My husband and I came for the 830pm, Wednesday night, show in Hayward. I am not sure what I was expecting but the experience was lackluster at best. Unfortunately.
When driving by this location there is a HUGE grandstand and the makings of "quite a show". After we purchased tickets and walked in we realized the quaint seating are for the show we were about to see. Apparently the grandstand is for the NATIONAL competition that happened a week ago.
The flier advertises professional lumberjacks. Um, 'scuse me but the three "pros" are still in high school or so they appear! In fact it felt like high school rivalry when they broke up the crowd into three groups: Hayward, Seeley, and Cable. The show is SO scripted. Felt like I was reading the script with all the directing commentary next to it such as "cock head towards right and roll eyes" or "swat at fly in front of face here". The MC, Lord help him, has a big personality but he's done this show at least 5,000 times and it shows but it's not fluid. The music used is choppy and the whole show is awkward.
The pole climb was the best but why in earth put a newbie against a "pro"?
Why has us watch a log roll on a log we cannot even see because it's so dark?
Why aren't there more lights for night shows?
And why is the parking lot as dark as a cave when there are people walking everywhere after the show?
There isn't much to do in Hayward at night so this isn't the worst event to attend. Go if you have kids. That's what it is geared towards. read more
