Good camp ground! The tent section is very well separated and spacious. Although there was a huge spider on the pergola. Everything is close together but I would say that it would be better if they added some bathrooms close to the camp area. The bathrooms also are not in the best condition and they kinda smell musty.

Our site well off busy highway.

Convenient location for a overnight stay. Pleasant check in staff, trees at most sites. Some sites are more challenging to use, we had a pull through ( site 45). Strong wifi. Walmart just around the corner. Pool looks nice, since Covid you have to make reservations for pool use.

We love dogs at the La Junta KOA!

Great place to stay! Friendly, clean & comfortable - price is very reasonable. Will stay here again when in La Junta.

This is the second time we have stayed at this KOA in La Junta, we were able to rent the "Y" Cabin a second time several years later and they have improved on the property and it was clean, neat, and supplied well. We had a restful night with quiet and safety, along with clean nearby restrooms, and the privacy of our little cabin while still having access to the large pool, laundry, camp store, coffee shop, and full hookup camping sites. They allowed late check in, already had the porch light on as well as the air. They called us to confirm, was kind, and offered directions as most GPS devices/apps do NOT take you to the camp location. Posting various cabin photos, their was only 2 of us, cabin sleeps 6 easy and if younger kids maybe 8? This KOA is located one quarter mile East of La Junta Walmart on US HWY 50, behind the office for Velero Cellular. Not far from mid town, so you can shop or eat in town without much driving. We recommend Village Inn which you could walk to, excellent food see my Yelp review.

This KOA should have it's KOA status revoked. Not only was both doors to the cabin/mobile cabin not working even with a key but the outside stairs where rotting and the outside looked like something off a horror movie. It smelled of musty and the wind blew through it. The host and owner is abrasive and hostile and unwilling to work with his guests for subpar cabins or unforeseen circumstances. Holding fast to his policy of no refunds. The camp ground is run down with rotten and broken picnic tables piled up next to the the playground, a train that is under going repairs is the best way to describe it, a rec room that looks like a junk drawer for the whole campground and putt golf course that is non existent, and the playground is lack luster at best. And any time someone tries to ask for any kind of compensation they are given a hostile response and the brush that of "oh yeah another bad review." This is not the response to guest or to customer complaints ever. This owner even went so far is as to says by merely placing or request he had to turn way long time customers. So why rent the room at all? Why blame the guest for your loss of business? Please read this review before you use this KOA.

Noo reason to stay here, this KOA is kaput: No cable hookup, busted pool, a dump of a play area, mosquitoes amok, unkempt lawns & sun-bleached merchandise in the shop. Might as well stay in the Walmart parking lot where they have someone come through to sweep every once in a while. Pathetic place :(

This is the first thing we stepped in. I got bites of some kind, maybe fleas.

I give this KOA 5 stars for best overgrown weeds, used lumber and used fly strips lying around. It was just trashed. The staff was rude when we asked if they wouldn't mind not mowing under our bedroom window. It was good they were mowing the weeds down, I just thought as many empty spots that were around they could have started somewhere else. Even this KOA hasn't quit recovered from covid yet. Just be careful, be sure to watch out when you are walking your pet for fleas and ticks.

Nice, clean KOA. Very nice people. Love all the trains. Can't wait to stop back and stay in one if the train cars. Conveniently located.

    Purgatoire Campground - Site 4

    Purgatoire Campground

    (1 review)

This weekend we decided to venture in to the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the…read moreSan Isabel National Forest to enjoy the wildflowers and try our hand at fishing. The headwaters of the rainbow trout-stocked Purgatoire River run through Purgatoire Campground and we were lucky enough to pitch our tents just a few paces from it this weekend; the crashing and tumbling water providing a surprisingly perfect "white noise" each night for slumber. The area surrounding the river is absolutely stunning with wildflowers and dense aspen and conifer growth everywhere. And, as is usually the case, it isn't until after we experience a place such as this that I become curious about its history. This weekend was no exception. Just 30 minutes of research this morning revealed an intriguing irony: the attraction and abundant life that characterizes the Purgatoire River is shrouded in historical mystery, hardship, and death: "It was once thought that Spanish explorers, namely a party led by Francisco Leyva de Bonilla in 1593, were the first to visit the Purgatoire River in the sixteenth century. An attack by Native Americans killed all but one of the Bonilla party at some point after it left New Mexico and reached the Great Plains. The attack was initially thought to have occurred on the Purgatoire; the river was so named because of the unblessed Catholic souls that were allegedly sent to el purgatorio--purgatory--along its banks. The name stuck (its current version is French), but the river may be named for the souls of men who never reached it--the location of the Bonilla expedition's demise remains uncertain." (Ref: https://coloradoencyclopedia.org/article/las-animas-county) At any rate, it is well worth the 2-1/2 hour drive from Colorado Springs to visit this alluring area and imagine what it was like before paved roads, iPhones, and grocery stores. To get there: Purgatoire Campground GPS coordinates are: (Latitude, Longitude): 37.2525, -105.10917 37°15'9"N, 105°6'33"W From La Veta, Colorado, take State Route 12 south for 25.3 miles to Purgatoire campground sign. Turn right onto gravel Route 34. Go 0.2 miles to "T" intersection. Turn right and drive 4 miles on rough gravel road to campground. The campground is very clean and monitored by camp hosts, Helga and Larry. I recommend Site 4, in particular, because it sits on the river and is sandwiched in between just one other campsite to the right and open space and the 5-mile North Fork Trail trailhead to the left.

My family and I have been camping up here many times and again most recently. I love this campground because: ++ The host (and family) is beyond friendly, super accommodating, generous, always has a smile on his face and is quite the talker. He and his wife come up each summer to run the joint, and as a result, they have made many friends, and have a great energy about them. ++ Bathrooms! Yes, I will admit I am more of a "glamper" - meaning I'm okay to not pee in the woods. With restrooms located throughout the two-loop campground, I can do my business in peace. The facilities are well equipped with toiletries, air fresheners and isn't too bad for a toilet that doesn't flush! ++ Loop one features LARGE campsites perfect for tents and trailers, are close to the roaring water, and provide so much shade! Loop two, is closer to the camp host, main road to town and provides less shade, but is just as nice! Sites are well maintained, clean and provide plenty of room to spread out. ++ Fires are allowed! With fire bans throughout the state, it's nice to have the ability to have a contained fire in the pit. We roasted marshmallows, cooked steaks and spent ample time talking, singing and staring at the stars. It's not truly camping, without a fire! ++ Firewood delivery! The hosts granddaughter (who is all of 10 years old), makes a point to deliver firewood to anyone that requests and pays for the three-pack minimum - all for $20, plus a few buck tip for the delivery! ;) ++ Views for dayyyyyssssss! Overlooking the twin lakes that the town was named after, and just at the base of Mt Elbert - it's hard to go wrong with a view that great! ++ Just a short 2 1/2 hour drive from Denver, 20 minutes from downtown Leadville, and 2 minutes from Twin Lakes! --No reservations are allowed - meaning this place fills up FAST as it is a first come, first serve basis. Previously when camping here, we were able to come up Friday morning to grab a killer spot. With its popularity increasing, now one must come up earlier in the week (like Wednesday!) to get a spot. We were lucky to snag the LAST spot in loop two. --For $22/night, I found this to be a bit steep for an overnight price. --Less privacy in loop two! Our little site was a bit small for the four of us, and the only decently flat and shaded place for our tent was awfully close to our neighbors. Despite the few downsides, I know we'll continue to summer camp at Parry Peak!

We actually had reservations further along at a national park but decided to shorten our driving distances for the day. We were able to make our reservation online. This is a very nice campground, with sites nicely spaced out and some nice amenities. We were in the Carpios Ridge campground which has 63 sites for RVs, trailers, and tents on a ridge 150' above the lake. We're actually pleased that our mapping app took us on an indirect route to the campground as our site did not have a water-view and we might have missed the lake otherwise! My understanding is that this is an Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground that is managed by the state of Colorado. In April, 2024, the seven sites with full hookups were $41, with only 50 amp electricity: $36, and basic: $28. You also need to purchase a state of Colorado daily vehicle pass for $10. (This is expensive as we've stayed at other COE campgrounds for 1/2 off as holders of the NPS interagency senior pass, and without the need for a vehicle pass. $46 with state of Colorado management vs $18 were it COE management -- plus we had already paid for a site at Zapata Falls Campground that we wouldn't be using. The campground has clean restrooms and free showers (for campers only), as well as laundry facilities (in theory) and a book exchange. There are shared water spigots, as well as walking trails in the vicinity. There is also a shared dump station. The Visitors Center was already closed when we arrived and wasn't open yet when we left the following morning but we were able to buy our vehicle pass at a kiosk. We saw rangers patrolling the area. Only two concerns are worth noting. First, as already mentioned, the discrepancy between pricing of state and COE campgrounds. Also, the washing machine ate my $2 without the machine starting. More than the irritation of losing the $2, we really needed to do laundry after having been on the road for few week.
