I would give 100/5 stars if I could! This place is exceptional. Our instructor Alvaro is simply the best! We bought a Groupon for a wedding first dance lesson and I'm so happy we did, we went with the Groupon as we just weren't exactly sure what we were getting into. I think we thought we would only need one lesson (silly us) but after the first class we wanted (and needed!!) more! I also didn't know at first they would help us choreograph and teach us how to do the dance to our song!!! we ended up buying a package of 8 classes. Tonight is class 7 and I am sure we will buy a couple more just to be sure we feel comfortable for the big day. I recommend starting early! Also Alvaro is so great with communication and tells us to reach out if we have any questions between the scheduled classes. You don't have to have any experience. All the other instructors seem amazing and friendly as well. You can't go wrong. They also have other classes for specific dance styles as well as social classes. If you haven't sold you yet on getting your first dance lessons here... idk what to tell you! :) read more

The staff are so nice and the classes are fun! We're learning a lot of new dances and enjoying the friendly atmosphere.

My husband surprised me with a date night dance lesson here. As soon as we entered we were warmly greeted by 4 different people. We had such a great time, as total beginners...our instructor for our private lesson was so friendly, helpful and made learning easy. We had such a fun time learning the basics of what I think was called foxy. Also, the person working the reception and booking area is also extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting a fun date experience or wanting to learn how to dance or if you already like dancing because we found out at the end they also do group dance lessons as well as fun dance nights. read more

I found them through Groupon originally but bought the package through the studio instead. I believe the owners name is Hunter but he did our lessons. We were learning 3 basic dances for my brother's wedding and Hunter had such a great teaching style that made us feel comfortable. We got homework which was fun! We're still needing to finish the rest of our lessons in our package but highly recommend doing this for anyone wanting date night ideas or is attending a wedding. read more

This place is awesome. I stumbled in about a year and a half ago and haven't stopped going back since. They always say hi and bye as you come and go, and the studio really makes you feel wanted, welcome, and like a happy family. Everyone is extremely kind, gentle, and happy. Happy truly is what they are, through and through. All the instructors I have worked with: Sam, Hunter, Alvaro, and Victoria are patient and friendly. They just want to see you succeed! The typical pace for their classes is about 3-4 moves in a group class, but they always try to make sure no one gets left behind. If you are looking for a place for personalized advice and attention, this is a great place for it. They also do something called 'festival' seasonally, which means fun opportunities to dress up at dance party. Thank you to this studio for becoming my family and uplifting me throughout dark times in my life. Protip: When you buy lessons or group classes in a pack you can get a discount/deal! read more

I am headed for a cruise and needed some dance instruction to look good on the dance floor. Real dancing not bouncing like most. Went to Fred Astaire dance studio and though a bit nervous. I was met by Hunter and Elly who were welcoming and sweet as punch. Elly was very kind and patient. Over two lessons she put me through the steps of four dances. Which for me is amazing! Studio has real dance floor, air conditioning anc a great sound system. Once my kinks worked out and rythm of the music with elegant Elly as a partner, shyness left behind and fun began read more

I feel deeply honored and privileged to have been paired with Pearl Bonilla, with whom I have been learning Bachata since June 2024. I have always been impressed not only by her professionalism but also by her extensive knowledge. When encountering something she doesn't know, she knows exactly where to go for information and what resources to utilize to ensure her clients' success. Pearl has a very positive and encouraging attitude. Her professional training and experience give her the insight and skills to teach complex multi-step dance elements that students might believe they could never master. When she has doubts, she collaborates with other staff members who possess the needed knowledge, and they openly share their expertise with her. She maintains high expectations for her students, yet these goals are realistic and attainable. Occasionally, Pearl skillfully manipulates situations to help clients overcome challenging phases in their learning. Her light-hearted and cheerful personality continually supports clients, including myself, during difficult times in their learning journey. I began working with Pearl in June 2024 for Bachata lessons. As someone who is not the most coordinated or dance-proficient individual, I initially worried that she might become frustrated with me. However, Pearl overwhelmed me with positivity, which truly inspired me. Throughout our lessons, she remained consistent and encouraging. At one point, feeling that I wasn't learning enough, I combined two 45-minute sessions into one 90-minute session. Under Pearl's guidance, I have genuinely blossomed in my dancing. I now synchronize my steps with the music, use proper hand signals, and maintain good timing. Feeling confident, I chose to expand my horizons and learn Salsa. Naturally, I faced the same challenges, but Pearl's positivity motivated me. She has a sweet demeanor and is an outgoing young lady. I am confident anyone can learn to dance, Latin or ballroom, under her guidance. I was honored to write this review, and I want to emphasize that my words are solely my own. These testimonials reflect Pearl's strong and diligent customer service skills. She is very detail-oriented and methodical. Pearl takes the time to think about the steps her students have completed and can analyze them from both the lead's and the follow's perspectives regarding dance elements. She is straightforward and diligent in finding accurate answers from knowledgeable sources when unfamiliar with a(n) specific dance element(s). The first-year staff works together seamlessly as a cohesive unit, focused on benefiting each client individually. Elly Gomez Four months ago, I expanded my repertoire of dance instructors by adding a second dance structure. Elly Gomez is a remarkable young lady who has been dancing for eight years and has an extensive background in competitive dancing. She possesses an incredible flair and a positively contagious attitude toward life. Elly is incredibly outgoing and knowledgeable about dance steps from both the lead and follower perspectives. She is very dependable and punctual with her dance-related assignments and appointments. If she needs to leave a lesson early, she always prorates the session so that no one feels shortchanged, and she is accessible for any last-minute schedule changes. Despite her young age, I am genuinely impressed by her musical and dance background. Her flamboyant personality and her calm spirit make her truly unique. Although she has room for growth, she has much to offer due to her passion for music and dance. I am privileged to write this for her, free from external influences or factors. I feel honored to have Elly as my dance instructor in Cha Cha and American Tango. She has a wonderful spirit and an endless supply of patience. Highly recommend this dance studio for first dance wedding lessons! Justine was patient, professional, and made us feel comfortable from day one. She helped us turn something we were nervous about into such a fun experience, and we feel very confident for our first dance on our wedding day. The dance classes were 100% worth it and created memories we'll always cherish. read more

We worked with Justine for our "first dance" routine, and what a fun experience it was! We found Fred Astaire through our venue during one of their "dance lesson" events for clients. Neither of us had any formal dance experience, but we really enjoyed the intro lesson and decided to sign up for one of their packages leading up to our wedding. We gave Justine our song, and she took care of the rest. She was incredibly patient and did a great job explaining everything in a way that made us feel comfortable and confident. I'll admit, I enjoyed it a lot more than i expected! We shared details about our venue and outfits, and she thoughtfully incorporated small touches into the choreography to enhance our dance. In just four lessons, we had our routine down pat. It was such a fun experience to share with my partner, and we had an absolute blast performing it at our wedding. read more

Best dance studio experience ever! My wife and I came in with little to no dance experience and a serious lack of confidence, but from the very first lesson, Alvaro Chagollan made us feel comfortable and supported. He was patient, encouraging, funny, and incredibly skilled at breaking things down in a way that made learning fun and stress-free. We also learned a lot from the group lessons and dance parties, which added to the experience. We never expected dancing to be this fun, and going to the studio, whether for private or group lessons, quickly became the highlight of our week! What started as nerves and two left feet turned into pure excitement as we built confidence with every lesson. By the time our first dance arrived, we felt completely prepared, and most importantly, we had an amazing time performing it! Our guests were blown away, and we owe it all to Alvaro Chagollan and the incredible team at Fred Astaire Dance Studios. If you're on the fence about taking dance lessons, look no further! This studio not only teaches you how to dance but also builds your confidence and makes the experience truly unforgettable. I 100% recommend Fred Astaire Dance Studios every day of the week! read more

I made it past 60 years without ever dancing and decided to step outside my comfort zone and just go for it. I went in shaking and sweating and wasn't sure that I would be able to go through with it. I was lucky enough to get Edith Gomez as my instructor. She was knowledgeable, patient and very supportive. Most importantly, Edith had a lot of confidence in me. We started with very basic steps and slowly added from there. That first lesson was one of the best things I ever did for myself. I left still shaking, and even more sweaty, but I was proud of myself. I really looked forward to my second lesson and went in with a lot of confidence, not that I could dance yet, but that I was now comfortable learning to dance. I can't describe what happened to me in the second lesson, how excited I was or how great I felt. I actually went out that night and danced with several women that I didn't know. For the first time I wasn't the one standing on the side watching everyone else having fun dancing. I have been very fortunate, and have had a great life, but overcoming one of my last fears and starting to learn to dance has improved it, and me, in many ways. I highly recommend Fred Astaire's if you ever wanted to learn to dance. Their methods and staff will gently guide you and build your confidence. Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can do it. Thank you F.A.D.S. and Edith! read more

I've been coming to the San Diego Fred Astaire studio for a couple months. First time dancing: and Hunter (the owner) and his staff have made us feel welcomed. As a pre-wedding gift to my fiancé and I, we booked a few dance lessons and was paired with our instructor, Alvaro. He was so patient and kind throughout the entire process. Alvaro helped with the choreography of our first dance. He was flexible with our song request, making adjustments to our dance lessons to fit two versions of the song I compiled. He really made my fiancé look like he knows how to ballroom dance. I feel confident that any couple would benefit from dance lessons from Alvaro. We highly recommend him as your ballroom dance instructor! read more

I got a personal session for me and my wife with Al. My wife is a veteran dancer who has a large amount of experience with several different kinds of dance. I'm one of those guys who basically has just one move which is to just stand there shuffle and way back and forth. That being said, we both had a fantastic time with Al as our dance instructor. He was fun, Personable, and was able to put things in the terms that as a novice was able to understand and then follow. For my wife. He was able to give her a few tips to help her improve and better handle being a partner with me. This was all just a few hours before our dinner for our anniversary out at Cafe Seville. In short order, he was able to take me through several different kinds of dance so that I could learn the different steps that blend on top of each other so that when we went out we would be able to have a fun time that evening and not be just a mess on the dance floor with my wife doing great and me just kind of standing there. All that being said, I highly recommend Al as an instructor and overall I will see us returning to the Fred Astaire dance studio. read more

My husband and I decided to give the Fred Astaire Dance Studio a whirl when we came across their Groupon offer for two discounted private lessons. We took our lessons with Noe, who taught us the beginner basics for the waltz per our request. Noe was friendly, enthusiastic, and patient. He had a wonderful way of putting us at ease and taking us through the steps. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, even my husband who previously dreaded the mere thought of dancing because he was convinced he had two left feet, couldn't hide his smile and genuine enjoyment during our lesson. Afterward, Hunter (the studio owner, and also an energetic and skilled instructor) explained what our pricing options would be for future private lessons, if we chose to continue, and how we'd be privy to group classes, which are taught on a frequent basis and cover all manner of dance styles (waltz, foxtrot, tango, cha cha, salsa, rumba, merengue, bachata, samba, swing) at beginner and intermediate levels, where group classes are available free of charge, so long as you take at least one private lesson per month, which is super reasonable and certainly sets this studio apart from many others. Given the options and based on our terrific first experience, we decided to go for it. We've now taken private lessons at Fred Astaire with Noe and Sam, who is also extremely personable, funny, and amazing at breaking down the steps. We've come to know and appreciate all of the other dance instructors as well (Diana, Elly, Brianna) who we've worked with during group classes. The entire staff, including Tina who manages admin and front desk, are immensely welcoming and amiable. It's Fred Astaire's dance instructors, their expertise and friendliness, their reasonable pricing for private lessons, free group classes, and the studio's overall fun and laid back atmosphere that has kept us coming back for nearly two years now! Since we've started, we've tried our hand at practically all of the dance styles in the studio, and we've been able to apply what we've learned on several occasions, such as at parties, weddings, cruises, etc. Prior to taking lessons, I used to have to drag my husband onto the dance floor, but now that he knows what he's doing, he really enjoys it, to the point where he's the one ushering me to dance at the first opportunity. The epitome of our dance education with Fred Astaire was earlier this year when they gave us the tools and confidence to prepare us well enough with the waltz to be able to attend and dance at a local, formal Viennese ball. We had a spectacular time, and it was all thanks to our dance instructors. We have loved the time we've spent at Fred Astaire Dance Studio and we hope to continue our dance education journey for many years to come! Cha Cha cha! read more

FIRST DANCE AS HUSBAND & WIFE My husband & I were lucky enough to have Hunter as our dance instructor. Though we were hesitant about dance lessons at first, Hunter put us at ease. Everything from his mannerisms, tone, diction, body language, attitude- made us feel comfortable learning how to dance together. Hunter was gentle with us, polite, professional, & NEVER judgmental or rushed us. He gave great insights, examples & metaphors which helped us figure out how to execute a dance together. He coordinated a routine for us to go with our song (foxy), gave us ample opportunities to practice to our song even amidst a room full of other couples, & paid so much attention to details. For instance, Hunter made sure to figure out the type of dress I'd be wearing to coordinate our moves, the dip etc. because it would be different depending on if my dress was loose/tight/poofy/off shoulder etc. Hunter is Yoda. Listen to him you must or face failure at dancing. To be honest, our final result (wedding day!) probably wasn't perfect with all the nerves & what not, but we hit all the steps, we had great posture, smiled & locked eyes the whole time, PLUS our photos & video looked amazing, all thanks to Hunter & the awesome staff at Fred Astaire! Most of all, we both had a lot of FUN & no one tripped & no one stepped on the other's feet. SUCCESS!!! Honestly, I couldn't be happier!! PARENTS' WALK UP/ENTRANCE DANCE Even my PARENTS came here after we told them how much we liked our dance lessons. They wanted to do a mini dance aka grand entrance to a traditional Chinese song. LOL. From what I was told, Hunter was very patient with them, coordinated a special routine for them to the song & most importantly, listened to what their vision was. As a bit of background, my parents are traditional, middle-aged Chinese people & have never really danced like this, ever! Though very nervous at first, again Hunter was able to work his magic on them & get them comfortable & confident on the dance floor. Wow! Let me tell you, EVERYONE was shocked when they saw my parents strut their stuff during the grand entrance/walk up into the reception!!! It was sooo funny which they did on purpose. Hunter did a great job helping my parents have the guts to dance in like that on my wedding day. For that, we are all so grateful. It was an UNFORGETTABLE entrance to say the least! My relatives were actually SHOCKED! FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE Lastly, Hunter helped my father & I create a dance routine for our Father Daughter dance. This was the 1st time in my adult life I have danced with my dad so I didn't know how it was going to go. Though at times I felt the teaching could get a bit fast (for me, I was trying to make sure I didn't get confused with the 1st Dance routine with my fiance), we were able to pick it up with practice & additional sessions. We both had a lot of fun both during our practices & at the wedding! THANK YOU! We would recommend this dance studio to LITERALLY ANYONE who wants to learn how to dance, whether it's for a wedding like we did or for no reason. You won't be disappointed in how friendly & approachable the staff are. If I can do it, trust me, so can you! TIPS As it gets closer to your date, make sure to wear the shoes you're both going to be wearing on your wedding so you can get a genuine feel for what it's going to be like! read more

What a wonderful studio. Just over a year ago I decided to take my first dance lesson as part of a quest to conquer my fears and I'm so glad I did. I was always the person who said, "I don't dance," but that's no longer the case. The staff is energetic and welcoming, eager to help you become the best dancer you can be according to your goals. There are opportunities for everyone, no matter your skill level or speed, such as affordable weekly group classes, practice parties, themed events and regular in-studio showcases where teachers and students prepare a short choreography to perform. There are plenty of competition opportunities as well. I highly reccommend this studio and my awesome instructor, Sam. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about this place! My fiancé and I wanted to take a few dance lessons before our wedding and so happy we did. Hunter was our instructor and was so awesome. My wife and I took lessons at Fred Astaire prior to our wedding a few months ago. Despite our lack of dance of experience, our instructor created a curriculum for us to learn a Foxy dance and a Viennese Waltz within a two month timeframe, both of which we danced on our wedding night to two of our favorite songs. Our dances turned out to be magnificent and were a breathtaking surprise for our guests who had no idea that we could dance so well. We had such a terrific experience with Hunter and his team that we even hired them to do a mini-performance of three songs at our wedding and afterwards to dance with our cherished guests. When we returned from our honeymoon, we decided that we wanted to continue dancing at Fred Astaire, and have been taking lessons 1-2 per week for the past three months. Under the tutelage of Hunter and his team, we have discovered a new hobby that we plan to continue for years to come. Additionally, the customer service and flexibility of the instructors is exceptional. Our instructors have always ensured that we are satisfied with the lessons. They also understand that we are busy professionals with a sometimes erratic schedule: if we are ever 10-15 minutes late because of traffic or a work meeting that went longer than expected, our instructors are not "clock watchers" and will give us our full time as long as they do not have another student after us; they will also allow us to reschedule our lessons if an unexpected meeting comes up that we must attend. Overall, we are very appreciative of our instructors' expertise, humor, flexibility, and customer-centric service model. Highly recommended! read more

I've been dancing at this studio for little over a year now and I can honestly say I have no complaints. I've read some of the past negative reviews and i understand some of their complaints but there are always two sides to any story. When you walk in the door the staff are all happy to greet you and make you feel welcome. Sure it might be a bit much for some people(negative reviews) but would you rather have it be the complete opposite? I get it but in my opinion it's not that big of a deal to not return. Elly has been my teacher from the beginning and she has been nothing but wonderful. I would recommend her if you want to learn the art of dance and do it right the first time. She isn't afraid to test your capabilities and she also has a good sense when your cup is getting full and changes course with your lesson. All of the instructors are great at their job and definitely care about improving your quality of life through dance. This has been a long review but I believe this studio to be more than worth my time. I read some reviews regarding the studio being money grabbers. I can say that I've never seen any of the employees try and hustle you to buy more lessons. Sure they'll ask you because private lessons is how you are going to improve much faster. Why wouldn't they? They are teachers and all teachers deserve to get paid to teach. If you want to learn anything the majority of the time it costs money so if that's a surprise to you then you need a reality check. If you want to learn how to dance well and learn to be confident social dancing then I would highly recommend this studio. Every day they teach a different dance(group class) and they are almost always able to teach you for a private lesson any time and day of the week. read more

Got a class on groupon for Valentine's day. It was so much fun we've kept coming back, tue group classes are great because you get to dance with other dance partners to figure out how to move with different people, which is always a plus at weddings when you are asked to dance with the mother of the bride or something. If you are scared, or feel like you have 2 left feet, or think this is way outside of your comfort zone, do it! You will not be disappointed. Briana, our instructor, is friendly amd very communicative, really helps break down your defenses and opens you up to learning to dance confidently! Well worth it, you will not be disappointed! read more

My wife and I have been taking private lessons from Hunter and he is a fantastic instructor! He is able to adjust the dances to your skill level and is very patient, encouraging, and motivating. He really cares about your growth and development and the classes are very customized so that you're comfortable and having fun. My wife had 0 interest in dancing but a friend got us a gift to take the lessons and we both loved it. It's because Hunter is able to make you feel comfortable and learn because he's a great at explaining and very patient. Not only that, their group lesson and dance lessons are free when you buy the private lessons so it's a great deal! There's no other place we'd go to learn ballroom dancing. We learned so many styles here. Another cool thing about them is that there is no pressure and when I got injured in a jet-packing incident and couldn't dance for a few months, they refunded my money without making me feel bad and wished me a speedy recovery. I know when I'm recovered and my wife and I are ready to start classes again, I'll only go back to them and nowhere else. read more

We learned out first dance wedding choreography with Hunter and he is a wonderful instructor. It took us approximately 3 months to learn and clean up a choreography (Viennese waltz) that we found online and wanted to learn for our first dance. This was about 14-15 lessons; we started first with a Groupon voucher which I highly recommend getting if you want to just get your toes wet or test the waters to see if you like this studio. We are very happy with our progress and result. We also got to showcase our dance near our wedding date sort of like a rehearsal for our wedding. Hunter, as well as the rest of the instructors/staff (Tina) at the studio, always greets us with a lot of energy and they have a very welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging culture in general. I would definitely recommend this studio to anyone looking to learn to dance and would consider coming back again to learn new choreographies for fun. Biggest plus is they're open on Saturdays so if you're not much of a weekday lesson person, you can book a weekend lesson with them! read more

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE GETTING LESSONS FOR YOUR WEDDING. Terrible place if you want to enjoy yourself. My fiance and I purchased a private dance lesson to learn a few steps and turns to our wedding song. They started off teaching us a basic step. We got about 45 minutes into our hour and a half lesson and we politely asked if they could teach us a few turns out of that step. They said, "No. The turns are intellectual property and they would absolutely not teach it to us, until our foundation was better." We made it clear that we weren't too concerned about our frame or foundation, but wanted to have a a few moves so we could better enjoy dancing to our wedding song. They absolutely would not budge and said we needed to pay for more lessons if we wanted to learn turns. Straight money grab. We were not there to become professionals, but just to learn a few things. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Waste of our time and money all because they wanted to hold us hostage for a couple of turns, so they could get us to pay them more money. read more

My fiance and I went here to inquire about learning a dance for our wedding. We DID NOT enjoy the experience. Everyone was so overly friendly and energetic I thought they might be on drugs. After the 10 minute mini-lesson so the instructor could see what level we were and how many lessons we needed, we were shuffled off into a small back room, and the top dog sales person was brought in to tell us that we needed their very expensive "customized" package which they clearly offer to all beginners. We were expected to sign up for $400 worth of classes without ever being allowed talk privately with each other. Very pushy. At least the consultation was free. Been here for quite a while. The staff is always upbeat and professional. With regards to another review, would you rather be at a place where the staff wasn't energetic or excited about that they do? This isn't a cheap place. There are other studios that are cheaper. But what you get is the family atmosphere that can't really be found anywhere else. If you want to go to a studio where you can get in and get out and learn a little dance but don't want to pay a lot, you might want to go elsewhere. If you want to be taught by staff that consistently go to competitions to improve themselves, and they are excited about their craft, this is the place for you. read more

I've been coming here for almost 3 years now and I have loved it since the first day. This is one place "where everybody knows your name" from practically the first day. The staff could not be friendlier and easy to get along with. You can tell that they really love dancing and want to get everyone as enthusiastic about it as they are. There are classes held every day of the week, as well as practice parties Tuesday and Friday nights where you get the chance to dance with other students and instructors. They also hold different shows throughout the year where you can show off what you've been working on to friends and family. I know pricing is a big concern for practically everyone now-a-days, but they will work with you as much as possible. Private lessons are definitely worth the price because they include all the group classes too. So the more group classes you attend, the more you get for your money. Plus, there are lots of opportunities throughout the year where they offer promos and discounts. If you really want to learn to dance, the personalized attention you get here can't be beat. read more

Hunter's been an excellent teacher, competition partner and friend, and has helped me go further in my dance journey than I ever thought possible. I also fully recommend Hunter as an instructor; he's the best! read more
