After trying and buying their Freezeland red at the wine festival last year, I felt like I needed to get to this winery and taste all of their wines in a setting that would let me concentrate on just enjoying the goodness of the wines. The tasting room is very understated but very pretty. I really liked it. There were ample places to sit and enjoy a glass and some munchies. The tasting was an enjoyable experience, with the person doing the pouring being very eager to share great info with us. We opted to get a glass of the Freezleand red and Freezeland white. The wine tasting was below average in customer service and the acoustics in the tasting room were horrible. Based on the wine tasting experience, I would rate 2 star. However, the place was very clean including the restroom and there were nice employees greeting us at the door. The lady that did the wine tasting was annoying and slightly rude. We are in our early 30s so maybe they thought we were younger with no money. Fox Meadow is, by far, my favorite area winery. The property and tasting room are gorgeous. The owners and staff are friendly and welcoming. The wines are very good and not ridiculously overpriced. The Le Renard Rouge is my favorite--one of my favorite things to do is sneak away to Fox Meadow on a weekday and enjoy a bottle on the deck with my husband. When we have brought our two-year-old along, the staff has always been welcoming of him as well. Fox Meadow's wine club also gets two thumbs up, especially for the two free tastings every visit. They frequently have well-thought-out special events, like fudge/wine pairings or black glass tastings, and there's always music on the weekends. I've been to a lot of Virginia wineries and I have to say I was extremely disappointed with Fox Meadow. While the wine is good and views are drop dead gorgeous - the service was absolutely terrible. Friends and I arrived after a long drive on skyline drive looking forward to doing a tasting as none of us had been before. I waited patiently for the counter to clear to step up to do a tasting. After about 15 minutes - I walked up with my group of 3 and was only told then that I needed to be on the waiting list to do a tasting and could I please get to the back of the check out line to be added to the waiting list. ?!?!?!? There was no indication that there was a list at all and people were waiting in line to pay for bottles and glasses? After we were added to the list we waited about another 15-20 minutes at which point we step up to the part of the bar they told me we'd go to. I was then told we had to wait for Kate's party...and the woman left to go find Kate? Once we got started everything went fairly smoothly until we had to pay for the tastings and order wine. There was no efficiency to this process - people going back and forth to the check out then to a check out on the other side of the room all together. Mind you - this was a Saturday at about 4:45-5PM with absolutely gorgeous weather...not sure why they wouldn't have staffed appropriately to avoid long wait lines Finally when we got wine we went outside to enjoy the view. One of us in our party went to speak to the manager about our dissatisfaction and were met with excuses of their door person didn't come in today. Also FYI they do not have publicly accessible wifi - and there's really no service up there either. Normally I'd say they'd be doing themselves a disservice because who wouldn't want free publicity of people posting on social media but i can't imagine that anyone would have really anything great to say about the service. Fox Meadow is, without a doubt, our favorite winery in Virginia (and we've tried a huge number of them). We initially found them several years back at the Vintage Virginia festival and have been going to visit the winery as "Friends of the Foxes" (their member program) for just about as long as we have know that they existed. Their wines are truly outstanding, we have given these as gifts to friends with much more refined pallets then ours and the wines always get rave reviews. The winery itself is in a pristine setting, you are at about 3,000 feet in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and you have such an amazing view from their deck that we often times plan our visits around meal times and sit outside and enjoy the surroundings. The owners who always seem to be at the vineyard are really nice and care about their wine and its production - talk to Dan or Cheryl (the owners) and you'll get quite the history lesson in how their vineyard works and it's evident how passionate they are about their wines. This is one of our favorite places to bring out of town guests for a tasting - they have premium tastings with food pairings as well as the standard tasting program. They sell a nice selection of cheeses, salami's and other goodies to enjoy with a glass of wine on the premises and have great deals for that case you're going to want to bring home. read more

All I can say is that, next to Rappahannock, Fox Meadow is my favorite winery in VA. The wines are always delicious (I love their Riesling) and they offer a food/wine pairing for a few bucks more that really caps off the experience. This is a frequent stop when friends and family come into town as the wines are always consistent and the staff is always very friendly and knowledgeable. The last time we visited in May, Carol delighted my out-of-town friends with her expertise and witty banter. My friends are still talking about how much they loved the experience to this day. The tasting room is open and airy with a beautiful view of the mountain.There is picnic seating on the deck. Although I am not a member (and should be), their wine club offers wine specials, events and an exclusive gathering room. Fox Meadow is a must stop for any VA wine tour. read more

4.5 stars. This is almost a flawless winery, and I only lack the .5 because out of every place, this is the next great winery/vineyard in VA. First off, for anyone, this is a unique tasting experience. You have the option of a food pairing with every wine, and its well chosen... right down to the famous rice crispy treat. On to the wines. This is a place that makes it simple for me. They are all good. And that annoys me.. you almost don't want to enjoy the wine because its all just too easy. The pinot grigio is good... the pinot gris is better. I love that they separated the two, great idea, and it shows the depth of this place. Good/great chardonnay, and that's not easy to admit.. oaky/buttery, but not too much... good for those that love a stainless produced one. Other good whites, but let's move on to the reds. I have a cellar full after only a short trip. They are all good. Predominately, I like the Renard Rouge. Their specialty red... and they do it great. Other reds include VA standards, such as the Cab Franc, etc, and let me say, they are all rivals of VA's best. There is no fight between Linden and FM.. not because Linden will always be the be all end all in VA wine, even if I do believe so... but, FM is doing everything right, and as I get spend more time there, they get better and better. The place is beautiful and the folks are nice. I look forward to return visits and continued FANTASTIC progress made by a a currently great and future landmark VA winery. read more

I think this is 3.5 stars to me, primarily because the wines didn't really win me over on their own. The wines are decent, just not fully to my taste overall; others around me were fans though. Fox Meadow is a smallish vineyard (at this location, at least) located amid beautiful hilltop scenery. The tasting and production rooms are small but cozy, and the staff is warm and friendly. The building has a wonderful deck overlooking distant hills, with several picnic tables (also a few in the grass below) for enjoying the wine and small bits you can order inside. All that said, what this vineyard does amazingly well is the food pairings. I mentioned that their wines weren't really to my taste, but the flavors in these same wines lit up when paired with specific foods they brought out during the tasting. If I reviewed the pairing skills alone, this would easily be five stars! read more

I have been to Fox Meadows a couple of times and loved it. They have an awesome food and wine pairing that I highly recommend and their wines are pretty good too. My big caveat is for group tours. If you are taking a group (8 or more), do not call for reservations until you are absolutely sure you are going there. They take a non-refundable $50 deposit. This information is not on their website (I just double checked), nor was it disclosed to me at the time I booked (I canceled three weeks before the scheduled tasting date, not at the last minute because my friends decided they wanted to go to Charlottesville region instead). While the $50 is non-refundable, the winery does allow you to "use" the money at their winery within the next year. It's understandable that the winery requires a non-refundable deposit for groups, however, this should be disclosed in writing and on the website. Otherwise, I would really recommend this winery. It's fun and the staff (and the owners) are really friendly. It's one of my favorite wineries in the area. read more

The view is fantastic. On a clear day you can see all the way to the monistary hangging off the side of a mountain. The tasteings are always fun, paired well and decently priced. Pros: Their wines are mostly good. They offer tiny tastes of foods to pair with wines during the tasting. On a visit during the winter they offered mulled wine, I'm not a fan, but it smelled amazing. My mom went with me once, she is not a wine drinker and our tasting host was so kind to her. She tried to find something she would enjoy. The view is probably the best I've seen at a winery in VA. The porch is great. Cons: The wines are not very sophisticated or refined, but they are enjoyable. Summary: If you are very knowledgeable about wine, you may not find these wines to be complex/mature. If you just want to have a pleasant time, drink some wine, and enjoy the view this is a great place to choose. read more

As a smaller winery, Fox Meadows felt laid back and had excellent service. The wine tasting is very affordable. We tasted 6 wines (3 whites, 3 reds) for $7.50/person. We brought a picnic and hung out on the deck for a couple hours. The view is incredible. And they had a singer/songwriter on the deck who was very good. Came here for a wine tasting last weekend and had a great time. The tasting room is classy yet friendly and relaxed, the staff was passionate about their wines and engaged with us during the tasting. The wines were flavorful and unique, and all the pairings were excellent! After the tasting we selected a bottle of wine to enjoy on the patio (which is dog-friendly, although my furry one stayed home), which provides gorgeous views and a delightfully cooling breeze even on a warm morning. Don't waste your time or money on this place. I was supposed to have my surprise birthday party/going away party at this place today. My friends who were arranging the surprise for me (and happened to be members at Fox Meadow) did call ahead and let the staff know we would be coming. They asked the person on the phone what about if there were more than 8 people in our group. The person on the phone said that wouldn't be a problem. We arrived at the winery today and were "greeted" at the door by one of the owners, who very rudely demanded to know who organized our party. She said, "Did you not think you had to call ahead about this?" We explained our situation, but were told something completely different from what the person on the phone told us. The owner wanted to charge us $200 per hour to rent a room after hours. She said they could not accommodate us. There were literally 4 people sitting at one of the tables outside and that was it. We had 16 people in our group. They cited a policy that was on their website. Again, we had gotten a different story than when we had called in. Not our fault. Train your employees better. They tried to put us out in the middle of a field at one little picnic table - mind you, they wanted to charge us just for that. When our group found out how rudely we were talked to, they decided not to bother buying any wine there. After talking about it, we decided to move the party elsewhere. One of our friends very graciously opened her home to us. Seriously? They care more about their policies than making money? It must be nice to have that luxury. We would have bought more wine than the $200 they were wanting to charge us per hour. They embarrassed themselves today. Some in our group are local business owners who will never be back. Others came from close to DC. They will never be back. A couple of our friends had a membership until today. They won't be back. They tried their best to ruin my party. I certainly won't be back. You know what? All 16 of us are friends with lots of other people who will also now not visit your winery because of how we were treated. Was it worth it? Maybe some classes in how business works would be in order? You don't treat people like that. If I was the business owner, I would have come up with another solution - anything to keep the paying customers there and buying my wine. To add insult to injury, they didn't give a flying flip that we were all walking out without buying anything or that they had gotten their membership card given back to them. Very poor customer service. We still had a good time after leaving the winery thanks to my friends. I hope their vines shrivel up and die so that they'll have to close their doors. Their wine is mediocre anyway. Save yourself the trouble and visit Phillip Carter Winery in Hume or Chateau O'Brien in Markham instead. Great wines and they won't hassle you about having more than a certain number in your group (I know this from personal experience at Phillip Carter). read more

My girlfriend and I showed up ready to spend the afternoon there and when we went in they would not allow us to bring any food in. I explained to the girl we will be spending the afternoon drinking a few bottles of their wine. She then went to the owner and the owner came out and said I would have to sign up for a membership and buy two bottles a month for six months just to bring in food and sit on their back balcony. I tried to explain that we just wanted to relax with some wine and food on their balcony and it was out of the question unless we signed up for their program. We left and I don't recommend anyone going here because of the rudeness and terrible business model they have. read more

We had booked a reservation for my friends birthday here. We were coming from out of town to Mountains to stay. They called me two days before to let me know they didn't want our group. They said it was too big and if we were going to come then it had to be first thing in the morning. I asked what happens if we come anyways and she said they would only allow us one at a time. Awful customer service and really rude. Not what I would expect from people in Virginia or a business. It was right next to our cabin too and it did not look as nice as the one we ended up going too, which was Aspen Dale Winery.
