My burger was delicious and the presentation was amazing. It also came out pretty quickly. Only let…read moredown were the fries which were cooked perfectly but smothered in enough salt to make them inedible, and the brioche- taken literally burger bun which was too sweet, soft and buttery for this burger (this was not a biggie though- I ate it aalll!) I was really disappointed not to get the mojito I ordered because "it wasn't the time for them". There was no time specified on the menu and it was 7.30 on a Friday night. I don't know what the real reason was (maybe short staffed and didn't have time to grind ice manually? Out of mint? ) I can understand those reasons but hopefully it's not that they just don't know how to make them because that's ridiculous. The server also mistook my veg burger for a steak burger and looked annoyed with US when she was trying to find out who they were for. Small mistake, but know what food you are carrying and don't get annoyed with the guest when you've got it wrong. I'll be back though- I don't like complaining, but I'm mentioning these things that really got to me in the hope that someone there reads them and fixes the can't-do attitude. Because they seriously downed my first visit here. The food saved the day.

The chips are steak fries, super thick and really cooked well. Some soft some are crispy. The wine was ok, although they couldn't understand my American accent and I couldn't h set stand theirs so I ordered a wine less complicated to pronounce. It was ok, a white Pinot Grigio. The ambiance is loud and lively. Someone will likely tap you on the shoulder to chat, but there are quiet nooks to grab a table if you want to eat in more seclusion. I enjoyed the loud bar and the rugby games playing in the background. But really the fish was fresh and the beer batter is sooo good. If I didn't care about my weight I would eat here a couple times a week!

The Britannia, you're alright…read more Situated on the river, with a large (pay and display) car park and ample outdoor seating, it's a great place to soak up some sun. We did just that. Popping in on a Sunday for a cold bevvie, we sat outside in the generous and very well kept terrace that looks out on to the carpark and more impressively, the river. There is another outdoor seating area out the back - so I'm sure, even at peak times, everyone can get to enjoy the sunshine. The interior is lovely; comfy sofas and a large fireplace covered in candles contribute to the homely yet modern/tasteful feel. It feels like an upper class chain pub. There's still evidence of the usual 'handwritten' (printed) blackboards and limited beer selection but overall it's a friendly place to come and enjoy a lazy afternoon tipple or a (what looked like a very decent) meal. They serve proper pub grub; fish and chips, burgers, Sunday roasts, etc. Everything seemed to be around £10 and the food that wafted past us looked really good value for money. The homemade yorkshire puds had us both dribbling a bit. There's also some quite nice touches with a jar of olives on the bar and dog treats available, if you're into that kind of thing. (It's a very dog friendly pub) As with so many places, the let down is the bathrooms - cheap plastic toilet seats, not even attached to the loo, waterlogged floor (I think someone had just mopped - it was one big puddle), pathetic hand dryer and cubicles so small you have to contort yourself around the door to shut it. They didn't seem to match up to the rest of the standard of this place. You're in Guilford, you're by the river, you're in a relatively nice pub... no doubt you're paying Southern prices for drinks too. Since when has a small lemonade crept up to £2.10?! If you're mid dog walk and looking for a sun soaked terrace and a reasonably priced proper pub meal (as long as you have tap water), then The Britannia is a winner.

The burger was decent, around 10 quid, and the portion of sweet potato fries was spot on in size and crispy texture. Just needed some salt. A couple of Christmas pints were available and otherwise an okay selection of ales and beers. I like the charmed interior, with the standard mahogany colored sofas and the fireplace. There are dog treats available and lots of seating so you can bring all your friend and seat them too! We were served very quickly considering it was the height of pre-christmas pubbery going on. The staff was extremely helpful overall and really attentive. What I didn't like is that a member of staff made our male friend take his hat off, which is fine, really. But when we pointed out that several women were wearing hats, we were informed that if it was part of a woman's outfit, she could but the same didn't apply to men. I found this a bit of a feminist fail. However, what actually bothered me (proprietor's rules rule, I suppose) was the snarky nature in which it was said to us. We were also told that we had a problem with this, we were free to leave. Talk about welcoming and hospitality and the holiday season... But I can't bring it down any more stars for the fault of one employee.
