The faulty equipment the Dr. was using had the battery die while the probe was inside the tooth and he yanked it out with force causing trauma to the tooth. The ordeal I went through was awful and I'm still dealing with medical issues from the infection and the threat of reinfection. On top of all that, they debited my bank account months after my procedure (without notice) hundreds of dollars for the portion of the bill that was to be covered by insurance. I get that this situation can happen, but not months after the work was completed and not after I was told in writing twice that it was covered. just now New Long…read moreread- I'm an adult woman who is absolutely terrified of the dentist yet it became necessary to have a tooth extracted and I reached out to Oglethorpe Dental and made an appointment because my husband had used them in the past and they were the only dentist office that I was aware of other than an oral surgeon that would do an extraction. When making my appointment because of my anxiety I was offered to be medicated and advised I would arrive- be provided a medication for anxiety and then have to wait one hour - fine. My appointment was at 9 so I arrived a few minutes early-c-rays were done and I paid for the medication which was a separate cost and then waited. About an hour later I was taken to a room and a numbing agent was placed on my gums and I waited for some time before the dr came in and he did several injections which I did not feel and he left me for the numbing to take affect. 40 plus minutes later he was back, all minutes where I laid there thinking about was about to happen and scared beyond measure. The dentist then puts the metal instrument in my mouth and I can still feel it. Be mindful that I am aware of pain Va pressure, I could feel it! The dentist then shoots additional numbing agent into my mouth without speaking t me- he gets my lip and the palate of my mouth and this time I can very much feel the needle "and" much of the medicine in the syringe shoots directly in my mouth and I have to spit it out. I'm again left to wait and in a few moments a nurse walks in ask me if I'm numb and then ask if I need to be referred to an oral surgeon and my response because I'm shocked is absolutley if that is what the dentist thinks- then another nurse comes in and tells me that she is not trying to change my mind but if I'd just stay very still he would get it and I would feel so much better - so I agree and then I again wait , and wait all while I hear friendly conversations going on down the hall- then finally he comes back and says ok I'm going to test it - again I can still feel the metal on what seems like a nerve. Dentist puts tools on counter, never speaks to me and walks out at which point I was referred to an oral surgeon. I was there from 9a til almost 1. I was treated in my opinion horribly and left in additional pain not knowing what I was going to do because they made it a point to let me know the oral surgeon was likely booked 3 months out. This morning I sit here in much better spirits because I was fortunate to get an appointment with Dr. Wright for whom I saw yesterday - I was able to be fit in within a week and survived on my antibiotic and some pain medication which luckily I had available because nothing was prescribed to me. I arrived at Dr Wrights office a few minutes before my 9a appt. I was immediately taken to a room where a nurse stayed with me 100% of the time . I was administered gas for my anxiety , Dr Wright came in and we talked, he numbed me up, we waited a few minutes and we numbed me up some more and before 10a I was out and headed to pick up a prescription for the discomfort I was going to feel these next few days and my tooth was extracted. This creates a recipe for what I call Disaster Mouth (pairs perfectly with Disaster Body if you also avoid the doctor). Needless to say, I was embarrassed and nervous before I finally made an appointment, but as soon as I walked into the office, all my trepidation and worry melted away at the warm and caring environment I was welcomed into. My awkward jokes were received with laughs as opposed to the usual blank stares I get, which was nice. The environment feels a lot more like you are visiting with good friends who just happen to really care about your teeth. Miss Debbie, who cleaned my teeth, made me feel more like I was at the spa getting a facial, only for my teeth. Tiny, little teeth facials, if you can imagine. Dr. Hartwig explained what was going on with my teeth due to years of maintaining a diet of mostly cake and candy, and gave me hope that my teeth wouldn't yet fall out of my head now that we have an action plan and a consistent maintenance schedule. At the end of my visit, I did not have to peel myself off of the chair due to me losing my body weight in sweat from the pain and anxiety I have experienced with previous dentists and hygienists. I was relaxed, happy, and dry as a bone. I went back the following week for some fillings, and the experience was just as pleasant as the first one, even though there were scarier instruments involved. Typically, even a minimal amount of pain is expected when receiving a giant needle to the gums, even with the most skilled hands, and I was prepared for that, but Dr. Hartwig performed some type of magic in which I did not feel any pain, whatsoever; not even a pinch! She was able to quickly drill and fill not just one but two of my teeth, with no pain or discomfort at any given point. Dr. Hartwig and her staff are nothing short of miracle workers in every capacity; they have managed to minimize the stress that often accompanies visits to the dentist, and have transformed it into a fun, pleasant event that makes you feel like you're winning at adulting. They used a vibrating water brush (like a very high-powered water-pik) that is awesome at getting around your gums, and instead of swishing mouthwash at the end you get foam mouthwash in a soft tray that you hold in your mouth for a minute. My hygienist was Peggy, and she explained (in real people words) what she was doing as she did it - I hate when dentists tell you that your T4 is colluded with your XMV 3rd molar and other dentisty words. She also didn't ask me questions when my mouth was full of instruments - I appreciated that. They had a TV in the room that I could put on whatever channel I wanted. They have an oral surgeon on site, which I unfortunately won't be able to review as one of my wisdom teeth is so impacted I have to go to a specialist. They also offer bleaching trays and 6-Month Smile, which looks like some kind of Invisalign. I would highly recommend them.

Here's a taste of what could happen to you, should you choose to let them be responsible for your dental care. I've had multiple fillings done at their office, with at least two of them resulting in re-dos because of the poor work done the first time around. I was even contacted after one of my cleaning appointments after they reviewed x-rays to come back and get another one repaired at no charge. Flash forward to beginning of January, I show up for my daughter's cleaning appointment and present them my new insurance card. My employer had switched providers for the new year and the informed me that they did not accept my new provider. That was fine. I had them cancel any of my family's standing appointments so that we could find a new provider that would accept our insurance in the area. However, they kept my appointment to fix that single filling they did incorrectly at no charge. I confirmed my appointment when the reminder came through and didn't hear anything else from them. I come to the office for my appointment and no details were confirmed at the check-in window, I was never called up. So I get back to the exam room with my tech and I ask her to please make sure that everything is okay with my filling being done at no charge still, because that was the original agreement and since they don't take my insurance anymore, I didn't want any surprises after they were already done working on me. I saw her review my chart where it said the filling was to be done at no charge on at least two different entries, but then she said that since it had been over a year they would no longer be able to do it at no charge. She consulted with the doctor and he confirmed. My question was why I hadn't been contacted previously and notified of this change to an already agreed upon price/procedure and they didn't really have an answer. My time taken off work isn't valuable to them and apparently, as a patient here, you are supposed to be familiar with all their internal rules and policies. Needless to say, I left and didn't get the filling replaced due to their inability to communicate their internal policies. Everyone I spoke to just had an excuse but no reason as to why this wasn't communicated to me even a month ago when they confirmed they were keeping the appointment. If I had known there was going to be a charge, or a statute of limitations on when they would honor their word, I wouldn't have bothered keeping the appointment or going in and wasting my time.
