A few weeks ago, the brakes on my wife's Mini Cooper started screeching, and the "Service Brakes"…read morealert showed up on her dashboard. As my long term, trusted, local mechanic was away for the month, I looked around for a mechanic that could service the brakes with OEM equipment. When I spoke with the service lead at Hogan Tire in Natick, he said "Sure. We can do that, and yes, I can get the OEM brake pads but we must also do the rotors. Oh yes, I can get the OEM rotors too." However, on the day of the scheduled service, he called to say "don't know what happened, but I couldn't get the OEM parts. I can get aftermarket parts and they are built to the exact same spec as the OEM." As my wife needed her car drivable, I said "Ok. Let's do it, paying $1,087 for the work." What a mistake. When I picked up the car, the brake service light remained on. Apparently an oversight by the mechanics, but quite prophetic. My wife immediately said "these brakes don't feel right." A week later another service-light came on, indicating that the brake fluid was low. By this time, my regular mechanic was back from holiday, so I took it to him. He said "this is the quality of brakes that I would put on a 1991 Toyota Corolla, not a Mini Cooper." New brakes. New rotors. An additional $1340. Obviously the first error was my choice of Hogan Tires to replace brakes on a Mini. Then I fell for the old 'OEM bait and switch.' My bad. Spare yourself the pain. Go elsewhere. PS, I reached out to Hogan Tire Corporate customer service to share this story. Crickets!

I hesitated, asked a few questions about applying that charge to eventual repair cost and then left mystified. When I got home, I checked with my trusted AI agent to find out about this. I was told that shops do charge to run diagnostics and that $209 was very high, especially given that the charge will not offset the cost of the repair. My agent suggested that I go to AutoZone and for $10 they can retrieve the code that might give a clue as to what the problem is. Among the possible causes for the engine-light was loose gas cap. Low and behold, that was it and for $10 I solved the problem that Sullivan tire would have charged me $209 to discover. Why didn't the technician at the front suggest that before trying scamming me out of $209 unnecessarily? Does he know that? I'm sure he does and Sullivan tire does as well. I'll spend my money elsewhere in the future.

For instance, today, they change my oil, but forgot to give me the sticker, so I had to come back for it. Later, I had detected that they broke my glove box Replacing the cabin filter. I went to Firestone over labor day weekend for two front tires. I left the car there at 10am…read morebecause I didn't want to wait around all day. They finally called me at 3:30 to say they ran there diagnostic and said I needed an air filter and new wipers, I said that was fine. They finally called me at 4:45 to say the car was ready, they close at 5pm and I live 25 minutes away so I said I would pick it up the next day. When I got the first bill I was quoted 480.00 for the tires and alignment. I was surprised to get charged 682.00 so the wipers and air-filter cost $200 dollars more. The biggest surprise I got was when I started my car up and the engine light was on, which was not on when I dropped off on Sunday. I complained and the service manager continued to gas light me and say it came there with the light on which is bull. So I don't know if they thought if they turned on the light they could hose me for more money or they screwed up when they put the air filter in. But all they did was blame me. So not a nice place to go.

I bring my Honda there for everything from oil and filter changes, new tires, and any mechanical work my car needs. Every experience has been wonderful. Their prices are always fair, and they have never once tried to take advantage of me or upsell unnecessary work. As a woman, that level of honesty and respect means a lot. Last week, I went in for a routine oil and filter change. I usually wait there because they have a comfortable waiting area with coffee and TV. I had been extremely busy with work and running on very little sleep. After I left, I must have accidentally dropped my credit card outside their building. Not long after I left, they called me to let me know they had found my credit card outside and safely held onto it until I could come back and pick it up. That kind of honesty and kindness is rare these days. Thank you so much to everyone at Ron's Tire & Service Shop for always taking such great care of both me and my car.
