I had a very disappointing experience at Bulldega on W. Parrish Street today…read more I stopped in because I needed an item for a last-minute client and this store was within walking distance of where I was working. The apple cider vinegar I purchased was clearly labeled $8.19, but I was charged $11.89 at the register -- $3.70 more than the displayed price. I politely brought the discrepancy to the associate's attention. He told me that management was not there and that he could refund the purchase, but he could not adjust the price to the price displayed on the shelf. Because I actually needed the item at that moment and did not have a practical alternative nearby, I paid the higher price. What disappointed me most was how the situation was handled. Pricing mistakes can happen. But when a customer points out a clear discrepancy, I would expect the business to acknowledge it and make a reasonable effort to correct it -- not simply give the customer the choice of paying the higher price or leaving without the product. To be clear, my concern is not the $3.70 itself or whether I could afford the item. It is the principle. If an item is displayed at $8.19, a customer should not discover at checkout that they are actually being charged $11.89. Customers deserve to make purchasing decisions based on accurate pricing. What made this especially frustrating is that this is a downtown neighborhood market serving an area with limited walkable grocery options. When customers rely on a convenient neighborhood store, accurate and transparent pricing matters even more. Being charged substantially more at the register than the displayed price -- and then being told the only option was a refund rather than correcting the discrepancy -- left me feeling taken advantage of as a customer. I understand that small businesses have expenses and that downtown pricing may be higher than larger grocery stores. That is the business's choice. Charge whatever price you choose -- just clearly display that price so customers can decide whether they want to pay it. I have photos showing the $8.19 displayed price and my receipt showing the $11.89 price I was actually charged. I support local businesses and do not leave negative reviews lightly. This isn't about being unwilling or unable to pay a higher price. It is about accurate pricing, transparency, and how a legitimate customer concern was handled. I sincerely hope management addresses both the pricing discrepancy and how situations like this are handled going forward.

What Trinity Food Mart has got going for it is being the only convenient store located…read moredowntown--specifically by the DIY district. Since I have family that live within a three minute walk to Trinity Food Mart, I have been there several times more then the average person. Trinity Food Mart is where it's at for wine and beer in a pinch, although prices are $2-$3 above most (for example, a six-pack of HopNosh will run $10.59 where you can usually find it for $8.99) but you really can't beat the convenience. So, if you're in a pinch for adult beverages and are headed into North Durham, Trinity Food Mart is the perfect place to stop. They also have milk, bread and the assortment of gas station snacks (although NO half & half!) They've also gotten rid of their 9th Street Bakery goods--so sad! According to the man on staff when I asked, 9th Street is selling to other companies now. So you won't be able to pick up a local cookie or muffin but you can still pick up a banana or a cliff bar!

Like a fox candle! Ha! I love seeing how they have new vegetables and produce every now and then. Back in the day before the pandemic (and maybe they still have this?), they'd have nights where there was a select menu and you could have a weeknight meal for an affordable price. Kind of like Cafeteria food. They gave you coins to pay for it, and the turn out was always so robust. It was a really nice way to get the community together and also try dishes that you probably hadn't had in a while, or even ever. I remember those events, being the talk of the town. My friends would mark on their calendars that it was a "no-cook night" and to meet them there. Fun times. I've been meaning to sign up for their owners program, that is on my to-do list. By donating a certain amount to the co-op, you become a founding member and help support the co-op. It's a sweet way to be involved and invest in the Durham community. I also love the parking situation at the co-op, you are never fighting for a place to park, and the parking spots are not razor thin. At the front of the store, there is a grassy area with picnic benches, and I find it so inviting. People are having lunch dates there, sharing snacks, and just enjoying the weather. I will say though, the co-op is one of those places that I have to remember to go to. Now that I'm writing out all that I love about it, I will continue to keep it on my mind.

My partner always gets the sausage egg and cheese. I have had both, and both are AMAZING! The biscuits here are BEYOND EXCEPTIONAL! For lunch, the bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mayo is amazing, but the regular cheese burger is just as great. Recently, they have started offering BBQ plates. Let me tell you, the Brunswick stew is ON POINT, and the BBQ is delicious. The hush puppies are great, as is the slaw. More importantly, the service is always both a delight, and stellar. From the owner behind the register, who always remembers our order, the fist bump, and the great attitude, to all those wonderful ladies preparing the food (and I mean wonderful, jovial, and go beyond the extra mile), this place is a hidden gem. Angie has become like one of our besties, and frankly, they are all great, but her attitude and fun loving self makes every trip there enjoyable! When it comes to ambiance, what you see is what you get. It is a service station grill, but it is always clean, tidy, and welcoming to customers. There is a lot of foot traffic, and always a busy pace in there. Based on the number of folks they are always serving in there, you can tell that others feel exactly as I do about the breakfast and lunch, and more importantly, the service. I do not think any of them in there meet a stranger. You must check this place out! It will certainly exceed your expectations - and did I mention... THOSE BISCUITS! OMG - now back to eating mine! My first go to is a chili and slaw dog and the price here is right. I got two for just over $3.00 and that's a deal in my book. I could have gotten it as a combo with fries and a drink, but just the dogs was fine by me. Their hot dogs are the red kind, the chili had a little bit of a bite so glad it wasn't smothered all over it, and the cole slaw was crunchy. All and all it was pretty good. The menu is varied from choices of breakfast items served from 6A-10:30A to lunch sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, and sides like fries and such. Everything is made to order. The food comes up quick and the staff is ever ready to serve the customer. They've got a few booths inside along the window that were nice and clean. What more could you ask for?

It's one of those stores that strike a bit of curiosity as you walk by, so much that your head turns and before you know it, you're browsing inside. We happened to see it since there were many vendors set up outside on a Saturday afternoon. We weren't sure what we were looking at when we first walked in, but the moment we saw all the goodies on the tables, we knew it was a boutique shop with lots of unique and local items. They sell all sorts of treats, to teas, to dog treats, to sauces, soaps, jams, produce to even ready made food (although I didn't get to take a peek at what kind). I do wish it were more closer to the street so that it could get more visibility, but I'm sure with how cute the store is, people who remember to make a stop here.
