I was a small business owner in Loudoun County for nine years and understand the commitment, dedication, passion, it takes running your own business and can attest to that which exists at Middleburg Academy! In my opinion there is no such thing as"perfect", however I do believe in "excellence" being the best or striving to be the best you can with your mission leading the way. I have found that to be true in both the headmaster Mr. Bell and Mrs. Bell whom also have a student attending classes there. They truly are vested in the school! They have been constantly working to get all prior faculty, administrators, families,etc. on board. It isn't easy to come into any organization with new, different ideas, methods to an existing community. There's generally a combination of resisters, cooperators, and skeptics. It is quite normal to have turnover as a result of "change" depending on how people's willingness to conform or not. You can please some people but rarely all people. In my opinion The Bell's have done an excellent job in incorporating the new while maintaining many traditions that existed before they arrived. Their hearts and efforts are in the "right" place! A place that will continue to evolve, creating openings, possibilities with the focus being on providing our children, their students the best opportunities in life. Much is continuing to develop, as in my opinion should! There isn't just one way to get anywhere, there are many and I'm with them! Unfortunately when some people do not get a response they want, an answer they want to hear, a way they want, they can become resistant, to what is possible... shut down and want to blame someone...the quickest way in modern times is twitter or review sites, yet rarely do people take the time to express their appreciation and the good things. Well things are good here, really good and I appreciate their concern and passion for my kids, all kids that want to be and do their best! Results not excuses! My challenge, if you are looking for an independent school that cares about your child their future, their education, has the guts to challenge them to strive to be their best, will encourage and challenge them to set out to be the difference in the world, a leader amongst leaders with respect, morals and dignity, and you don't mind small class sizes, then please take a look at this school! Additionally if your child likes to play multiple sports and find it difficult, this is another opportunity they can explore at MA. We also hold state championship titles in both Girls Varsity Volleyball 2015 and 2016 with our Coach being Washington Post Coach of the Year, and a basketball state championship in 2015! They have a great piece of land which allows for ample parking on both sides of the school. The inside of the school was renovated pretty recently, so classrooms, common areas, gymnasiums, etc. are in great shape and have top of the line technology. It also happens to share some land with Langston Middle School which is convenient for the county. The teachers and staff are wonderful. I've had a chance to work with them frequently through my volunteer role with the Relay For Life of Reston. A really unique thing about this school is that they have a huge JROTC program. It allows for the students to get involved with activities outside of the classroom, get mentored, learn leadership/organization skills, become more motivated and have more discipline, and really prepare them for the real world/college. I can't talk highly enough about the JROTC program and the influence it has in these kids lives, especially when they may not be receiving a lot of support at home. I have gotten to know Sargaent Handy and Major Schuler over the years; they are such wonderful role models and I'm so grateful for their service. Shout out to Linda and Susan in the activities office, they're a huge help to us too!

I transferred here for one semester and I still feel confused about how this place runs…read more First day the bell rang and nobody moved because half the teachers said the clocks were wrong. The principal later announced over the intercom that "time is a suggestion during spirit week." It was October. The cafeteria line takes about 25 minutes even when five people stand in front of you. They run out of forks almost every day so students eat pasta with spoons or broken plastic knives. One time they gave everyone cereal because the pizza oven "needed a mental health day." The fire alarm goes off at least once a week. Not drills. Someone microwaves popcorn too long and the entire building evacuates. Teachers bring grade books outside and keep teaching on the sidewalk while buses try to park around us. Our math class moved rooms four times in two weeks because of a ceiling leak. Instead of fixing it they put a traffic cone under the drip and called it "hazard awareness training." We took a quiz while water hit the floor next to my desk. Hall passes are giant laminated boards the size of a laptop. You have to carry it to the bathroom. Everyone stares at you walking down the hall like you stole school property. Gym class got cancelled because the gym was rented for a staff pickleball tournament during school hours. We wrote essays about teamwork while teachers cheered through the wall. The announcements last ten minutes every morning. Most of it is lost and found items. There are more lost hoodies than students in the building.

Sure there were things to complain about but as an adult I have my dream job and still keep in contact with the same group of friends I had back in the day. The small annoyances? Hakuna matata. In the past few years, several national news reports have painted the school to breeding ground for obnoxious, entitled children who had nothing better to do than sell heroin and bully students. These reports don't surprise me but if you look beyond the surface you will see a culturally and financially diverse mix of students with real passion and smarts. A few special shout outs to: Senor Thomas aka Principal Thomas - He was my Spanish teacher in HS and now he's the mother effing principal! He's an ultra friendly dude who has the capacity to relate to a variety of students at every level. Westfield is very lucky to have him. Mr. Margrave - My AP English teacher whose one man production of Kaftka's Metamorphosis is still engraved to my head to this day. Ms. Bucco - She taught me how to write papers with a clear intro, middle and ending. All of the security guards who would park my car for me every morning because I was such a horrible driver Ms. Davies whose enthusiasm for random American president facts has helped me understand inside jokes on Family Guy and the Simpsons for quite some time now Any former member of the Canine Camera Crew...Wake Up Westfield What up! I graduated from The Field School in 1978 and it changed my life. I had been diagnosed with…read moreDyslexia (later ADD) in the 4th grade and after trying several schools I just excelled at The Field School way beyond the others. I was there only 10, 11 and 12 grades but I accomplished more in those 3 years than in any other schools. My parents told me that when I met Elizabeth Ely (the founder) that we went into her office to talk. I came out of the office and told my parents that "Miss Ely and I have discussed it and I will be coming here". I don't remember the conversation but I know it was her making sure the Field School was the right fit for she cared about every student. The teachers were outstanding. I later learned the Elizabeth knew she could pay the teacher what she wanted so she sought out the smartest people with the greatest passion to teach that she could find. They would often be only their for a few years and she knew it. Like my science teacher that came to work there for a few years while he worked to get into Med school. Many stayed much longer of course. She got them at their prime with a passion to inspire young people and was a master at doing so. Nothing describes how great Field School was for me than to share some of my accomplishments. When I found out that they did not have a yearbook and I had loved being on the yearbook staff in other schools I talked to Elizabeth about it. She challenged me about it and asked what "I" was going to do about it and I went to work getting a team together along with a teacher sponsor to help us. Two of the sharpest girls in my class agreed to help. I still have pictures of the yearbook and layout I will try to post them. Years later I stopped by to visit the school just after the school had closed for the day. There was a student waiting for their ride home and I introduced myself, asking what was new at the school. They told me that the yearbook had just won some type of big award. I asked to know more and he told me the story of how one of the students had started it years ago and you can see some of the collages masters framed on the wall in the school today. That was me and the yearbook team they were talking about! I even remembered working on the collages with the team year ago. I always had an interest in Science but my science teacher inspired me to new levels at The Field School and help me get a NSA scholarship to Ball State University in Holography, electronics, and other areas of physics for high school students. I returned from that event and spent the rest of the summer writing a 110 page book on how to make Holograms. Other students before me had created a Holographic table and made some holograms at the school as a project. I again went to Elizabeth with the book and the idea of her letting me teach a class to my peers on making Holograms. She saw the book and challenged me to write up the course outline. One the teachers help me put it together and I taught the class in Holography at the school. I also got to excel in photography with the school darkroom and a gifted photographer named Olga that used a leica M2 camera. I remember her challenging me to see new things in the photography class. A hobbie I still enjoy today. I was not as good at sports so Elizabeth let me take weight training and I started the 1st weight training class with a local veteran that loved teaching kids. This is not just my unique story but a example of thousands of student that were inspired at The Field School. I love going home to DC and hearing people talking about the great Field School. I am now 55, still deal with my Dyslexia and ADD and have written three books that you can find on Amazon. I also have clearly made real difference in my community. Thanks to The Field School and the dear late Elizabeth Ely, that I know is still watch over all of us. Thanks for lighting the fire to my life.
