Ms. Amanda, the principal, knows everyone that walks through the door, both the kids and the family. Our son has some food allergies and Ms Amanda, Ms Paula and all the teachers have been excellent at working with us and keeping our son safe. The staff truly gets to know the kids and takes care of them well. They are careful with big transitions and try to ensure the children feel as supported as possible. The staff plans and executes lots of fun and engaging activities, like a Touch a Truck, a reptile show, splash days in the summer, soccer and music opportunities and celebrates all cultures exposing the kids and to a world of celebrations. While my husband was filling out docs, I walked my daughter through the school hallway to keep her busy and when I looked into the 16M+ classroom (the classroom she would be joining), I witnessed the teacher yank a little boy by his arm. She pulled him from above the elbow and his legs were not touching the ground. Not only that we heard her yell at a child in the classroom to "SIT DOWN" very aggressively before this. It was loud enough that we heard it from the sitting room in the front. The directors assistant went into the classroom to check what was going on. Needless to say, we did not enroll our daughter into this school and left shortly after. I let the director know what I had seen and we left. I later got a phone call from the director explaining what I had seen was redirection from the teacher and that she had been at "this school for 4 years" and said words like "appeared" and "perceived". There is no excuse for a teacher to yell at babies in this way. There is no excuse for someone to pull a child in the way that she did. She could have caused an injury and dislocated his shoulder. I did not get another phone call and I don't know if this incident was reported but | feel like it is my responsibility to let anyone looking into this school know what I saw. I still think about that poor child and what his parents might not know. Please do not enroll your children into this school especially if your babies cannot speak to you and let you know what kind of treatment they are getting. What I saw has affected me and we are lucky enough to be able to keep our girl at home with us and delay day care.

What made this even more distressing was that this child had reportedly shown concerning, aggressive behavior for months. My daughter (like other children in the class) became afraid to go to school because of this child and started to pretend to be sick on schooldays. Multiple parents raised concerns and filed formal complaints, hoping the school would put proper support systems, supervision, and communication in place. Unfortunately, nothing meaningful ever happened. I want to be clear: I don't blame the child. Children who act out physically are almost always struggling in some way and need gentle, consistent support from the adults responsible for their care. My heart truly goes out to this little one. Children show us they need help in the only ways they know how--and it's the school's job to respond appropriately. The problem here was the school's complete lack of action. They did not communicate effectively with parents, including (shockingly) the parents of the child involved in the ongoing behavior. That lack of communication appears to have allowed a difficult situation to escalate unnecessarily, ultimately hurting multiple families. After my daughter was bitten, we made the immediate decision to withdraw her. What stunned me most was what happened next: nothing. No exit interview. No request for feedback. No inquiry about why we were leaving. No apology. Not even a word from her teacher. We simply unenrolled her the next day, and the school never acknowledged it at all. This was an incredibly disappointing and disheartening ending to what we hoped would be a nurturing environment. I sincerely hope the school takes a long, hard look at its communication practices and its responsibility to support all children--both the ones being hurt and the ones doing the hurting. Kids deserve better, and so do parents.

I communicated with Ms. Kaltun, the director and I must say, after speaking to her once, I was "sold" at putting my son at her school. She is very personable, very kind and understanding, genuine and just listened to my questions, concerns and answered them confidently which gave me peace of mind sending my son over to a school during the pandemic. We then went to the school for a tour and met Ms. Komala, our son's primary teacher. At first meeting, our son felt very comfortable with her and he never forgot her name even tho it took us about 4 months before starting in class- she sure gave him a good impression and really showed us how much she cared for the children. I have so much good things to say about the school. I have recommended them to my friends and coworkers who also had good experience with them. Overall, this is a place that cares about our children, they do not look at them as numbers like all the others. If you want quality education and a safe place for your children, this is it.

I agree with the first reviewer about the school being closed too often, especially in the winter…read more Fairfax County Public Schools close frequently although on days that there are no reasons to be closed (the snow was already over and the roads were perfectly fine), and the Boyd School follows the Public Schools decisions. Public Schools are free so parents have to put up with it, but we pay a hefty tuition for a private school, we expect better. In addition to that, they close on many other occasions such as two weeks on Christmas, one week for Spring Break, teacher's service day, and more. My daughter is currently going there and I'm considering other options because of this. In terms of staff and curriculum, it's just okay. The teacher - student ratio there is quite high for the 3-6 year-old class (10 to 1). Considering how high the tuition is, the ratio should be lower. Overall the school is quite inflexible. If you want to cancel the contract, you have to notify them 3 MONTHS IN ADVANCE, which is an awefully long time to wait if you are not happy with the arrangements there.
