If you like to hike outdoors, head over to Big Marsh Park today! Once a terribly polluted area of Chicago due to steel factories and industrial waste, Big Marsh Park has undergone extensive reclamation and restoration work to be the gorgeous natural wild space it is today! However, the park does not hide its past. Signs and relics of industrial destruction are left as reminders of what can happen when human industry is left unfettered without environmental regulation. Also, fishing and swimming are not allowed in the water. In addition to miles and miles of beautiful pathways for walking, hiking, and biking, Big Marsh Park also has massive mountain biking pathways, biking parks, and skate parks. Plenty for kids to come and have outdoor fun! There are plenty of spaces for picnics and outdoor crafts. Furthermore, there is a gorgeous museum that tells the story of the area, past, present, and future. It is new, informative, and clean. The bathrooms are green-designed and very nice. There is plenty of parking for visitors and public buses that come to the park. It is hard to get to with pot-hole infested roads, but well worth the trek! If you like the outdoors, learning history about Chicago, and exercise, head over to Big Marsh Park today!

Other athletic fields include a few baseball diamonds. There's also a running track. Kids can find lots of safe activities to participate in. There's also a pretty strong police presence with a precinct on the north side. It's pretty safe compared to the rest of the area. There is some interesting flora and fauna: In the summer I always manage to spot adorable bunnies at the Park. The Park is best known for its cherry blossoms, but there is other equally lovely foliage during other parts of the year. The eastern part of the Park abuts the lake, and it is easy to access the 63rd street beach through an underpass leading from the park to the beach. The beach is full of atmosphere, and often has fun food/drink pop-ups. Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Park. It is however important to be mindful of sound/activity levels so that it remains equally enjoyable for other visitors.

The playground area is set up for children ages 2-5 on the north end and 5-12 on the south end. The play area is super clean and well maintained. The kids stayed in the north end of the park and didn't tire of the unique climbing wall, and unusual things to climb and swing on. One set was a standing swing which I hadn't seen before but the kids loved it. This park has the usual slides, swings and such, but the unusual sets were well thought out and fun. There also is an area for picnics and a covered area where we saw a large children's party. There are facilities as well, but we never used those. Lots of benches and picnic tables. We will be back. Highly recommend.
