New and next to the skate park
    Sheena S.

This park has something for EVERYONE! Tennis, walking trail, soccer fields, playgrounds, lots of green area, pavilions, etc etc. Popular and well maintained. Well marked with clean signage. Want to play tennis, enter and drive and drive and keep driving, lol. That'll really put into perspective how HUGE this park is! Twelve courts. But don't let that number fool you, they are very busy and fill fast! There's a skate park, basketball courts, a rec center. At this rate, if you're still reading, I don't know why, GET OVER HERE! You can also check their website, they offer many lessons at this park.

Great softball facility that's the County should be very proud of. Complex design is how all parks should be built and fields are in awesome shape.

    The recreation center.

This place is one of the best parks I have been to in Georgia. Tons of trails and outdoor options. Great sized dog park and skate park to. There seems to be a lot of teams who practice here and it has been pretty busy every time I come. A great choice for the entire family or just for some alone time in nature.

This park is huge. I mainly came here for the dog park. They have a big and little dogs section: the big dog section is really spacious and has a water source with a bowl. There are trees around for shades and benches to sit on. There are parches of grass here and there, typical of most dog parks. I think your dog will have a ball here, no toys but you can bring your own. There is a trail right by the dog park that is paved, you can walk your dog afterward.

How cool is this skate park?

AND IT'S FOWLER PARK BY A LANDSLIDE!!!! If city parks were race horses, Fowler park would easily take the triple crown because it is in a league of its own! This park is huge. It is located on Carolene Way which is off of Atlanta Road in Cumming. It is open from 7am until 11pm. It is anchored by a very nice recreation center that has two gyms, a cardio weight-room, a walking area, a multi-purpose classroom, a fitness studio, a dance studio and a community room, so there are a variety of classes and activities that are offered. It has four ball fields, seven additional fields, 12 tennis courts, a track, basketball courts, walking trails, picnic pavilions, a dog park and to my delight a skate park. Now, I am not actually planning on using the skate park but I thought that it was a smart addition to this park because kids need a legitimate place to ride their skate boards. Skate parks tend to be very rare so this was a nice discovery. This park also offers easy access to the Big Creek Greenway which is perfect for walkers, joggers and bikers. The facilities in this park are laid out in a very thoughtful way. The large pavilion is situated so that it is very close to one of the play grounds and has enough space to allow for organized activities which is perfect for large family gatherings. There is seating throughout and nice restroom facilities. The fields and grounds are beautifully maintained and the basketball courts look very new. They are offering camps this summer and this is a perfect site because it allows the kids to participate in a variety of activities both inside and out. This is a lovely park for anyone looking to just get out and get some fresh air. You have the opportunity to do something as simple as walk or something more physically challenging such as tennis or basketball. Whatever you want to do, you will enjoy doing it at Fowler Park!

Parking is easy to find, with enough space for at least 75 cars, including spots near what looks like a boat ramp. It costs $8 for the whole day, which isn't bad if you plan to stay a while. Fishing seems to be the main attraction here. There were plenty of folks (kids and adults alike) either in boats or lined up along the shore, casting their fishing lines off the bank. The trails are mostly easy to moderate, but there are a few steep, narrow spots where you'll need to watch your footing. I walked about 3.5 miles with a hiking group, following a loop that winds through the trees and offers a mix of open views and shaded paths. There are some benches along the way if you need a break. Bathrooms are available, which is always a plus, and there's a lot of green space. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend spreading out a blanket for a picnic as the ground is littered with dog poop, despite the big "no dogs" sign at the entrance. It's about an hour's drive from Atlanta, with the last few miles on Buford Dam Highway being steep and winding. The park wasn't overly crowded when I went, but there were a good number of people fishing or tubing. If you're looking for a peaceful walk by the water and don't mind stepping around a few messes, it's worth checking out.

There is a spa, a beach, a waterpark, a luxury resort and good times @ Margaritaville. You can rent jet skis, go horseback riding, charter a fishing boat, rent a house boat, go camping or take a hot air balloon ride nearby. It was created by the completion of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River in 1956, and named for Confederate Army poet Sidney Lanier. Its primary purpose was for flood control and water supplies and has a water volume of about 1,049,400 acre-ft. The narrative will tell you its construction destroyed more than 50,000 acres of farmland and displaced more than 250 families, 15 businesses, and relocated 20 cemeteries along with their corpses in the process. But I want to pause here and dive a little deeper under the surface of its waters and introduce you to: [ OSCARVILLE, GEORGIA ] "The truth is rarely pure and never simple." ― Oscar Wilde Lake Lanier is partially located in Forsyth county. It is a county that prided itself on not having black residence so much that Oprah came to film an episode of her Emmy Award-winning talk show here in 1987 (trigger warning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WErjPmFulQ0 The show makes mention that "no black person had lived in the county for 75 years", which was a direct reference to a predominantly African-American community known as Oscarville. It was home to 1,100 black people prior to a racial conflict in 1912 which was so brutally violent that it caused blacks to flee the county... even those who were landowners. "According to Elliot Jaspin, a historian and journalist quoted by the Digital Library of Georgia and the New Georgia Encyclopedia, only about 24 of the nearly 40 Black landowners in Forsyth County at the time were able to sell their land. The other properties have no record of sale, and some believe the abandoned land was simply taken by White residents." - The Times Oscarville began as a small farming town around 1870, but after so many fled the county in 1912, it was practically a ghost town. Those still claiming ownership of their land either had it seized or were "asked" to to forfeit their land to build the Buford Dam by Newport Dam Development according to an article published on April 6, 2021 by The Signal. Prior to the violence, Oscarville was actually known for its agricultural prowess in fighting off the boll weevil infestation that hindered many farm crops and enriching the soil with chicken feces. A technique that has been duplicated to this day to revive poor farming/gardening soil. "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." ― Aldous Huxley [ MUST WATCH ] Link to Oscarville | The Town Submerged by Lake Lanier (Intrigued Mind): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifMKfBO_R6s [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] Lake Lanier is a beautiful lake and a rich resource for Atlanta. It provides approx. 70% of the drinking water for Metro Atlanta as well as power, recreation and businesses. But there is more than what meets the eye as you look across its glistening surface. An entire town is buried by its waters and has been nearly forgotten, and the hard truth is this is not an isolated story. There are several other towns across the country who suffered the same fate. They include: Kowaliga (Benson), Alabama Seneca Village In New York City Susannah, Alabama and Vanport, Oregon The story of Lake Lanier and Oscarville will be featured in an upcoming TV series called Oscarville - Below the Surface. When I called back I got someone else who said I should probably have her do an assessment. So I showed up this past weekend and had her do the 2 minute assessment which was basically the instructor asking her to swim to her then float on her back. So I decided to set her up for lessons, although I was not impressed with the swim instructor. The lady at the desk told me there was an $80 registration fee and then $25 for the assessment. First of all no one told me there was a fee for the assessments and she went into exactly the class I figured she would go into so I was a bit irritated. Anyway I decided to set it up regardless. I did ask on the phone how many children were present for each class and I was told for the five. There are eight children present today with one instructor. So that's another annoyance. This location is very convenient, so I would love it to work out. I guess I'll give it more of a try but so far I'm not impressed. Another side note, in order to see the lanes fully you have to sit inside the pool area and it is like 100° in here! I'm sweating bullets. But it's only way I could get a full view of what my daughter is doing. The teacher is very perfunctory and doesn't crack a smile. I'll have to see if I can get her private lessons perhaps with someone else here or try somewhere else altogether.

Their website proudly professes a $50,000 renovation to each of their 14 houseboats but I can tell you that no matter how much money you spend, if you don't keep it cleaned up it will always look worth a lot less. The walls were covered in a very dark brown paneling that made the boat feel small and cramped. The two upstairs beds (no bedrooms, as the bed went from wall to wall) were on a raised platform with the bed pad sitting on top and the two bedrooms downstairs the bed pad was on the floor. Their were 2 bathrooms, only 1 shower - but it was big enough for two (dirty looking though, icky things on the floor and on the top) and the bathroom floor, you know, around the toilet bottom were guys tend to hit when they miss the actual commode, yellow, brown, slimy, icky icky icky!!! Everywhere I looked the place was scuffed up, dirty, and had so many spiderwebs that I thought they had just decorated early for Halloween! I don't believe these boats actually go through an actual stripped down cleaning!!! When paying $600 a day, you would expect to have the houseboat in the same if not better condition than if you were staying in a hotel room. Right?!!!! There were 6 people in our party and none of us will ever rent again from Lake Lanier Harbor Marina. On Saturday night, the generator went out, we had no lights, no a/c, nothing. We managed to get back to the Harbor expecting to find the "on-call" tech waiting for us as we had put the emergency call in 30 minutes prior to our arrival, but no luck. We must have made 6 phone calls and finally he arrived. I found out that the "on-call" guy lives over an hour away. Wow, great management decision on that one guys! So after a 3 1/2 hour wait, we finally got up and running again, just in time to go to bed as by then we were exhausted, cranky, tired, and hot! The hot tub had crud and dirt swirling around in the bottom of the seats and floor, we didn't want to risk catching anything so we opted not to use it.
