Me explaining that Rebecca NEVER discussed cutting our music with us and just unilaterally made a decision affecting OUR wedding dance
    Missy G.

We came to Rebecca after we purchased a $700.00 package for 10 one hour lessons for another studio, and our instructor decided to quit and become a flight attendant after our third or fourth lesson, leaving us with an unfinished dance. I will start with our positives: -Rebecca did change some parts from our previous instructor that were cheesy and not our style -Rebecca was on time -Rebecca uses PayPal and provides refunds when appropriate Cons: Rebecca came in when we had 1:32 of a 3:09 song, and that 1:32 we knew coming in had been learned in about 4 lessons. Thus, our dance was halfway done, meaning it should have been reasonable to expect that the dance could be finished in 4, at most, 6 lessons (to include some lessons for cleaning). Having danced competitively in tap, jazz, ballet, and hip hop from ages 4 to 16, I have never met a dance instructor who does not come into a lesson with a set plan and say, "I'm going to teach you one 8-count today" (usually, most instructors teach two 8-counts). Yet, when I asked Rebecca how many lessons we should buy, she was evasive and non-responsive, alternating between (1) refusing to tell me how many lessons it would take to finish our dance (so I would know whether to purchase a package, and if so, how many lessons in a package) and (2) pressuring me to purchase the largest package possible. Our lessons with Rebecca were (1) less effective (in terms of moving slowly and learning significantly less per lesson), (2) more expensive per hour, and (3) 15 minutes shorter than our lessons at our previous studio (45 mins as opposed to 1 hour). During these lessons, Rebecca often speaks really slowly, repeats herself, and belabors points. For example, usually you learn steps and clean later (usually the next lessons if the dancer couldn't adequately clean on his or her own at home after practicing) to be efficient, but Rebecca teaches and cleans immediately, which is not usually the norm. We also had to constantly remind/ask her to take a video of us doing what we learned that day so we COULD practice whereas our previous instructor would not let us leave without taking a video of us doing what we had learned that day. Between this along with her refusal to guarantee she could finish our dance with a certain number of lessons and pressuring us to buy the largest package despite coming to her with a halfway complete dance, I can't help but think Rebecca just wants to milk her clients/customers for as much money/as many lessons as possible. To make matters worse, Rebecca had to cancel our lesson because she was sick, and then, we got sick and had to postpone to the point that we started panicking because despite doing 6 lessons, starting in March (our wedding was July 2nd), our dance had 24 seconds left (from 2:45-3:09) that was not choreographed and we were a month or so away from our wedding date. While in a previous lesson Rebecca did say she was "choreographing the ending that day," I assumed she had started (and not finished) the ending because (1) when we left, there was still additional music with no choreography and (2) Rebecca NEVER discussed cutting the song we so carefully selected. If she had, I would have told her I did not want to do that out of concern that having the DJ stop the song at the right place is just another thing we needed to worry about on our wedding day. Thank God we squeezed in a quick practice because during that practice, our DJ did not, in fact, stop the song in the right place, which would have made us look like idiots. This additional stress could have just been avoided if Rebecca had just finished our dance. To make worse still, Rebecca was clearly upset I expressed frustration with her unilateral decision to cut OUR first dance song. Thus, rather than apologizing and finishing the dance, she ignored our attempts to schedule our last lesson, for which we had prepaid and never did the last lesson. Thankfully, at the very least, she gave us a refund when we demanded one. Long story short, please go elsewhere for your wedding dance. Rebecca wants to milk you for as many lessons as she can get, drags her feet, provides lessons that are shorter in time than other studios but also more expensive, and has an attitude.

    Dance lesson.

10 days before our son's wedding he and his fiancé decided they wanted to learn a dance for their reception. A mother son dance was also on the schedule. I looked into studios and found Dancing Together. It was close to home, and got great reviews, so we gave it it a try. The studio is located in Pacific Beach, and has parking! The inside of the studio is clean and well set up. Rebecca was our teacher, she was fabulous! She was patient, fun and listened to what we wanted to do. She kept us on a definite path, knowing we had only a short time to learn. I would definitely recommend Dancing Together, and will return, if I have any other dancing needs in future.

    Final Wedding Dance!

I found Dancing Together on YouTube initially. I was searching for wedding first dances and fell in love with one of the first few results. I was pleasantly surprised to see they were local! I didn't know what to expect but it didn't seem to be a bad idea. After six lessons I realized we needed more to really get a good grip on what we wanted to do. Wow, absolutely wow! Rebecca worked her magic in just 11 lessons. We went into our first dance feeling genuinely confident and able to do the full choreography she created for us. We only had a few weeks before our wedding and it felt like a tall order for her and us both but she absolutely killed it on the instruction end, just as long as we worked hard in doing everything she advised us to do (especially practice). She broke things up for us and made it easy, beyond that she was hilarious and we really appreciated her sense of humor (especially when we goofed up). Instead of frustration when we messed up, she was compassionate and patiently showed us in an interactive way what went wrong. Scheduling was so easy whether we did it in person or by text. I was even able to text her photos of shoes to help her advise me on what kind to purchase. We would definitely continue taking lessons because it's been such a fun experience and really has made my new husband enjoy dancing much more than he expected.

Silke is such a fantastic dance instructor!
    Jonathan V.

We cannot be thankful enough to our dance instructor Silke she just blew us away with her expertise in ballroom dancing! We knew that we wanted to wow our guests at our wedding with a beautiful ballroom routine and she provided us with just that! She was patient with us the entire time when teaching us the routine. She also made it very fun and when learning from her. She was very flexible with her schedule in order to accommodate ours when scheduling classes! Silke not only taught us steps, but she also taught us posture and how to create the effortless look with our arms and facial expressions. This really made a huge difference! She is an amazing dance instructor and we would recommend her to everybody. We couldn't have done it without her. Our family and friends are still raving about our first dance and telling us that it is the best they've ever seen! We couldn't have been more thrilled with the outcome!!

    Jennifer A.

We love being able to go out salsa dancing and know what we're doing! Thank you Silka at Dancing Together for working with us and making it so much fun! What a great teacher Silks is - starts from the beginning with some basic fundamentals and builds on top of those and before you know it were twirling and dipping!

We can't thank Rebecca enough for teaching us our first dance for our wedding! She knew exactly what to do to help us learn what we needed, especially since we are not experienced dancers. She was so patient with us and helped us understand the different steps and turns, explaining multiple times. We really enjoyed learning the dance and added additional lesson so we could do a fancy spin and dip at the end. :) We cannot recommend Dancing Together with Rebecca enough! Her passion and knowledge for dance really made this one of the most memorable parts of our wedding!

I came for the workout but ended up finding SO much more than that- a welcoming community, supportive teachers, lifelong friends, and my passion for dance has been re-ignited. Larisa plans so many fun events to showcase our hard work. There is something for everyone! "Vaudeville Fever" cabaret shows, three recitals each year, holiday parades, performances on stage at Disneyland, Fringe Festival/ Taptastic shows, community events, and so much more. There is never any pressure to participate in the recitals. However, if we end up in a class together I might try to pressure you into it because a lot of people end up discovering how much fun it is to perform on stage! All of the teachers have their unique styles and their classes are all so much fun. I always leave feeling inspired and energized! The unlimited package is a great option if you want to try a variety of tap and other styles of dance classes. I take ballet, tap (technique, broadway, and cardio tap), and sometimes drop in for jazz. $600 for a 16-week session and I took about 150 classes- what a deal! They also allow people to pay for one class at a time, or packages of 4+ classes to use throughout the session. Also you can rent tap shoes for just $3! I did that for my first class and then immediately went home and ordered a pair of my own since I could feel in my bones that this was going to become a big part of my life again (after taking 20 years off from dance). I could go on about how much I love Tap Fever. Being part of this community has truly changed my life and I am so thankful to Larisa, Diane, Chantal, Chelsea, Andrea, and Britt for keeping the classes fun, challenging, and inspiring! You can tell you all pour your hearts and souls into teaching dance! I highly recommend Tap Fever to anyone of any age and any abilities! Teachers are all more than willing to work with you and offer modifications that you might find helpful. No worries if you have never put tap shoes before. My dad came to a cardio tap class and it was his first time wearing tap shoes. He did a great job and was smiling the whole time! The routines are easy to follow and over time it is cool watching yourself improve and be able to do steps you couldn't do before. Thank you Larisa and all the staff at Tap Fever!!!

Bravo to the wonderful City Ballet and City Ballet Orchestra for a fantastic Nutcracker performance…read moreat the Spreckles Theater. While many culture snobs dismiss The Nutcracker as a lackluster showcase for the kids of a ballet troupe, City Ballet turned out a magnificently flawless version. The live orchestra complimented the dancing perfectly and I was amazed at the superb acoustics. Even from my seat-perched on high-I could denote every note played clear as a bell. I have also never heard a harp played so much in a symphonic treatment. The Nutcracker is performed all over the world every year at Christmas, by ballet companies large and small. For many people The Nutcracker is their very first introduction to ballet. And for many, it may also be their first introduction to a symphony orchestra. I love that all the little kids can participate on stage and begin the stirrings of a love for performance and art. It is adorable-year in and year out- to see Mother Gigogne come out in the 2nd act with that big skirt with all the little clowns that come running out from underneath. The Nutcracker-rather than just a dreary annual money-maker for most ballet troupes, to me, is so inspiring and endearing. I took my own kids every Christmas-just as my parents took me and my brothers. The Nutcracker is a cherished family tradition and City Ballet did it great justice. The Arabian, Chinese, and Russian dances were performed energetically and the Dance of the Snowflakes-amidst the floating snow petals closed out the first act on a beautifully fleeting note. The 2nd half had the lilting Sugar Plum Fairy and the other-worldly sound of the celeste. That instrument sounds so sweet-almost like music from heaven. I sat transfixed in my seat by such utter beauty and came away from The City Ballet's Nutcracker with a new appreciation for the culture and ballet artistry found here in our city.

This review is for their Nutcracker event rather than the school…read more I had a terrible experience last Sunday at the Spreckles Theatre. As I tried purchasing tickets for my family for the Nutcracker, I was told to speak to Joanne their director to see if my children would be allowed in. From the moment I approached her, she treated me with so little class and was so rude to me. I have a 3 year old who has been insisting to go to the Nutcracker with such enthusiasm for weeks. I understand children not being allowed to plays, but it's the Nutcracker for god's sake! And if they are not allowed still, she could've been a lot nicer about it. Joanne said allowing children was not fair for people who paid $80 for a ticket. Ok, so I guess it is fair for the ones who just paid $30? Not. She also told me to get a babysitter and come watch the play without my kids to enjoy it best. That is none of her business. The point was that I wanted to bring my 3 year old to it. As we were approaching the door, my wife asks another staff member to kindly take a picture of us by their giant Nutcracker and got denied! The lady said she was busy arranging tickets and after that he would take the photo. Too bad this review wasn't about the performance as I was not allowed in and had to explain to my son that he was too little for a family show... right? That Joanne lady should be taught some manners and be told to smile a little more.

My husband found Creative Dance Theatre 3 years ago when we were looking to move to another studio…read moreafter aging out of the current school. I messaged with the owner and office manager and my child was able to attend a class to see if it was good fit. It was. First year they took tap/ballet and a yoga class. Year 2 was tap/ballet and cheer/pop, year 3 is ballet/contemporary and Acro. They have a wide variety of classes, with varying age groups, offered daily at various times, making it easy to find a class to fit your child's age and schedule. Because it is a small studio, it is a more personalized experience. Class sizes are a reasonable amount, the same teachers teach year to year, the owner and office manager are very responsive to emails (my primary way of communication). The school dance "year" follows SDUSD schedule. Starting in August and finishing in May. The yearly recital is held in May and is optional. If your dancer wants to participate they can, but if they prefer not to do they do not have to and their dance "year" ends at the end of the current payment cycle (end of February). In addition to dance classes during the year, they have added dance camps. They host birthday parties and have a summer session if kids want to dance during the summer. Since the summer classes are a shorter length of time it is a great time to try a type of dance that your dancer may not be as sure of. With that said if your child is at an age where they can do 2 different classes with an age range for example ballet/tap 4-6 years old or ballet/tap 6-9 years old if you start in one class and feel like your child would be a better fit in another you can swap. I think it is dependent upon the teacher agreeing. I feel like when we switched to this studio my child did the younger and older class and the teacher is like "they would be fine in either" so we selected the older aged class. The teachers do a great job of teaching a group of kids with varying experiences. They are patient and explain the dance steps and make recommendations or modifications based on the child. The classes are a stretch, warm up, dance and then dismissal. Since this is a non competitive school each child is met where they are and allowed to learn and grow at their own pace. The other thing, I have enjoyed as well as my child is that while there is an "adult" teacher there is also a "student" teacher. These are usually students who are in high school who also dance at the studio. Many of these student teachers have been dancing at CDT since they were the age of my child! Billing switched last year from monthly to 3 payments spread out at enrollment, November and February. If doing the block payments is an issue if you reach out to the owner and office manager they are very reasonable with finding payment terms that work with your family and budget. If you take multiple classes there is a 10% discount. The dress code is dance wear but they are very flexible in what the kids can wear. No pressure to buy from them or a certain studio. For ballet ( my child is not en pointe) I have ordered leotards and ballet shoes on Amazon. I also ordered tap shoes on Amazon, as at this age the size changes quickly. The studio even keeps a supply of shoes at the studio (usually previous dancers shoes in good condition) so if your child forgets them or maybe in between sizes you can "try before you buy." All of the information about the studio, pricing, classes, attire is found on their website. It is easy to communicate with the owner and office manager. If there was a downside I would say that it is not being able to communicate directly with your child's teacher if they might be absent (due to illness). I typically just email the office manager and owner and ask them to pass along the message but there have been some hiccups this year with some information being communicated and needing a response in one class but nothing was communicated in the other class. It was easily resolved by an email to the owner and office manager, and I understand they are busy managing a lot of teachers, kids, parents etc but it is truly the only compliant I can think of. If you live in the area, have a child in the area I highly recommend checking them out!

While Oh La La appears to have great reviews for group classes, I would NOT recommend them for 1st…read moredance lessons for a wedding. First, I did not find the scheduling/payment process to be professional. We negotiated for a package of 10 lessons for $700.00 (1 per month up until our wedding). Suzie, the owner, asked us to pay this entire amount upfront via Venmo. I informed her that having never met her or the instructor or even set foot in the studio, I did not feel comfortable paying up front via Venmo b/c if they were running some sort of scam, they could run off w/ my money, & I would be SOOL. I said that I would gladly pay up front via credit card b/c if they ran off w/ my money that way, at least I could dispute the charge. To Suzie's credit, she was understanding of this concern, & she allowed me to pay for each lesson, one at a time, 48 hours in advance via Venmo. Thank GOD, I had the foresight to be concerned about this b/c as you will read below, our instructor abandoned us after lesson 4, without ever completing our dance, so if we had paid the $700.00 up front via Venmo, he could have run off w/ our money. My 2nd issue was the lack of organization & professionalism in scheduling. Because we wanted to do 1 lesson per month up until our wedding, we asked our instructor, Mehmet, several times if we could book all of our lessons in advance on the same day of the week each month (e.g., every 2nd Wednesday of every month). Every time we asked this, he just brushed us off & told us to text him whenever we wanted to schedule, which just made a lot of extra work for us to have to text him the week b4 every time we wanted a lesson rather than already having it planned. Next, on our 1st lesson, Mehmet spent several minutes trying to talk us out of the song we picked for our first dance, which frankly, I very much did NOT appreciate as I put great thought into selecting it. Thankfully, I stuck to my guns & did not change the song, & eventually, it won Mehmet over, & even he liked it. Given we purchased 10 lessons, I expected we would spend more than 1 lesson on the basics, but by lesson 2, Mehmet informed us he had decided to be a flight attended again but assured us (1) it would not impact our dance, & (2) we would leave that day w/ the 1st minute of our dance complete (which seemed rushed for lesson 2 of 10). He even offered to fly back for our lessons, but we told him that was NOT necessary, & if he needed to, he could pass us off to another instructor. Lessons 2-4 seemed pretty rushed, & frankly, seemed like we were going to finish our dance way too quickly, with way too many lessons left, but we figured it would be good to have lots to polish the dance. We had lesson 1 in Oct, 2 in Nov, 3 in Dec, & 4 in Jan, but we never ended up having lesson 5 in Feb b/c Mehmet was not responsive to our texts. This could have been resolved had he agreed to see us on a consistent night each month like we originally requested. He finally responded after I followed up 3x & asked if we could do Wed, 3/2. Even though it was a bad night for us (we had my mom's birthday dinner), we said yes b/c it had been so hard to schedule w/ him. It was also a little disappointing that he asked us to send him the video he took of our dance b/c he apparently, forgot the choreography. 1.5 hours before our lesson, he texted us that he was sick & had to cancel. While are 100% glad he would cancel if sick, he said nothing about re-scheduling & merely asked us to call the owner, Suzie. My fiancé called her, & she said Mehmet had told her the choreography for our dance was done! We still have over a minute of our dance left that has not been choreographed!!! My fiancé asked if she could complete the dance, & she said she had too much on her plate to fulfill Mehmet's obligations. While she did offer to try & find someone else to finish the dance, we informed her that we have been so disappointed w/ the whole experience that we would rather go somewhere more professional. Now, we are behind on our scheduled lessons & having to find a new studio. We have a 1st lesson w/ another studio this week, where the lessons will be $15.00 more per lessons, but we are fine w/ paying more for a studio that is more reliable & trustworthy. Long story short, Oh La La seems to have great reviews for group clases for children, but planning a wedding is stressful enough. We thought our dance lessons would be something fun to do together, but thanks to Oh La La, it's turned out to be one of the more stressful parts of wedding planning. For anyone looking for private lessons for a wedding 1st dance, please heed our cautionary tale & go elsewhere! I'm giving 2 stars b/c we mostly like the 2 minutes of choreography we do have but are very disappointed that Mehmet not only lied to us when he promised to complete our dance but then also lied to the owner, Suzie, by telling her he completed our dance when he never did!

I was looking for a studio that was welcoming to a child with little dance experience, but still willing to give them a chance and work with them to perform on stage for competition. A competing dance studio said their try outs were demanding and wasn't sure my kid would cut it. They also played music that wasn't very age appropriate. At Ooh La La, the owner's biggest belief is to provide a welcoming place for all. She made all the parents sign a commitment form stating there is no drama at this academy. She said we applaud every dancer's successes and help those who need some extra TLC. It is exactly the right philosophy for how I wanted to introduce my daughter to her first sport. And a couple of weeks in, I already see. The teachers are working with me to help get my daughter her extra TLC and my daughter is learning from older teenage dancers that she thinks are just the most beautiful ballerinas. Thank you for having a great studio!

Thanks Friends! I was honestly blown away! Have I just been watching mediocre and "bad" modern dance this entire time? The partnering work of the 2nd and 3rd pieces blew me away...mental note to self: work on upper body strength! The rest of the choreography was smooth, wellconnected, athletic, and beautiful; wheras most modern dances I've seen typically looks as if the dancers just got jacked up on Redbull, E and acid, then tossed on stage to do whatever they feel like. The music was interesting and went well with the pieces and lighting; it was not the typical modern dance crazy tribal or gothic "churchy" music, both of which I can't stand. Unfortunately the last piece was "countryish" music, which did not fit with the rest of the show and seemed very out of place; good choreography wasted on a bad piece of music! Overall, I was very impressed with the entire presentation will definitely be back to see future Malashock shows...maybe even take modern classes after a 9 year haitus...

My oldest started lessons at just 3 months old, took a short break during COVID, and restarted at 1 year old. She is now almost 6 and can confidently swim multiple strokes and the entire length of the pool. Most importantly, she is confident and safe in the water and has a great understanding of her own limits. My younger two both started lessons at 1 year old and are following the same amazing path as their big sister. Ms. Marci has truly become like a member of our family. she is kind, patient, and caring, and she genuinely knows and understands each child she teaches. Her passion for water safety and swimming skills shows in everything she does, and we are so grateful for all the lessons and love over the years. We are only stopping lessons because we are moving, and I know our next swim school will have very big shoes to fill! I cannot recommend this swim school enough. it has been one of the best decisions we've ever made for our kids.

What keeps us coming back is the outstanding community there. Every class we are welcomed by name at the front desk. Ms. Marcy the manager celebrates every student's birthday with a goodie bag that is adorable and thoughtful. All the adults are extremely friendly and supportive. I'm thrilled to not need to dodge any competitive parent small talk. The pool is designed for learning to swim with implements like underwater benches and bars, the pool's size and depth and large "steps" kids can play on before their lesson to acclimate into the water and have some fun. Every swim instructor is an outstanding person, but each has a different vibe, so you can pick the one your swimmer responds best to. (Personally I love someone kind and fun but firm with expectations. Emely and Laura have worked great for my kids). If I have a semblance of a complaint it's that you are not necessarily notified if your swim instructor is out that day. You're told at the desk when you check in for the lesson you're with a different instructor. Thankfully I've got flexible kiddos and we loved our sub and the chance to see my kids with a different teaching personality. Within 2 months my baby went from shuddering if you put water drops on his head to holding his breath underwater and gliding for several seconds *happily*. My two-year-old went from water wary to jumping into the pool and swimming almost an entire short pool length by herself. We love our swim lesson days!
