I was really looking forward to dining at this pizza place, especially because I was led to believe they had the best New York Pizza in the area. But what I discovered was it was nothing like a New York style pizza, and not at all the best pizza around. The fact is I lived for over 25 years in Boston, Massachusetts, and frequented the Italian neighborhood of Boston which is called the North End, that it is also widely known as Boston's Little Italy, due to its rich Italian-American heritage and abundance of Italian restaurants and bakeries. There, at the pizza place next to the Little Italy Market, I've had the best genuine New York style pizza ever. And I also visited New York frequently, and have actually eaten a New York style pizza in New York City often, so I guess you can say I know first hand the look and taste of a New York Style pizza. I arrived at Franks Pizza on East Main Street, Salem on a Saturday early evening, and parked at the City of Salem Farmer's Market Parking lot, conveniently located across the street, and where you get 2 hours of free parking, Monday - Saturday, 6AM-6PM. As I entered the place I saw an open window on the wall with one of the cooks making a pizza, I stopped there on the way to the main counter to ask to be seated. The person making the pizza was kind of rude and asked me to move on, not allowing me to see how he was making the pizza. When I arrived to the main counter, the server, who was a very nice gentleman, greeted and welcomed me and asked me to sit in any booth available. Practically all the booths were empty except one where two older ladies were dining at. I found this a bit odd, on a Saturday early evening, when good restaurant are already beginning to get full. The gentleman treated me well, handed me the menu, got me my softdrink, and took my order. I ordered a House Salad with Balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and a Special 12" hand tossed NY Style Pizza. As I was waiting I noticed there was no music in the background to make for a relaxing ambiance. Instead you could here the cooks back in the kitchen talking loud in Spanish, which I guess they didn't know I was understanding all the nonsense they were saying. That loudness coming out of the kitchen didn't create a relaxing ambiance. The salad arrived shortly, inside a plastic black bowl, and it was the highlight of the meal. My servered delivered it by placing it on a stand. At first it looked good, but a bit too white on top. It hardly had any sauce at all, and thus hardly any flavor from the lack of sauce and quality meats. The Italian sausage and pepperoni lacked flavor probably due to the low quality. It was full of cheese, that's for sure, but also lacking flavor. The dough of the crust was bland and burnt, not at all tasty. Some customers, for whatever reason, might like their pizza this way, and might not mind the loud noise coming from the kitchen, and the lack of music creating a relaxed environment, and I respect that. But in my opinion, with so many other good pizza places around, even in the least expected alleyways, I would not waste my time and money here. read more

I ordered pizza from Frank's Place while spending night in Salem VA. Asked the hotel clerk if she could recommend some local pizza options other than chains and she said hands down Franks! So I called and ordered a large Pepperoni and went to pick it up! They deliver for free but I needed to stretch my legs The guy at counter was friendly It was easy to locate and parking simple. Classic pizzeria vibes. The friendly staff were very welcoming and accommodating. The crust is so thin, chewy, a little crispy in all the right places, and better than any pizza I've had in a while. The sauce and cheese ratio is more generous than it has any business being, but the end result isn't soggy or overly heavy. It's just a good pie at a very nice price. We tried the arancini. They were not exactly "traditional", but they were delicious when dipped in the accompanying sauce. If you like deep fried things stuffed with cheese, you'll like these little balls of rice. Ordered delivery of the Philly pizza -- we are visiting from Arizona. Slight error on the delivery as they were going to wrong address so pizza arrived lukewarm and not hot. Crust is very tasty thought it needed more peppers and onions and thought the meat was chopped to fine which reminded me more of ground beef although it was finely sliced meat just chopped up too much. Pizzeria had great reviews so maybe it was just an off night or we should have ordered a more traditional topping pizza!! We will try to give them another try before we leave in June read more

For Nowheresville USA, the pizza was pretty dang good. I was in town bustin a few lips and needed a large pepperoni to seal the deal. Not bad for a one horse town. I was highly satisfied. But the old timer who left a crappy review cuz it wasn't like his Baston' pizza back home, needs a straighten out. When you leave a review that's a small novel and include where you parked your car and the hours of said parking lot, then you apparently got nothin but time on your hands to say you didn't like the food cuz it wasn't like "back home". The service was prompt and professional, my food was ready in 15-20 minutes tops. The interior simple, and inviting in a very old school way. Went with the Alfredo and added a side meatballs, along with house salad and balsamic and oil dressing some bread sticks and a cannoli for dessert with a lemonade for my drink. The Alfredo was good, creamy rich sauce mixed in with the Fettuccine pasta, a large portion and flavorful. The house salad was freshly prepared and tasty with the bals and oil. We recently moved to Salem. As avid pizza lovers our first food mission was to find a suitable pizza place. I am from NY originally so I take my pizza/Italian food seriously. After a few failed attempts at other places we stumbled into Franks. First, the location is great right on Main in the heart of Salem. Second, you walk in to the classic "kitchen in the front" design which is popular in NY pizza parlors. The staff is friendly and attentive and of course the pizza is great! Best we have found in town. So why 4 instead of 5 stars? Well that's my NY'r. Their calzones lack ricotta cheese. When I asked to have it put into my second order I was told "we got rid of ricotta a couple years ago". My brain is still trying to wrap around that... and their garlic knots are crap. That being said, we haven't found any place in town with good bread. Basically there is room for improvement. They have use app for rewards points called Toast Takeout. Seems the staff isn't really aware of its benefits either. The do offer outside dining (check in first) as well as a military discount. What can I say about Franks. Solid pie would fit for sure. Ordered a couple of XL's the other day. Meat lovers and hot honey pepperoni. Both were cooked well and crust is firm (hold the toppings) but chewy. Exactly the way I like it. The toppings were not overly generous but are of high quality so you know they are there without a ton of it. Sauce was flavorful and not drenching the crust. Good pizza and at $24 for an 18" it's good value as well Two items that are slept on Mozzarella sticks. I think these are homemade maybe? They were gooey and did not seize up as they cooled which was nice Deep fried mushrooms. Thick sliced portabellas battered and deep fried. I would go back for an order of these alone. After waiting an hour and a half + for delivery it finally arrived. Quite disappointed to receive the wrong order. We called and they were clueless. After spending way to long trying to explain what items were in our incorrect order we just requested a refund. Our kids couldn't possibly wait another hour + to receive pizza. A few mins passed when the delivery driver showed back up to collect the incorrect food that we had already open and made contact with. I'm sure they we taking it to the correct house. We've lived in Salem 10 years. This is the only place we get pizza! The buffalo chicken pizza is delicious. I like the hamburger. The pepperoni is classic NY pizza.
