I've driven by Fox's probably a trillion times. I never stopped, even when it was a working drugstore. Yesterday, I decided to visit Fox's for an ice cream soda. You see, I run, and running makes me want ice cream. So this time instead of stopping at Sonics.... I went in, and was surprised at the weird empty shelves on one end. The other part is a long old time 50's looking ice cream soda bar. There was '50's music playing. There are some booths. The menu is not large, but there's only one woman serving. I ordered a hot dog which was 3.50 and a strawberry ice cream soda. I was hoping for strawberry topping in the soda, but she used strawberry flavoring. I was hoping for whipped cream, but it wasn't offered. The soda was good. The hotdog was common. It isn't like Clintons Soda Fountain in Independence which is really good and uses toppings and fruit. Fox's was fun for an outing. But I'd rather go to Clintons Soda Fountain. The service, though, was spot on and enjoyable. read more

I was in Raytown and hungry. My first search was for tacos (duh!) And I was on my way to a taco joint when I passed Fix's and noticed the signs for a fountain. The nostalgic bug bit me and I had to relive the childhood sundry experience. The fountain is located too the left when you enter the pharmacy. It has a counter the length of the building and some tables. The vibe was definitely the old school fountain, neon, oldies in the radio, fizzes, ice cream, etc. There menu is very limited for food. Hot dogs, tuna salad, egg salad, grilled cheese, and chili. They have a grill but when they reopened the health department said they needed a new hood limiting the options. I had a inbetweenie weenie, Frito pie with a hot dog, and a chocolate shake. The hot dog was ok. Nothing fabulous, not bad. A little bland and no heat in the chili. The chocolate shake was good, but not wow. Service was very friendly although some comments made me uncomfortable and responding with a nod and smile seemed best. My bill was $11.11. not ridiculous, but sure seemed high for what I had. I don't think I'll eat there again. Maybe go with a group to enjoy the fountain experience. They close at 4. Later hours could really help the I've cream side of the business. read more

She explained the Phosphate thing to me (I'd never heard of it) and suggested the malt - I got chocolate and it was by far the best I've ever had. The Pharmacy has now permanently closed. Owner Gary Fox has transferred his prescription inventory and customer base prescriptions to HyVee Pharmacy and retired as a Pharmacist. However, the recently remodeled Soda Fountain area has recently reopened and is ready for business and will remain open. Some of the stainless steel soda fountain equipment is circa 1950's and looks as if has been just installed. Hearing of this, we couldn't wait to drive the 26 miles from Kearney in 34 degree temperature to get and old fashioned Hot Fudge Sundae served in a vintage Sundae Glass. Are we nuts or what? Turns out we are not. As I told Nancy who is Gary Fox's Soda Fountain operator-in-charge, I haven't had a Hot Fudge Sunday like the one today in 30-years and the Soda Fountain area looks marvelous. Nostalgia at it's finest. Wether you're old enough to remember when they had soda fountains in the back of drug stores or just young enough to hear the stories of yesteryear, Fox's is truly a place you'd enjoy, especially if you have an affinity for the past. Walk in and it's your regular mom and pop drug store. Veer to the left and there you'll find a soda counter that's been around since sometime in the mid-19th century. You can either sit on one of the swivel seats at the counter and opt for one of the tables. On the menu is your basic diner fare. Eggs, pancakes, burgers. Nothing exciting. Everything's average except for the prices, which are also a relic of years past. A tenner will allow you to walk out quite full and then some. Everett, the guy that runs this part of the shop, is also a shout out to the past. An older guy, he takes his time to prepare anything. Don't go if in a super rush because it isn't going to happen. He takes his time preparing whatever you want. But it's worth it. You know why? The malts. 100 stars for the malts! Not that I have malts often at all but I opted to try it here. Am I glad I did! Best effin malt ever! His slowness pays off here. The malts are hand made. He puts real malt balls in and mixes by hand, then puts it under a mixing machine for a few seconds. OMGSOGOOOOOD. Mine was chocolatey and creamy and malty in the way only the most proper of malts can be. You'll also get not just a glass full; he makes extra because he feels the whole tin should be filled in order for it to be proper. At $3.50 a pop, this one can easily make a meal for two or a dessert drink for 3 or 4 people. This is quantity + quality at its best. read more

Excellent fountain chocolate sodas just like they used to make and delicious sandwiches! My sisters and I enjoy ourselves so much with the relaxing atmosphere and you can't find better service in this day and age. A real treat. read more

I love to support small business. I love to support local business. However, how this store has survived 75 years is beyond me. I've attempted to do Rx business with them several times and have always run into an issue and not been able to. I've never been too upset about it because the staff wasn't particularly friendly. However, now that our insurance has switched and I was price shopping a medication for my son, I wanted to give them the opportunity to have the business. On this particular day, I called no less than 15 pharmacies. Each person I spoke with was friendly and helpful, UNTIL I CALLED FOX'S. To be clear I was price shopping the generic form of Adderall XR, an ADHD medication for my son. Prices ranged from $183 - $500+ for the month. I called Fox's and asked if the could price a medication for me. The woman acted slightly annoyed, but said she could call me back with the information. I stated that would be fine so she asked what drug I was looking for. As soon as I told her she interrupted me and hatefully asked for my name. I told her and she proceeded to hatefully inform me that she would "NOT DISCUSS NARCOTICS WITH YOU OVER THE PHONE." I said I didn't need to discuss it, I just wanted to get a price on it. She continued on to berate me and make me feel like a criminal, before closing with 'we don't even stock that.' I didn't ask questions, although I'm confused how a Drug Store and Pharmacy wouldn't stock or order narcotics if presented with a legitimate prescription. After hanging up the phone I was in utter disbelief that she had been so hateful and degrading over a simple question. I have thick skin, I have been presented with numerous opinions from others on the subject of medication for ADHD, and I have let nearly all of it roll off my shoulders. However, to feel like a professional in the pharmaceutical field disrespect and judge me, definitely got to me. Under no circumstance would I support giving them my business - not for Rx's, over the counter medicines, food, or milkshakes. read more
