    ALWAYS play with your food!

Three words: Salted caramel doughnuts! And you get to play with your food by injecting your own doughnut filling. Coffee's great too. Cabinet cakes are so large you'll feel like you're Alice and been shrunk in wonderland. or the savory toothed, try the sardines, omelettes and kedgeree. Guaranteed goodness. Enjoy!

The other day I had half an hour spare between meetings in Ponsonby and so it seemed only right that I pop into Foxtrot Parlour to sample one of their famous donuts! Whilst I'm somewhat of a regular at Ponsonby Central, I had never been to Foxtrot Parlour before. It's pretty cute. There's scuffed wooden tables adorned with freshly cut foxgloves and jar upon jar filled with glorious looking sweet treats. Not to mention there's a cabinet full of savoury delights (pies, frittata and the like)... But I was a (wo)man on a mission and spotting the sugary treats, I placed my order, opting for salted caramel over berry coulis and chocolate. The donut took a little while to come out but when it did I was enthralled. The needle was massive (see picture) and salted caramel was oozing out the end. I must admit, injecting the donut was definitely the highlight but by no means does that mean the donut itself was lackluster - it was soft and the caramel infused through dough. If I am being honest, it was a little but sickly but in a good way...if you know what I mean. I am quite looking forward to coming back to try their brunch/lunch menu, which sounds/looks phenomenal!

I got waffles obviously because I'm very into that kind of thing. The waffles came with coconut cream and maple syrup and come banana. I could live without the banana. I was pretty impressed with the selection they had in their counter. Their pies looked really really incredible. Anyway, so the waffles came and they were super decadent and they were on a banana leaf and the syrup came in some kind of mini-artesian jug thing which was pretty baller. The whole meal came on a little piece of wood. Which sounds really great, because who doesn't like eating off of wood like a caveman or something. But then actually it was pretty stupid because you cant really clean wood very well, can you, and so every meal that's been eaten off of those pieces of wood has kind of seeped into it and will probably always be there, lurking beneath some poor sap's waffles. What I'm trying to say is that my waffles tasted like onion.

Foxtrot Parlour, located in the heart of Ponsonby. One of Auckland's hidden gems.

This hidden little gem can be found in Auckland's new Ponsonby Central. This gorgeous little café has the most delicious looking cabinet food with a large selection of both sweet and savoury items. Unfortunately for me I didn't get to try the food on their menu, however I found myself getting food envy when I saw the meal the lady next to me ordered. AMAZING! I did however have their 'Green' smoothie. One word, YUM! It's a blend of all things good for you, spinach, mint, kiwifruit etc. I would recommend this to everyone who comes here. Incredibly refreshing and healthy! The best combination on a scorching hot summers day. I didn't have coffee here, however my girlfriend from Melbourne thought it was nothing out of the ordinary. This place is in a lovely location, with great surroundings. Here is there Facebook page www.facebook.com/FoxtrotParlour.

Foxtrot is becoming more and more of a favourite of mine. It's always packed with people, which is a great sign because we all know how picky Ponsonby-ites can be! Their menu is out-of-this-world. Gluten-free, vegetarian, dairy-free delights meant I stood at the counter for a long time battling with my decision. I settled on the Pulled Pork Sandwich on gluten free bread, and it was so delicious. My mum had the Waffles, which had me instantly pulling out my phone to capture the presentation. They came on a wooden board with a cute jug of maple syrup and the cherry on top was well, the cherry on top. In my opinion, a cafe is only as good as its décor, and Foxtrot are so winning in this area.

The Akaroa and a coffee at Foxtrot Parlour.

I came to Foxtrot Parlour because I'd heard it had coddled eggs on the menu and I was curious as to what they were. For those who don't know, coddled eggs are basically eggs baked in a little ceramic/glass dish, and I think there must be cream in there somewhere because they taste good, and everyone who is anyone knows that cream improves every meal. Foxtrot Parlour is nestled within the new dining establishment du jour, 'Ponsonby Central'. It's at the back, next to the organic fruit and vegetables. Ever since that coddled eggs visit, it's been one of my favourite places to go. I've tried the Akaroa sandwich, which is my favourite - a crusty baguette halved and stuffed with butter, rocket, avocado and salmon gravlax (Note: you cannot eat it gracefully), and the Bahn Mi which is good, but not as good as the Akaroa. Yesterday I had a good chicken and leek pie that was too big to finish. The cabinet is filled with treats that don't support weight loss - russian fudge, salted caramel meringues, lemon loaf - and next to that is a Kapiti ice-cream bar where you can get a cup of icecream with toppings of your choice. It's super cute. I have yet to indulge in anything sweet there, but trust me - I will. Insider Tip: You can sit outside on one of the shared tables, grab food from Foxtrot Parlour and an organic juice from the juice bar (which is really, really good) a few metres away. Perfect meal.

Triple shot and super healthy Anzac biscuit!:)

Foxtrot Parlour is the perfect place for meeting a friend or two, and business appointments too. They serve hot beverages in vintage, delicate cups and saucers, the same applies for there delicious 'patisserie-style' fare of meringues, homemade-style cookies, gourmet quiches and 'custom-made filling' for there exquisite donuts. Nothing is a problem, including charging my iPhone!! The decor is particularly appealing and often a conversation point. Cool place:)

Mouldy cake! Sadly the beauty of this place is merely skin deep.

Walked pass this beautiful cafe on a lovely morning and it was full of people so I decided to give it a try, I picked a small chocolate mudcake from the cabinet and ordered a coffee milkshake (using actual coffee shots according to the lady who took my order), Love the interior decor of this place and it was filled with stylish Ponsonby people. My coffee arrived 15 mins later, unfortunately I was given an ice coffee rather than a milkshake and when I pointed this out to the waiter, the lady who took my order gave me a funny look and it was obvious that they were reluctant to swap it for what I originally wanted, without wanting to wait another 15mins I took the ice coffee and left. As I got back to the office, I started munching on the chocolate cake but thought it tasted slightly off...........i turned the cake over and to my horror the bottom of the cake was completely covered in mould....... it wasn't just one small bit, it was completely and utterly green. I drove all the way back to show this to the waiter and left, without asking for a refund or anything as I have already given up completely on this place.

Delicious. I've been to Ponsonby Central a few times and this was my second meal here. There were four of us and a real combo from vegetarian to big hungry bloke and there was something for us all. Friendly helpful staff, I'm told the banana shake was the best ever. I took a choc-salted caramel tart away for later and my friends enjoyed the made on demand donuts, I spied lots of cream, custard and jam in theirs. My very favourite part of brunch was no doubt the gorgeous Rocky cruising around

I went in expecting the same as the fro-yo places I've visited in the past: self-serve yoghurt in a bunch of flavours and similar sugary toppings. The place itself is clean and spacious with some pretty funky décor (all white, wooden benches and wall, and a huge world map printed on the wall). There was a good selection of flavours, with some I hadn't seen elsewhere, like taro. The toppings station was also well stocked and pretty much the typical ones you find at the others - fruit, sprinkles, lollies, cereal, some sauces, popping pearls, mini cookies, and brownie and cheesecake bites. The taro, green tea and peach flavours I got (yes, I went all out) were not bad, but they were a little watered down and artificial tasting. For me, the consistency wasn't that great either, which was icier and less creamy than other froyo establishments. My friend opted for the caramel flavour, which neither of us particularly like, but the toppings (especially the cheesecake pieces) made up for that. Overall, Yogurberry is pretty attractive for its interior design and comfortable seating area, but frozen yoghurt wise, there are probably better choices. Also, there were no sample cups in sight, so it's really a case of take your pick and hope for the best!

I'd probably prefer to invest my hard-earned dollars in a boring ice cream from a dairy or even (horror) a soft-serve ice cream from McD's. That said, the fun of self-serve fro-yo is just that - it's a moment in which we have leave to regress right back to those all-you-can-eat days at Pizza Hut. You remember, you got all the "pizza, pasta, salad and desserts" you could eat, and the biggest attraction for the kids was of course, the soft serve and the miriad sprinkles. (Is it wrong that I remember that so vividly?). Of course this is a supposedly healthier option (it says low fat remember, not low sugar!), and I have to say I did enjoy my treat. I'll just remember to pull up on the handle a lot earlier next time.

While the orange and green uniforms donned by the staff are more than a little unfortunate the yoghurt itself is pretty good. The prices here are based on weight so while the initial price of $2.99 for a 100gram pottle sounds reasonable, don't do what I did and have a blonde moment while operating the heavy machinery (this is a DIY operation) and overfill it to the point of gluttony. What I initially just wanted as a little hot day mid-afternoon snack could easily have been consumed as a main meal and paying $11.00 for frozen yoghurt really wasn't cool but I have no but myself to blame. My choice of flavour was a mix of plain old vanilla and white choc/macadamia which was nice and fresh and best of all ice-cold. There are a choice of toppings also, so you can go from a more healthy option of fruit such as watermelon or pineapple or really go for gold with shaved chocolate, sweets and chocolate sauce. Whatever floats your boat!

It's the most ideal yoghurt place name imaginable. I like it for the following reasons: 1. I was so disappointed with Yoghurt Story! It's got everything it needs to be good: a great idea (with it being do it yourself), a great selection of toppings, and a funky, instantly recognisable brand identity. Yet, there's something missing. It just feels a bit average. The actual flavours of the fro-yo are insipid and it's really expensive for what you get (mine was $9 for a small pot with purposefully lightweight toppings as you pay for the weight). I prefer this Yoghurt Story to the one round the corner on Queen Street as it's much quieter; you can quite happily sit and eat your dessert and chill out rather have to deal with people walking in and out of Canterbury Arcade and the general hustle and bustle of the main street but it's still not a place I'd frequent again in a hurry, Auckland has much better food-stops on offer.
