Many of the locals told me I had to go to Four Way Grill as it was a staple in Memphis and where many of the Civil Rights leaders came to eat and have their meetings there. When I walked in there was a guy like myself who was not from Memphis. We both were talking about what we should get. The greeter said the chitterlings were good. I was like nah, I definitely don't want that and I told him I actually had never had them before. He was shocked and said where are you from, I told him Maryland. He said, "oh figures" we joked for a while and he told me he was going to sit me in the V.I.P. section. When we sat down I ended up ordering Fried fish, chicken, corn, mashed potatoes w/ gravy, yams, mac and cheese, peach cobbler and Half and half. Little history about The Four Way Soul Food Restaurant. It has been in Memphis for over 75 years and was often the restaurant of choice for activists, leaders, and black musicians! Making them not only a prime example of how good the food is here but a testament to the rich history that lives all over this city! When I visited recently I was greeted by smiling faces and great customer service. I got the catfish with two sides and when I tell y'all that the fish was good I mean it! That catfish was the Beyoncé of the meal and made me wish I lived closer so that I could stop by weekly! After a long stroll through the Stax Museum, my wife and I stopped here for lunch. Service was excellent and friendly. My wife went for the Country Fried Steak (which was HUGE) and I the Fried Chicken. Both were excellent (though my wife thought the gravy was canned). The tea was refreshing and the Lemon Meringue Pie a show stopper. The fried green tomatoes were excellent as well (and the ranch was real buttermilk ranch). As I was eating my food, I noticed a long black hair in the dressing. I called Four Way to speak with a manager and the young lady told me to hold. I stayed on hold for 19 minutes before arriving to the restaurant. When I walked through the door, the young lady at the front counter and male sales associate greeted me and asked how they could help, however, I insisted on speaking with the manager. While standing at the front counter, the young man attempted to retrieve the manager. He pointed in my direction to let her know that I was the customer that had called. She looked at me and continued with her conversation. When she finally finished, she walked over to the young lady at the front counter and asked her what the problem was, and the young lady expressed to her that I'd been waiting to speak with her. The manager then turns to me with a dull look and says nothing!!! At that point, I was frustrated. She didn't acknowledge me by greeting, she just stared at me blankly. I began to explain to the manager that there was a black, very long, visible hair in my food. I too let her know that I was disappointed as I have eaten there several times in the past. She told me that she didn't know how the hair could've gotten in my food because the staff wear knitted caps. No apology, only discrediting that there was in fact hair in my food. Appallingly, she (the manager) calls the staff from the KITCHEN to tell them to come to the FRONT of the restaurant to prove to me that they have on the knitted caps. I then walked away before the staff could get to the front. I get in my car and the manager still pursued me by FOLLOWING me outside to my car with her kitchen crew to prove that they wore the knitted caps (only two of several had the caps on). The hair in the food, the manager's unempathetic response, and the harassing behavior were all HIGHLY UNACCEPTABLE AND INAPPROPRIATE!! I will never return. read more

So, I come to this restaurant/crown jewel every time I come to Memphis. I've now eaten here 7 times and unfortunately never written a review. This time I didn't come alone or with just a few friends, but with members of my motorcycle club all the way from IL. They are still raving about this gem. The food as always was amazing, however as Covid is getting under control we were able to meet the owners and get a history lesson. It was amazing. I absolutely LOVE the Four Way Restaurant! The food is always delicious and freshly made. The staff is always smiling, warm, welcoming and helpful. I've had 2 dishes here so far the fried catfish (my favorite dish here) and fried chicken (fried to perfection and seasoned just right). They both come with 2 sides and a moist delicious cornbread muffin. The turnip greens are delicious but I've had better. I'm not a fan of the mac and cheese because it's not baked. The potato salad is average. Aside from the fried catfish, my absolute favorite thing to get here are the fried green tomatoes. OMG! Best I've ever had. Ahh, Four Way... The last time I was at Four Way was over 15 years ago when it was "Four Way Grill", a small one-room restaurant. So, I was looking forward to returning to check out the expanded seating and to enjoy the food. Twelve of us dined together at Four Way and the two waiters were clearly overwhelmed and exasperated by the Sunday, after church crowd. The service was so disorganized. After placing our drink orders with one waiter, our beverages were nowhere to be seen over 20 minutes later. Finally, the other waiter arrived to take our food orders and to retake our drink orders and after what seemed like forever, our plates came to the table. Between the twelve of us, we ordered fried chicken, turkey and dressing, liver, neck bones, fried catfish and a variety of sides. My plate had fried chicken with greens and mac and cheese. The fried chicken was good and the greens were decent but it's a shame for a soul food restaurant in Memphis to use what appeared to be (and tasted like) Kraft mac and cheese. Other sides such as the cabbage and yams were delicious but the mashed potatoes tasted like they were instant potatoes. The neck bone, liver and fried catfish were excellent. This was a somewhat disappointing return to Four Way but clearly the restaurant is a Memphis staple and the steep history of the place keeps some people returning. read more

I came today due to this being support " Black Business Support Week ". Today I had fried catfish, turnip greens, spaghetti, cornbread muffin and sweet tea. The fried catfish was hot, fresh and just delicious. Everything was served fresh, hot and timely. The food and the customer service is always exceptional. I just had my lunch another way. I hope the other two ways are better. My thoughts are not much better than before, and I think my four previous stars were too generous. I should have paid no more than $12 for either of my two meals. The food isn't bad, but I grew up southern and so did my mom and her mom. This just ain't how they would cook it. Service was great. I appreciated being brought a second glass of tea before I'd finished my first. Tea was really good too. I asked if the country fried steak was frozen and he said that just take it out of the freezer and drop it in the fryer. How we doin? The cornbread muffin wasn't burned this time, but it was still like eating a spoonful of cornmeal. It really bothers me when southern food restaurants don't cook a proper cornbread. That should be the staple of every meal. Mac&Cheese wasn't bad this time, but somehow it did not impress. Boiled okra was pretty good, but needed seasoning. Fried green tomatoes weren't too bad, but they were just wrong. They were sliced so thin by a tomato slicer. Then they were deep fried. Who uses the deep fryer for tomatoes? They just looked too perfect like they were manufactured. Cut them with a knife. Imperfections are good. It's southern food. Most importantly, cook them in an iron skillet. It's a distinct flavor that's essential to fried green tomatoes. The baked chicken was supposed to be a leg and a thigh. The menu said leg and thigh. The receipt said leg and thigh. I'm pretty sure I just ate two legs. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Not much effort at all to season or flavor it. That's about it. Not a bad place by any means, but I won't go out of my way to come back. And I still think the price is too high. read more

My in-laws swear by this place. Almost every Sunday, they visit this South Memphis staple for "Sunday Dinner." This past Sunday, they insisted we (my husband and I) join them for dinner...and by dinner I mean 1:30ish. We obliged since they offered to treat. We arrived with the other 50 people in search of "some of the best soul food around" and added our party of five to the waitlist. The wait was reasonable, about 10 minutes, and we shuffled through the tables and chairs, each close enough to remind you of family dinner at grandma's house. Our waitress greeted us almost immediately and took our drink orders. My husband and I ordered a VIP (sweet tea & lemonade mix) and the in-laws sweet tea. Well...when you combine super sweet tea with super sweet [seemingly] KoolAid Lemondae, you get a hella sweet, syrup-like cup of the sugar diabetes...yes, sugar diabetes. We desperately needed water to dilute the sweet. Apparently, The Four Way is filled to the brim with hungry church-goers each and every Sunday afternoon. Despite them being trained to serve the masses, service was extremely slow. And, the food was nothing to phone home about. Secret: they use Jiffy to make corn muffins...blasphemy! I had three wings, which tasted pretty decent, but I didn't enjoy the pinto beans not yams. SN: I LOVE pintos and was really excited because I knew my Grannie's heavenly beans would be placed in front of me. Sadly, the beans were salted before they were completely done cooking (all good cooks know this is a no-go as it makes the skin on the beans tough) and the yams tasted canned and lacked the love you expect from a good yam/candied yam. Needless to say, I'm certain we (read "I") won't be back unless someone else is footing the bill. My expectations for the food was not at all met and I left wanting more...and feeling a bit disappointed. I also had an insane sugar rush! First timer. I have never heard of this place before, but I am glad that I came. The server was great. He was welcoming and didn't mind having a conversation. The pricing for the food is very reasonable. I ordered the fish, cabbage, and slaw. The fish was well seasoned. The slaw was absolutely perfect. I often stop here on my way home from church St. Augustine Catholic Church. I'm familiar with the owner Mrs. Bates and the history of the 4Way grill as I've eaten there in the past. The staff here is friendly and often no matter how busy they are they still smile and joke with you. My lunch today consisted of fried chicken, candied yams and turnip greens. It was delicious.
