I called Chase Roofing to repair a hole in my roof and possibly get a quote. When the technician…read morearrived, he walked around, glanced up at the roof, but never got on the ladder to access the damage, and quickly quoted $1,000 for the repair -- but immediately pivoted to pitching a $3,000 "whole roof plan" covering vents, the chimney, and other work I hadn't asked about. I told him I needed to talk to my wife before committing to anything beyond the repair. He said "talk to your wife and I can do $2,000".
Instead of getting started on an assessment and getting a ladder while I stepped inside, he and his co-worker sat in the truck and asked for my email so they could send over a contract to sign. When I came back out, I made clear I only wanted the repair done, and I went to get a down payment check to get that moving.
That's when I was told the actual repair wouldn't happen for three weeks. This didn't match the urgency implied earlier -- I have an active hole in my roof. When I asked about the delay, he mentioned needing "special shoes" and other reasons. At that point I decided to take my check back and look elsewhere.
As I did, he called me a "weirdo" and said I'd wasted his time before leaving. I was disappointed that a request for a straightforward roof repair turned into a sales pitch for additional work, and ended with unprofessional behavior when I chose not to proceed.
