This is a great spot for lunch or dinner with friends or family. It is really close to the airport if you're looking for a spot to grab a bite to eat on your way in or out of town. The atmosphere is very homey. The Cuban sandwich is good. They make a good margarita too. The portions are large so I always end up with leftovers. They have a few local craft beers on tap and a rotating seasonal beer or two. They have a cute little patio. It is smaller so when they are busy there may be a little bit of a wait, but I have never had to wait very long for a table. read more

Tonight at Francies was FABULOUS. Our server Laurie was the sweetest person ever and the atmosphere is really cool. Reminds me of an old Irish bar. Dim lighting but very warm, friendly atmosphere. I got chicken tenders and fries with ranch and the ranch is to DIE FOR. Iowans.... this ranch is amazing. Anyways, my fiancé got the queso burger and I had a few bites and needless to say, it was fabulous as well. Very impressed with Francies. 10/10 would recommend. Arrive to Francine's about 1:45 on Monday for a late lunch. We were told to sit anywhere. Sat at a two top for over five minutes and went up to the bar to find our server. The bartender comes flying over with menus says the server will be right along. Female Server shows up and gets our drink and food order. Brings the two beers. No utensils or napkins. A very nice gentlemen from the kitchen delivers the food. We asked for utensils and napkins. Right away he returned with them. About halfway through our meal, female approaches our table with utensils and napkins. Yes, halfway through our meal. Female server cleared our dishes we asked for our check. No check. No check. Finally had to find her for our check. She delivered the check with apologizes of course. Our bill was $39.54 or something like that. The tip we left way under 10%. Food was delicious. Best French Dip in Des Moines! The whole menu is absolutely delicious as for your typical bar food menu. The French dip is my go to every time! They use a local south union focaccia bread & it is sooo good. Best crinkle cut fries along with the tastiest ranch! You won't be disappointed. Pictures don't do it justice. Stopped here on a fri. Afternoon around 5, with Covid-19 they were at half capacity and full. No problem we waited a bit and finally a lingering couple left and table and chairs were wiped down with sanitizer. We sat down and ordered drinks. Ordered food and it was received in a timely manner. Hot sausage sandwich was much spicier than I anticipated, but flavors were delicious. What a place!!! I had a coupe of hours before my flight and I found this place. They have a selection of local brews I had the confluence brewing Oktoberfest tasty! The grinder is made from Italian ground sausage and roped with gooey provolone cheese to keep it from spilling out. The sausage recipe is of the owners and it is sweet and savory just like it should be. The bread is soft and makes Thea sandwich come together nicely. My wife and I came here last night for our 1 year wedding anniversary and it was an awesome experience. We were on a budget and wanted to try a place we had never been to. We have spent the majority of our time in greater Des Moines in Waukee, so we never had the opportunity to "come across Francies." I had always seen it on the way to the airport, though, and thought if it's been there since the 50s, they have to be doing something right. My wife and I had burgers and every part of the burger was cooked to perfection. The bun was even buttered and thrown on the skillet momentarily. The fries were cooked perfectly. The menu was basic, but when you do basic, perfect, then there's no need to worry. $10 bacon burger with crinkle cuts made my anniversary awesome. The service was astounding, too, and they were busy! We got there at about 5:45. We were greeted by the bartender, then our server, and we never ran out of pop or water. We saw a number of people come in that were also greeted by many of the staff. If you want great service and food, for an awesome price, then this is the spot. I'm kind of mad at them for not advertising a little more to encourage me to come here earlier. You don't need directions to this place as it had been here a long time and deservedly so. Solid food, quick service and servers that know the menu like their own name. The place is small and the wait can be awhile when busy and when it's busy can be loud. But if you are on the south side and want a burger or something similar this is a solid selection. read more

Service was really great, as always. However, the quality of the food has sadly decreased over the past couple years,which is the reason for the 4 stars. We will still go there, but will be staying away from a couple items on the menu... one of the salad dressings had a big chunk of metal in it(?)... Francie's long history of amazing food and excellent service far outweigh the metal chunk in the salad dressing. I'm confused by the comments and high ratings for this place. I popped in for a casual dinner before my flight out of town. The place was pretty packed. The bartenders were friendly and quick to handle my order. The issue was the food. The bun from my burger was over toasted so much that it was black and very crunchy. Beyond that, the burger was over cooked as well. The food was anything but impressive. If I wanted to grab a quick drink or two perhaps I'd return but certainly not for the food. read more

My colleague and I wanted a low key, unpretentious dinner after a long day of travel. We were staying right by the airport so Francie's easily fit the bill. We both appreciated the local craft beer options on draft. He chose the Italian pot roast with a side salad, blue cheese dressing. I went Philly chicken and fries based on some other reviews I read. I did add a side of creamy Parmesan for dipping. The sandwiches were full of ingredients without being oversized or unnecessary. The creamy Parmesan was definitely the better dressing choice. We found the blue cheese a tad watery. If you need a laid back, watch some sports, unwind spot, definitely check out Francie's. It was the right fit for us. read more

After driving by this place EVERY SINGLE DAY and having the big green Francies sign in the face everyday taunting me saying "TRY ME TRY ME!" I finally found some time and went with my buddy to try this place out for lunch. Upon arrival you can immediately tell it is a bar spot. Seat yourself, TVs for the game, and limited amount of tables. The menu is very small and straightforward, we ordered the Toasted Garlic Foccacia to start, I had the Tuna melt sandwich, and my buddy had the Francie's Club. The Toasted Garlic Foccacia is like 4 pieces of garlic cheese pizza haha, it was very tasty! The tuna melt was excellent and Francie's club from what my friend said was very good as well! Fries came with the sandwiches, they were a bit too crispy in my opinion, but still pretty good. When we showed up for lunch, there were a few tables to choose from, 20 minutes later, there was a crowd of people waiting almost out the door for a table, THIS PLACE GETS BUSY QUICK! It's unfortunate there is hardly a waiting area for those waiting for a seat. They also appear to have good beer, but we did not partake in that aspect of this place, maybe next time. read more
