I've been coming here since I was a kid, because when my mom was younger it's where she went. The food is always on the table quickly and it's always good. Just a meh experience. I've had worse, I suppose. There were two servers, one really rude one really polite. Food was just ok. When asked if I wanted to add cheese to my sandwich, to which I said yes, I was never asked what kind and was given pepper jack. Thought that was a strange go to cheese selection. Had high hopes for this place. The kitsch factor is great. I liked that there was a lot of diversity as well. But, we waited over 30 minutes for our food and when it arrived it was cold. Not once did anyone check in on us, even when we went to pay there was no "how was everything?". I certainly didn't feel like any of the workers cared about the customer. Decent food, but service is kind of slow when it gets packed. You don't really know what's going on when you first arrive, then you realize you are supposed to go hunt for a table yourself. The staff are pretty friendly though and apologized for the slow service. I just had the #9. That is two eggs, homefries, toast, and country fried steak. Holy deliciousness! The country fried steak was really tender, the homefries were crispy, and the coffee was plentiful. I took my 11mos old son with me and even he approves of the food! My meal with tip only cost me $10.15. The coffee came with it. I can't wait to try something else from there. Been going to Fred's Diner since I was a kid. It hasn't changed much since then, and that is why I keep coming. I know what I am getting every single time, and I leave happy. I don't want them to change because they don't need to. The people, staff and environment are friendly hardworking people that you just feel comfortable being there while enjoying great food for a great price. I myself get Chicken Dumpling soup. The diner is usually busy, and there may be wait. That's fine. There's a lot of regulars like myself so they know also they are going to wait. We know to be patient. It's worth the wait. The waiters and waitresses has the process down to a science and you should be sitting down at a table in a relatively short amount of time. read more

Eat here. This real deal diner is a must eat for breakfast or lunch. Pulled up on a grey and cloudy (therefore typical winter) day and frankly wasn't sure about going in, but all the cars in the parking lot convinced us to give it a try. So glad we did. The service was quick and friendly and the made-from-scratch food made us wish we weren't only passing through today. We sat at the counter and watched one yummy dish after another going out. Finally got a chance to get to Fred's for breakfast. Having long lamented the demise of the American diner in the Akron area, yet hearing rumors of this hole in the wall place over on Home Ave. and never able to find it - Success! In the end all it took was Yelp telling me the address and a little help from Google maps. That said - the place isn't hard to miss. As stated elsewhere, it's a small, cinder block building with a fairly non-descript sign out front. If you weren't looking for it, even with the cars in the lot, you could drive right by. Overall impression? Great diner experience for not a lot of money. The menu isn't complicated, and I ended up with the basic eggs, toast homefries and bacon. I also got a side order of sausage gravy. My dad was a huge sausage gravy fan, and diner fan, and everywhere he took me as a kid, that's what we got. So now I can't resist ordering it when I go to a new place. Fred's is small with only around 10 tables and 5 or 6 bar stools. Everything was fine, and I"m glad to see all the high ratings from fellow Yelpers. Too many times people lose sight of where they are eating and give some middle of the road restaurant 2 stars for the quality of their food. This is an old school diner and if you go there for old school diner food you won't be disappointed. My side of bacon looked more like a bacon octopus, and the home fries were the side of a softball. Nothing over the top, but a great value for your money. Why only 4 stars? Personal preference here - that homefry softball kind of was exactly that: a big mound of soft potato slices that were only crispy on either side from final cook. I tend to like my homefries a bit more separated and definitely like them crispy. If you like yours more on the soft side and one big mass - you'll love these. Also a small ding for the sausage gravy. Again, probably personal preference, but I like my gravy really white and creamy. This gravy had a slight grayish look to it and tasted almost like they had cut the dairy in it with water or something. Regardless - great place and 5 star diner experience. Would rate 4.5 if I could, and as stated, the 1 star ding was probably personal preference. read more
