If it weren't for the unexpected changes in our family's circumstances, we would have gladly allowed Elgar to continue his educational journey at Oak Hill. My wife and I are Christians and believe in the Redemptive power of following Christ's teachings,…read moreand the infinite nature of His love for All. We considered sending one of our children to Providence Christian Academy, but ended up walking out during a Pharisee-Like interview with its Headmaster, Mr. Shin. Mr. Shin actually did us a huge favor, as he revealed both his outer and his inner self to us that day. Interestingly, Mr. Shin only considers Baptists to be Christians, and the School should actually be called Providence Baptist Academy. We toured the school and found its physical infrastructure simple and adequate. We arrived in the afternoon, and it was a bit troubling to see around 30 children in an unsupervised setting in the cafeteria. I would have expected to see classes or instruction, but instead saw children entertaining themselves in a large municipal space. After the tour, we were told that Mr. Shin likes to meet all prospective parents. Mr. Shin began the interview by asking us the nature of our faith and belief. He then recounted his odd conversion story, telling us that he had previously been an atheist. Eventually he decided to become a believer. Subsequently during the time his wife was putting him through seminary (away from home), she developed a gambling problem. He asked her to stop gambling, but when she didn't, he leveraged her credit card debt to divorce her and gain 'sole custody' of their children. He paid back this debt, and became involved in a ministry, but that didn't work out well, so he decided to open a school instead. Missing from his story was any mention of Jesus Christ, Christ's love for us, and how we can improve ourselves by following Christ's teachings. During our interview, Mr. Shin asked where we attended church, announcing to us that because we were not Baptists we are not 'true Christians' and would not be going to Heaven. At this point we walked out of the interview, since it had become obvious that this was not a school where we would want to send our children. Our understanding of Christ's message is that it is intended for all Mankind. We did not experience that compassion from Mr. Shin. We would not want our children exposed to Mr. Shin's narrow interpretation of Christ's love. Instead of hearing Paul's message, we were confronted with the message of Saul. It is unfortunate that someone who 'self labels' themselves as a Christian has such a limited understanding of the nature of Christ's teachings. We are so fortunate that our children will not be subjected to this narrow and limited interpretation of Christ's message. It is unfortunate that Google does not allow us to give zero stars in a review.

I love Edlin, here are the reasons why: 1. Student to teacher ratio is 12:1 2. They teach a language plus latin 3. The teachers are warm, caring and professional 4. Uniforms!!!! 5. The students are taught that they are lucky to be in the position to attend a private school and should help those who are not lucky-this runs counter to Nysmith, I found when I went on the school tour that the director felt the students were "special and elite" and she actually felt the need to tell me that "these are the children of lawyers and doctors" (Dear Nysmith, I am neither a Doctor or a lawyer-are your kids really smart or can they just afford your high tuition?) 6. The students are taught respect for themselves and other people. When the director comes in the room, the kids stand up and address her. In addition, diversity is CELEBRATED, there is no pretence that we are all the same like in Public School. The kids celebrate holidays like Dewali and (thank God!) dress up for Halloween if they choose to. They learn about other cultures which I think is extremely important in our increasingly global society. 7. The lessons arent dumbed down, kids are expected to do well and given the tools to succeed. 8. If a concern of yours, the student body is pretty diverse, though not as diverse as the Reston public schools, but I think this is one of the most racially diverse private schools in Fairfax county. 9. Children are challenged! I found in the AAP program that my daughter was handed a math book but not really taught what to do. She was always told to do her best but not really expected to learn anything, which brings me to number 10... 10. NO TOTAL CONCENTRATION ALL YEAR ROUND ON THE SOLs!!!!!!!!!!! I have always been very pleased with Edlin. This year my daughter is returning after her hiatus.

While my husband was filling out docs, I walked my daughter through the school hallway to keep her busy and when I looked into the 16M+ classroom (the classroom she would be joining), I witnessed the teacher yank a little boy by his arm. She pulled him from above the elbow and his legs were not touching the ground. Not only that we heard her yell at a child in the classroom to "SIT DOWN" very aggressively before this. It was loud enough that we heard it from the sitting room in the front. The directors assistant went into the classroom to check what was going on. Needless to say, we did not enroll our daughter into this school and left shortly after. I let the director know what I had seen and we left. I later got a phone call from the director explaining what I had seen was redirection from the teacher and that she had been at "this school for 4 years" and said words like "appeared" and "perceived". There is no excuse for a teacher to yell at babies in this way. There is no excuse for someone to pull a child in the way that she did. She could have caused an injury and dislocated his shoulder. I did not get another phone call and I don't know if this incident was reported but | feel like it is my responsibility to let anyone looking into this school know what I saw. I still think about that poor child and what his parents might not know. Please do not enroll your children into this school especially if your babies cannot speak to you and let you know what kind of treatment they are getting. What I saw has affected me and we are lucky enough to be able to keep our girl at home with us and delay day care.

I communicated with Ms. Kaltun, the director and I must say, after speaking to her once, I was "sold" at putting my son at her school. She is very personable, very kind and understanding, genuine and just listened to my questions, concerns and answered them confidently which gave me peace of mind sending my son over to a school during the pandemic. We then went to the school for a tour and met Ms. Komala, our son's primary teacher. At first meeting, our son felt very comfortable with her and he never forgot her name even tho it took us about 4 months before starting in class- she sure gave him a good impression and really showed us how much she cared for the children. I have so much good things to say about the school. I have recommended them to my friends and coworkers who also had good experience with them. Overall, this is a place that cares about our children, they do not look at them as numbers like all the others. If you want quality education and a safe place for your children, this is it.

Avoid the headache and do not consider this school…read more The first week my son went to this school, he had a little meltdown. He wanted to play with the toys and didn't want to transition to the next room without crying. The school complained about him that day in regards to that incident. They seemed to have no empathy towards my son and did not extend any courtesy on allowing him to get comfortable with the teachers, environment or learn their routine. The following week, I was completely caught off guard by receiving an email that states they came to a conclusion that they can't handle his outbursts and feel that he needs extra support that they can't give and that they PRAYED about it with the other staff and felt like God gave them HIS blessing that they should give up on this sweet 4 year old boy. I mean, of course, God doesn't want a child to learn more about Him and the Bible, that makes total sense! I was stunned by this remark and am disgusted how they would weaponize prayer to enhance their personal, inconceivable agenda. They also used an excuse that they are a small school which is nonsense because now my son is at a small school and the teacher there is more than accommodating on giving him time to get to know him, understand his personality and allow him to get familiar with their learning techniques. Almost all schools that I talked to while trying to find a new school agreed with me on that and thought it was absolutely ridiculous for him to be kicked out and judged so quickly. Way of faith has NO FAITH in a child to adapt at their own pace and doesn't seem interested in wanting to bring out the best in your child. If your child doesn't fit their mold they will kick you out and you will be scrambling to figure out what to do next. I'm glad my son is too young to understand this situation because this would have hurt him to know he was not accepted and given up on. I never would have expected a Christian school to do this.

What stands out to me is that the teachers are here because they care and not because they need the money. The teachers are older which means they have more experience and are not going to leave the second they find a job that pays better (an experience we had at another local preschool). The school is "old school" so unlikely another local preschool we were at that played Paw Patrol and PJ Masks episodes every day, there is almost no screen time (just on rainy days when they can't go to the playground). Finally, the class size is small (about 5 kids). Not only does this mean more one on one attention, but in this era where everyone is worried about getting sick, I value my kids being able to attend school and me getting my work done. (In comparison, the other preschool my kids attended had 20-24 kids per class and I did not have a single week that at least one of my kids was home sick for at least a day.)
