Parry Peak Campground - Sorry i look terrible

Just past the (fake) police car, through the town of Twin Lakes, and to the left, lies the sweetest…read morelittle campground to date. PARRY PEAK! My family and I have been camping up here many times and again most recently. I love this campground because: ++ The host (and family) is beyond friendly, super accommodating, generous, always has a smile on his face and is quite the talker. He and his wife come up each summer to run the joint, and as a result, they have made many friends, and have a great energy about them. ++ Bathrooms! Yes, I will admit I am more of a "glamper" - meaning I'm okay to not pee in the woods. With restrooms located throughout the two-loop campground, I can do my business in peace. The facilities are well equipped with toiletries, air fresheners and isn't too bad for a toilet that doesn't flush! ++ Loop one features LARGE campsites perfect for tents and trailers, are close to the roaring water, and provide so much shade! Loop two, is closer to the camp host, main road to town and provides less shade, but is just as nice! Sites are well maintained, clean and provide plenty of room to spread out. ++ Fires are allowed! With fire bans throughout the state, it's nice to have the ability to have a contained fire in the pit. We roasted marshmallows, cooked steaks and spent ample time talking, singing and staring at the stars. It's not truly camping, without a fire! ++ Firewood delivery! The hosts granddaughter (who is all of 10 years old), makes a point to deliver firewood to anyone that requests and pays for the three-pack minimum - all for $20, plus a few buck tip for the delivery! ;) ++ Views for dayyyyyssssss! Overlooking the twin lakes that the town was named after, and just at the base of Mt Elbert - it's hard to go wrong with a view that great! ++ Just a short 2 1/2 hour drive from Denver, 20 minutes from downtown Leadville, and 2 minutes from Twin Lakes! --No reservations are allowed - meaning this place fills up FAST as it is a first come, first serve basis. Previously when camping here, we were able to come up Friday morning to grab a killer spot. With its popularity increasing, now one must come up earlier in the week (like Wednesday!) to get a spot. We were lucky to snag the LAST spot in loop two. --For $22/night, I found this to be a bit steep for an overnight price. --Less privacy in loop two! Our little site was a bit small for the four of us, and the only decently flat and shaded place for our tent was awfully close to our neighbors. Despite the few downsides, I know we'll continue to summer camp at Parry Peak!

Checked it out and was ready to roll with a cabin, but the very last cabin was listed as a caboose. Chance to live a Gen X childhood dream? Yes, please! This is up there with the high end treehouse hotels that are way beyond my budget. Yes, there's road noise from U.S. 50 and an occasional train toot from across the highway, but the historic novelty of getting to stay in a supremely renovated caboose is so very, VERY worth $120-ish per night. It's well-designed (rich, warm hues - yellow, orange and red - offset by decorative teal and royal blue accents) and appointed, complete with (starting from the caboose of the caboose ): a two-headed rainfall shower, early-mid 1900s elevated toilet basin with the tug chain (like the train driver's whistle cord), stained glass window, saloon doors to get in/out of the bathroom area, water pump styled faucet/sink, a mini-ice box fridge that reminds me of the one at my grandparents' house when I was a kid, matching microwave, mid-size TV, pressed-copper ceiling (real metal; definitely not plastic), raw-edged tree cross-section headboard, queen bed, a hammock (my favorite), an upper-bunk that kiddos will surely fight over, opposite side lower bunk, elevated front- and backward seats (where the brake guy used to sit) and an authentic train door as your entrance. What's basically a back yard (broadside, behind the caboose) has a fire pit and Adirondack-ish chairs, so super-cozy on a cool night (firewood's about $7, which I'm pretty sure is normal at any box store). In short, a totally unique experience that meets or beats the more predictable hotel experience and prices. They are intentionally designed to be consistent, while the caboose was designed to be totally different, but in a really cool way that combines rustic with comfort and modernity. I'm just in town to work, so I can't really speak to the other areas of the campground except this one.

Worker hit the main line, shut off water with no warning so couldn't fill fresh tank. Then sold me fire wood that was pressure treated landscape timber. But here's a change again. The girl just came by as I was typing this and refunded 2 days of no water and the firewood. I am understanding that this is a new owner and he's spending money to improve everything. Let's give him a chance.

The facilities were so clean and well maintained. Since we had these spots all day, we had a hike in the morning for people attending the wedding as well as the actual wedding in the evening. Most of our guests explored the facilities and hiked most of the morning. I know many of them will return soon because it was great. The amphitheater had electrical connection on the center circle. We didn't need it because the acoustics of the amphitheater were amazing. We had a harpist and the music carried beautifully. Their voices were clearly heard throughout the amphitheater. Our rainy day plan was the pavillion, which is lovely and amazingly well planned. This is a gorgeous place for a wedding. I can't believe I didn't mention the staff. They were so communicative and helpful. They were such a joy.

We moved to the Springs from Denver a few months ago and we love how quiet this park is compared to other trails near Denver. This park is also very clean! As someone who doesn't like using public restrooms I thought these bathrooms were so clean. We enjoy that the park has plenty of parking, one of the parking lots even has a playground, and a pump for your bike tires. There's also picnic tables which we really enjoy using after our hike. We haven't camped here or mountain biked but that is an option too. Some hikes are easy enough for you to bring your kids, and others offer more of an incline. In the summer you see birds, butterflies, and lizards. This place is great, we really enjoy it!

Yet, getting into & out of the truck was treacherous due to the drop offs on the sides. The tall, unmowed grass was deceiving & falling down hill was a real concern. They locked hot tub, the guest had to request them to unlock it -- feels creepy. Admittedly, I had to change my reservation due to grandbaby's early arrival & I made a mistake. However, I caught it, called them, rather than adding the extra days to current reservation--they made a new one. When I arrived, I pointed this out. Yet, I had to check out & recheck back in. I didn't have to move camping sites -- so that was a plus. We've stayed at many KOAs this one seems to have no pride of ownership.
