We were staying in Elk City, Ok and found Fred's steakhouse. The restaurant is rustic, not fancy. The waitresses were friendly and great at providing drinks , appetizers and food. The steaks and sides were delicious and the cocktails were tasty. This restaurant was a hidden Gen in a small town. Man what can i say i was skeptical of a 6.99 chicken fried steak but wow i was impressed! We were a large group with children because of a baseball tournament but they were on the ball . We were too tired to keep driving, so we decided to stop in Elk City for the night. And we were too tired to leave the hotel for dinner, so we got delivery. The chopped steak managed to be well done but still tender and juicy. Sautéed mushrooms and grilled onions were perfect. We got a side of green beans cooked in bacon. The latter were Southern-style - soft but flavorful. Fancy? No. Simple, delicious comfort food just like your grandma makes? Yes. And the best part? The cost was $9.99 for each of our meals. We have eaten in Michelin restaurants and famous dives across the US, so we know what right tastes like. Sometimes local steakhouses in small towns are disappointing. Amazing steaks!!!! We came to Elk City for the rodeo and parade, but I'm seriously thinking of driving the 2 hours again just for the steaks! We went to Fred's twice this weekend and both meals w/steaks were phenomenal. However, do not order the fish and chips, those were gross. Back to those steaks. My BF and I ordered the ribeyes medium rare as they should be and they were cooked to perfection. The green beans were fresh, but way overcooked. Seriously if you're going to massacre vegetables why not just use canned. That's what they tasted like. Get the baked potato people. The salad was so good we talked about it the next day. We are driving from Arizona to Indiana and tonight we stopped in Elk City. Knowing that we walked in at 9:15pm when they closed up at 10pm, we kind of felt like we would be given a stink eye for the time. Immediately, the hospitality was top notch. Our server, Jess was so attentive and polite!! My husband and I each got the 10th b rib eye and they were delivered so quickly. They were thin but not in a terrible way. They were possibly flame grilled?! I dunno... but they were soooo good! Sides were perfect too. Btw the rolls and cinnamon butter-- I wish I could have taken a tub of the butter home. The hostesses I will say probably need some customer service training as they weren't the most pleasant or most inviting. The wait staff however was great! Service here sucks. 3 years since I've last been here and in 3 years they haven't improved. We got sat. Waitress only came to the table to get our drinks, drop off food, and bring the bill. My mom had to go up and ask for Togo boxes and more silverware. Our waitress was in and out of the bathroom and constantly hiding. There was a table that got sat in her section and she didn't even acknowledge them until they were sitting for a while. To top it off she wanted a tip so badly I'm sorry. I stopped at Fred's on the way to Oklahoma City to get some food to go. I ordered two 12oz sirloin medium well, 2 baked potatoes, rice pilaf, 4 rolls and apple cobbler. Although I did cut into the steak, I didn't cut into the right end which was basically raw. The steaks, though weren't bad. The potatoes and pilaf was what would be expected. What makes it difficult to give a good rating is, I paid 4.99 for home made apple cobbler. I didn't look at it because it was wrapped in plastic. When I did open the package, in Oklahoma City, I saw a sliver of crust and half of a slice of apple. I took a picture. Not sure where to share it. This place is an awesome find! Good steak at great prices! The decor is a little dated and run down - the place used to be a Western Sizzlin. But the server was prompt and friendly. In addition to a great ribeye with a generous salad, we also tried the "Wood Chips" - potato slices with cheese, bacon and jalapeños. Not bad but a little greasy. And the dinner rolls with cinnamon butter were wonderful. We kept ordering refills until they wouldn't give us any more! If we're ever back this way, we will definitely return! read more

Fred's is the kind of place that used to be in every small town. The one everybody goes to because the food is always good and the prices are unbeatable. Stopped in for an early dinner on the way through; they're very close to I-40. Excellent service, good food. I had the chicken fry and the Babe had the shrimp skewers. Both were very good. The server brought rolls out to the table with a variety of butters; EXCELLENT yeast rolls! The prices were amazing. Definitely on our recommended list. I decided to give this restaurant a try. I had been to Fred's in Altus a few times, and honestly I was rarely impressed. However, selection isn't the best in Elk City, so I decided to try it. Don't expect the same menu as the one in Altus. I made that mistake. If you are into steaks and burgers, you won't have to scour the menu. I decided on fried shrimp with mashed potatoes and a side salad. Immediately, I was greeted with rolls at the table. Honestly, if I had only these rolls for the rest of my life, I would be happy. The rolls are yeast rolls, not too sweet, and served with sweet butter. Ever tried Texas Roadhouse? Essentially the same type of rolls, and so amazingly great. My shrimp came out hot and perfect. Some people aren't into cornmeal batter for shrimp; I myself love it. The cocktail sauce is great and obviously made in house. Mashed potatoes are served with white gravy and are mashed potatoes haha. I was pretty impressed with the shrimp. They are huge! My favorite part? The salad. Granted, it's just an iceberg salad. BUT: the croutons are the best I've ever had. That's saying a lot, as I used to make my own with beer bread. They use the sweet yeast rolls for the croutons, so they add a very pleasant flavor to the salad. Also, they aren't hard as a rock, just flaky sweet goodness that make you want more. I sat in the bar. The manager over there, Tyler, is absolutely great. Super attentive without hovering, eager to make sure you have a pleasant experience, and funny. He definitely went above and beyond for me...and even sent me home with yeast rolls and butter. Yay! One thing I must add: there is a serious lack of precautions for the current pandemic. I walked in with a mask on and received funny looks from most of the customers. However, the staff keeps their distance, and there are partitions between the booths. Stopped at the Best Western for the night, and this place was just across the freeway. I previewed the menu, and was impressed. Being from CA, if I can get a filet for 19.99--I'm in! I ordered to go, then joined my husband in the bar for a drink. The bar was relaxing and well stocked. We were able to drink a couple of Blue Moons and visit with another patron during our wait. He ordered the 4.99 chicken fried steak, which came with a salad, bread and honey butter. It looked really good. Then our order arrived. there was no salad (which I ordered), and no bread! I wasn't charged for the salad, so no big deal. But I really wanted the bread. So we got steak n potato only. Our neighbor at the bar, didn't want his bread so he donated it to us. The ribeye steak was very tender and had a great flavor. The price wasn't too bad, and it came with a side, they were out of baked potatoes so I had a nice fresh house salad with a good blue cheese dressing. The rolls were really good, and the wife said her teriyaki chicken was very moist and flavorful. The place wasn't overly packed for Father's Day, and the tables were spread out nicely so we weren't crammed in next to the other patrons.
