My friends and I bought tickets to attend a New Year's Eve celebration at this dance studio. The tickets were $99 each that advertised an evening of music, dancing, food, and raffle prizes. What was actually included was dancing, live performances, live singers, buffet, champagne, and a second round of Filipino snacks at midnight. Raffle tickets were sold separately, so it was a bit misleading. This was an older crowd than what we're usually accustomed to, but we made the most out of the evening and ended up having a really great time. I don't know how to ballroom dance, but several of the dance instructors approached me and led me to the dance floor. I think I did a pretty job for a newbie. At the stroke of midnight, we all toasted champagne and danced the night away! I think we ended up leaving around 1am. This was a fun celebration and a great way to ring in the New Year! I may have to come back and sign up for some ballroom lessons! read more

This review is for Margie Adam's Ladies-Only Dance Techniques class(Sunday afternoons, 12:30p-1:30p). I was nervous about going(picky about instructors and a bit shy) but am so glad that I found this class; it's a *unique dance instruction offering*! I've done group lessons at a number of dance studios in SD and OC and didn't know how essential this would be to my progress. My balance, posture, confidence and styling have all gotten much better(and I'm aware of how far I could go and feel inspired!). It's taken me back to basics that weren't taught elsewhere or clarified important concepts that I'd glossed over. I'm an East Coast swing dancer(Lindy, Jitterbug, Balboa), level 1.5(?). From what I can see, this class would be fine for beginners and West Coast, ballroom, salsa, tango, etc people. It is a friendly, supportive group and the studio is clean and well-lit. Some people drive from 45min to 1.5hrs(!!) away! I think it's worth it as Convoy has incredible food, foot massages, etc. While I enjoy this instructor, no one is for everyone. What I look for is dancing talent and style along with strong powers of observation and meaningful comments on how to improve. Personally, I do get rattled sometimes when being scrutinized but I suck it up because I'm motivated here and if I tell Margie that my brain is shaking, she gives me a break! I try to practice at home but occasionally struggle to remember details. I just do what I can and try to embrace the memory challenge(plus I write down notes after class). Not perfect for my learning style maybe but we can have different ideas about pedagogy and throwing away baby-with-bath water is silly imo. If you want to become a better dancer on your own or have a secret weapon so you can start dancing circles around your partner, this may well be for you! This class can change you! read more

I've been teaching at Dance Headquarters (formally Dance For 2) for several years. I also teach at another studio. Time and time again my students seem to prefer dance headquarters over the other studio because it is newer, bigger, and more sophisticated. It also has easy parking and a central location. Personally, my favorite things about Dance Headquarters are: quiet Sunday mornings in the gorgeous ballroom, the entertaining showcases every December and July, the friendly people, and the relaxed vibe. I took the dotlettos beginners heels dance class with Latte as the instructor and I did not appreciate how they were not able to teach us the dance with count, which is the easiest way to learn a dance. I kept asking for it and they would begin for a second then completely just ignore it. They also wouldn't wait on you and keep moving forward with each move and it made me feel like they clearly did not care about the people who were struggling. I've paid way less for a dance class before and got more out of it then this. I am only giving it 2 stars because the space itself was really nice and spacious but I was pretty disappointed with this class and will not be returning. read more

We had the best experience having Shawn coach us on our wedding dance which included a medley of salsa, swing and tango. Yes, tango! He took his time each lesson helping us get our technique down. The studio moved, hence the update. It is still one of the best studios in SD with at least three dance floors - a truly large one and two smaller ones. The floors are of excellent quality. The entrance is at the center of the side of the building closer to the Clairemont Mesa Blvd (the opposite side also has a sign, but no easy way to enter). The parking situation was not too bad for classes, although I expect that a major event will create a parking nightmare (there are only about 30 parking spots in the driveways on both sides of the building (open from Shawline St). The left (as seen from Shawline St.) driveway opens up into large parking lots of other businesses, hopefully they will not object to me parking there on the dance party nights. read more

This review is based on the location, not the teachers or any specific night since those change regularly. I've been here a handful of times for swing dance lessons and swing dancing in general, and really like the location. There are three rooms that I've been in, two smaller for lessons and one for open dance or larger lessons. The building could use some love, but since the floor is kept in good shape I'm happy and not including that in my rating. Parking is typically good, as they have a private lot. Other reviews mention where to park if that is full, but I've never had to find a different spot before. It cold be a fun spot if they served alcohol - though it is nice to dance with people that aren't drunk :) read more

What a fun venue! It's a wonderful large open space with a beautiful dance floor. The staff are so friendly and inviting. The Wednesday night dance is nice mix of club music for a variety of dances. Meh. Thankfully there were 4 guys there who really enjoyed dancing (and lead well) so it made my experience fun! I sat down more here than I have in a month combined in LA. The floor was amazing though; so smooth and easy to turn on. Why Meh? the overall vibe was very low, A LOT of the people in the room were sitting. The DJ (who was one of the 4 fun ones) would come down to dance then run back to DJ and we're glad he did. The people were seemed shy? The energy & excitement was nothing like LA but we still had a little fun. They were suppose to close at 1 but by 12:30 everyone was gone so we forcefully left too which we couldn't stop laughing about. This is definitely not on my list the next time I visit SD read more

WHAT AN AWESOME STUDIO! I love how this fun Latin/ballroom dance studio can also serve as a social gathering equipped with great multi colored lighting and a bar for drinks and socializing. My committee and I rented out the second floor space for a dance workshop and it was the perfect size. Their room was bright and spacious and even allowed for media so we can have a PowerPoint presentation before the workshop. Overall, the place is cute and definitely great to rent out if you have some sort of dance event. read more

There are many dance studios around San Diego, but this newest addition quickly rose to the top of my favorites. There is something comfortable and warm about the studio, starting from the people at the front desk, to the instructors, and finally the layout. There are two dance floors, a small studio best used for private lessons, and a larger main hall where larger dances are held. I went on Friday night for All Things Swing and had a very good time. This weekly Friday night dance starts with a free advance/intermediate half hour lesson, where a different style or a routine is taught every week. This is a great ice breaker, acting simultaneously as a warm up and a mixer. At 8:30 there is a beginner primer lesson, so even complete newcomers can dance the night away. During the week, there is a good mix of dance styles being taught. I've seen swing, tango, salsa and ballroom on the schedule, so there's something for everyone. read more

Even though it's over an hour drive to get down here, sometimes I just get the itch to go dancing down in San Diego....and when I do, we pretty much always head here. Friday nights here are called The Jam and there is plenty of good lindy hop to be had. The floor is always fantastic and its a good mix of music. Sometimes DJ's are brought in from different areas as well. I believe they also have a blues room upstairs 1 or 2 times during the month if blues dancing suits your fancy. It doesn't usually get too crowded...it's nice to have some room to dance! Everyone is always friendly, plus there is free water and snacks...what else could you ask for?! The only downside is that the dancing in general in San Diego seems to end so early in the evening (12 am here)...I guess I'm just spoiled by being able to dance until 1:30am in Orange County. ;-) read more

Dance for 2 is an amazing studio. It is in a great location, it is a beautiful spacious studio and very clean. The staff is amazing! We rent here for a dance fitness program and couldn't be more pleased with this facility. I have seen that they also have excellent and professional instructors. West Coast Swing Basics class at Dance for 2 was exactly what we had been looking for! I tried other classes and some in the area just don't cater to beginners- too large and too focused on learning complicated patterns too early. This one was small, just 8 people or so, the instructor and assistants were present and on time, and after the first class my friend, who was stressed out after every class at another studio, said we should sign up for the month. If you're attending an event and want to look good with your spouse or have been dancing a while and want a good basics review, this is the place for you. They are super friendly and you will feel like you really can dance after one lesson. Oh yes, and it's huge, clean, easy to park at, and has lots of great Korean food. read more

I absolutely appreciate the teachers' abilities to communicate, though I haven't formally partaken in classes, rather just their pre-dance warm-up lessons when I introduce people to swing. The social atmosphere is open and inviting; ceiling fans keep the place kinda cool the staff is knowledgeable and able to produce in depth conversation on dance and so forth. Torch Tuesdays has expanded to include Fridays - so now there are TWO nights of public salsa and bachata dancing each week at this studio - to complement public parties on other nights (such as ballroom on Wednesdays, Blues on Thursdays, Tango on Saturdays, and Jitterbug and Country on Sundays). In addition to a very nice dance floor, and ability to bring your own food and/or beverages to the dance, this is also a good place to buy dance shoes, or take private or group lessons in almost any social partner dance style available. 3.5 stars really, but I'll round up. My husband and I bought one of those deal things because we both wanted to learn to do west coast swing, and we like our classes at Dance for 2! Mary is a great instructor, and I feel more and more comfortable with swing (which I've never done before!) The class size isn't huge, so you get personalized attention. The price was great due to the deal, but even without a deal the prices are pretty good. The thing I don't like too much about the classes is that I rarely actually get to dance with my husband :( which is the entire reason that I bought us each a certificate. Had I known I'd be dancing mostly with a lot of other (generally way older than I am) guys, I'm not sure I would have purchased the certificates for us. I understand it's good for someone who wants to do dance competitively to know how to dance with various people, but all I really want to do is dance & have fun w/ my husband (not other guys, no offense!) So... I doubt we'll be going back to other classes here, but I would recommend it! Overall a great experience, just not the one I was looking for. read more

I had been reluctant to go to a milonga in San Diego because nothing could beat my old familiar Santa Cruz community. When I walked in, however, I knew I'd found a place that surpassed my expectations. I'm a person who'll be loyal to a venue if I feel at home. I was immediately greeted and welcomed with a short conversation and a smile. My experience was nice because it seemed like everyone I danced with lived and breathed tango, plus they were open and even gave me pointers when I admitted I was just a beginner. Although it is a slightly older crowd the dancers were easygoing so I still didn't feel out of place. I realized later that this is the first place I saw the Chacarera performed. Perhaps this contributed to my love for this studio, either that or the spacious floor, free snacks and drinks, or the elegant white drape lining the back wall. read more

on dec 29 2010,i attended the wednesday night dance hosted by mary manzella. i have heard so many positive reviews from my dancing friends that i decided to visit one of her dances. my understanding is that she has been hosting for the pas two years the 2nd and 4th wednesday dances. the friendliness of the dancers who introduced themselves to me immediately made me feel welcome. everyone seemed to have a great time dancing to a variety of rythms from ballroom, to latin and swing. the dance floor was always filled with dancers and i estimated that we had close to a hundred people attend that evening's dance. wow, that impressed me--especially for a midweek dance. for me, i am certain that i will be dancing there more often in 2011. i am giving it five stars! read more
