble is high quality and you won't find it anywhere else in the local area. It is not really a late morning business but an early afternoon type of business. I have tried this place a couple of times before, and now that the weather is getting better I plan on trying this place again. I think the best part of this place is how they get that great charcoal flavor without burning one inch of meat. read more

I love Fred's Franks! My favorite hot dog is made by Pearl Brand and that is what they serve. The hot dogs are barbecued to perfection. They also have hamburgers and sausages. Plenty of free parking and in a nice setting. Pleasant people working there. read more

Today I found myself driving near Wakefield so I got off the highway at Rt. 129 to see if Fred's Franks was there. They had just arrived so I went into the side lot and parked. Although I hadn't been to Fred's since late Spring, I've been following updates about his troubles with the Wakefield police. What a shame. Don't they have any real work to do? I walked over to ask if the space they wanted came through and the man said no. He said they may have a location at the other end of the lake on church property. There is a little park at that end also. He explained how he can only be in his present lot for two hours. Two hours! Then he has to pack up and leave. He actually starts the green egg at home so it will be ready when he arrives. Even so, it still took him precious time to set up. He said once he had a very long line of customers and he went over the two hours. The police showed up gave him a hard time. So, hopefully the space near the church will come through. He said the church is on private land and he'll have to pay to be there where his current space is on State land. At least the police will stop breathing down his neck. Good luck with the church property space! Today, I finally tried a mini Shnurble. I usually get Chorizo or a Pearl hotdog. It was soo good! I wish I'd gotten a larger one. I also bought a 2/3 Chorizo and a Bratwurst with peppers & onions to go. They will make a great lunch and dinner for tomorrow. You know a place is good when you get cravings for their food. So glad I gave in to my craving today! read more

Great hot dog! This is a food truck, literally. (A pickup truck pulling his ceramic eggs used to cook the hot dogs and sausages.) A nearby small trailer has the chips, drinks, condiments and the 'staff.' Great find alongside the lake. The hot dog was yummy too. I'll be back. read more

Don't over think it. If you want a hot grilled hot dog, chorizo, linguisa or kielbasa fast then make a stop at Fred's.

After hearing about Fred's over the last 2 years or so we made it our 1st stop on a multiple hot dog stand food trip. Well to say the bar was set high would be an understatement. The jumbo dog itself was a beefy, smoky masterpiece. The roll, which you hold until your dog is ready, was a squishy delight. The condiments rocked!! If it takes me all summer I will replicate the habanaise. Man, what a great idea!! All in all maybe the best overall meat/preparation/condiment hot dog experience outside of Boston Speed Dog read more

Cannot go wrong here. High quality all beef dogs and a nice variety of Sausages. Today I had the Garlic and Cheese with Pepper & Onions. Delicious ! read more

Awesome place to grab a dog with a view. Monster dog is pretty big and will fill you up just enough. Fun experience overall.

For what it is, it doesn't get much better than this. Get the full kielbasa with their sriracha sauce and sweet cabbage. You'll thank me later. read more

Finally tried their hot dogs after bookmarking them for over a year. It is definitely a great place to try some hot dogs. I went with the crowd favorite "Shnurble". Went for the super size, I was hungry. When it was ready it was really super sized and filled me up pretty much. The folks were very friendly, the lady at the counter also helped with my sandwich, since this was my first time. This will be my go to place when I am yearning for a hot dog. read more

I don't even want to hear it is possible to make a better encased meat! Fred's passion is contagious and when he scores a 'Monsta' pearl frank and puts it into his 'green monster egg' hardwood charcoal fired grill - the result is bliss. Adding some of his Habanero Mustard or Habanero 'dijon-aise' is what elevates this miraculous meat to nothing short of art. The Kielbasa, Mexican Chorizo and Linguisa are also outstanding. Alas, if only he offerred authentic Spanish Chorizo (less spicy than the Mexican variety and with a punch of Smoked Paprika)... I don't care who you are or where you are Fred's franks are the best 'cause better is impossible! read more

Was lucky to find this on Yelp -- and right around the corner from where I was working. Shnurble is absolutely delicious (I got the mini which isn't listed on the menu). Everyone is friendly. Went back the next day before heading home. read more

Yummy plump grilled pearl hotdogs, doesn't get any better than this! Love to grab one before taking my daughter to the adjunct tot lot that overlooks the lake. read more

I was there early afternoon today, and overall, great customer service and delicious hot dogs especially their signature "Shnurble" sandwich. I got a Super Shnurble to share as the "Super" size was the largest available--that is, with three chouricos and one "Monster" beef hot dog. Most people in line had ordered the Jumbo Shnurble (two chouricos + Jumbo hot dog). The hot dog is juicy with grilled char and smoked flavor. The chouricos are tougher in texture, but flavor is a truly a spicy Portuguese sausage. The Shnurble condiments (sweet cabbage, mayo, and "sirachababa" sauce) are added fresh to the roll before meats are added. Delicious combination, and I look forward to coming back again. read more

AMAZING! I don't know where to start. Hot dogs are fantastic! They have amazing fixings (Giddy up sauce, habanero sauce, fresh cabbage, fresh sauerkraut, etc.). The Snurble is awesome (better come with a big appetite). All the food is super fresh. I was getting a hot dog on July 3 right before closing. Karl asked me if I wanted the rest of the buns he had left over for my family. I said "aren't you going to use them for tomorrow?". He looked at me like I was crazy and said "I never use anything but fresh rolls". Karl is super nice guy and hard worker. Solid small business owner working his butt off. I hope in 10 years, he has a hot dog dynasty! I highly recommend this place! read more

Went again last week while going to the park with my son and husband. They were great on asking how cooked we wanted our son hot dog

No way a hot dog cart is worth 5 stars. This is not a hot dog cart, it is a slice of grilled meat heaven! Yeah, of course there are hot dogs - regular and large Pearls - but the sausages! And chorizo! And grilled chicken! Sometimes, yes, even steak tips! That's not all Fred's Franks has to offer you. Food is served on a big fresh roll that was baked down the street overnight and picked up that morning. The vegetables - cabbage, onions and peppers - are fresh and crisp. The condiments are standard ketchup, mustard, and mayo plus several homemade sauces. Chips and drinks are sold as well. Yeah, it's a small place and sometimes the line looks like it's going to take an hour. It won't, though - it'll go pretty quickly, and when you bite in, man you'll be glad you stayed! read more

Love everything about this place - great food great people! Try the Chinese sausage and bratwurst , they are amazing !

My first visit in over ten years. Why did it take me so long? Excellent hot dogs with wide selection of condiments. Perfect setting. Having grown up eating hot dogs on Revere Beach, this was a great hot dog experience. read more

I'm not a Hot Dog guy but these franks are so good. I enjoy the smaller ones with a soda it is one of the best, cheapest and fastest way to spend lunch. Note 3/27/11, just meet the new owner Carl and had another great Hot Dog! read more

Overrated. Look, its hard not to make a good Pearl Hot dog, but they in no way enhance it. Dogs look overcooked in the smoker, but had no appealing smoked flavor. Was a good alternative place to grab a quick casual lunch, but the success has gone to the proprietors head. read more

Great hot dog/sausage stand right off the highway! Get the shnurble! Trust me, it's fantastic.

Great place to visit in Wakefield. Great dogs! great service! Fun!

I just want to say I hope to see Carl back In Wakefield this spring and I wish they would stop messing with him and forcing him to leave his spot. He works hard, keeps the area clean and provides sandwiches that people enjoy. All of the products are great read more

Comfort food at its best at an outdoor rest area along a lake! What more can you ask for! Go!!!!

The best quick stop for a grass fed beef burger, hot dog, or sausage! I love the condiment options. Something for everyone, unless you don't eat meat... The owner is a really great guy, and a fellow Trekkie so we make great conversation while he's cooking up my food. read more

This was a fun place for a summer friday lunch! Co-worker and I both had the 1/4 lb pearl. i used the srichacha hot sauce and relish. it was great! I'm not a huge processed meat fan, but every once in a while it's OK to splurge. Find a bench and hang out watching the lake for a while. Cheapest and most relaxing lunch around - $6 including a soda! read more

Had the "Shnurdle" a few weeks ago. One pearl dog with half chorizo surrounding it. DYNOMITE!

Excellent, delicious, hot! We tried Chicken& Gorgonzola and Hot. The ingredients and condiments are top notch, grilled right there on the big green egg. Fred's is not far from REI in Reading. Just around the traffic circle. This hit the spot on Sunday afternoon. We'll be back! read more

Amazing food and great story to Wakefields hot dog stand. Try the coffee and you will stay for the dog!

I was there today, and the dogs were delicious as always. I wonder what technicality in the law the stand is violating? While I was eating my dog in my car, the police came and shortly after the owner started shutting down the truck. Glad I got my lunch in time! read more

Myself and my son stopped in on the way to Maine for a quick lunch. Fred's never disappoints. I had a jumbo with habanero mustard and sauerkraut. My son had a sweet sausage with freshly grilled peppers and onions. Everything is cooked to order on a Green Egg Grill. Although a bit pricey, well worth every penny! read more

As good as the hype. Check the website if the weather is iffy 'cause they may not be grilling.

Best food in town! The signature Shnurble is incredible! Quick friendly service with a price the matches the quantity and quality of the food! Nothing better than a hot fresh Shnurble and a cold beer! read more
