Yesterday I went to pick up a rental car from the Waterford Michigan location and was disrespected because I am a transgender. I was told that my appearance, address, and driver's license didn't match my profile, yet I have maintained my appearance, identity, identification, and address for the past several years and rented from Enterprise on numerous occasions with no issues. I was asked to provide unusual proofs of identity and residency that had never been requested in the past and that nobody would likely be carrying with them when they rent a car (such as Utility Bills). I explained that I had never been treated this way or asked for such unusual pieces of identification at Enterprise or any other establishment and had rented numerous times over the past several years at that location and the Auburn Hills location. I expressed that nobody caries utility bills with them, and even offering my drivers license, social security, and items with my name and address, such as vehicle registration, car insurance, medical insurance, AAA card, and bank account apps, all with my name and address, I was continually told none of that would be sufficient without utility bills, and was turned down without being provided a vehicle. I then reserved a vehicle at the Auburn Hills Michigan location, and was treated with even greater disrespect when I went there, with the Enterprise representative very coincidentally using the exact same statements. I am quite certain, based on being treated the same way at both locations, that the representative at the Waterford location called the Auburn Hills location and they CONSPIRED TO CONTINUE THEIR DISCRIMINATION. For almost 3 years, I have been doing home care for my 84 year old mother who suffers from bone cancer, and just as the previous times I rented a vehicle over the past few years, it w because I need a vehicle so that I can tend to her needs and get her to doctor appointments when our vehicle is in for repairs and service. THE TREATMENT I RECEIVED AS A TRANSGENDER FROM ENTERPRISE WAS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE TO ENDURE; IT WAS UNEXCUSEABLE, UNPROFESSIONAL AND DISRESPECTFUL.

Ok whatever, I must have a car because mine is a lease and I can't put these road trip miles on mine. So we take the car, and it is awful!! Smells terrible like a mix of cigarettes and cleaner, the left blinker doesn't work, and the brakes squeak every time they're used. Now I just dont even feel safe taking this car on a 450 mile trip. (By the way, I asked someone who I know that used to work at Hertz who tells me that this Sentra is a mid-size car, NOT full size. So now we've been lied to in addition to not getting what was reserved.) The guy tells us to call in the morning before we leave and he should have some better returns that he can swap for us. At this point it's 6pm and all other local rental companies are closed for the day. So we do what he says. Next morning, NOPE, no new cars. So now we are completely screwed, mad, and late. Instead of leaving at 9am as planned, we have him void the rental and we rushed over to Enterprise. Do yourselves a favor and go to Enterprise. It's literally 5 minutes from this Hertz and a 100% better experience. We were helped quickly, got a brand new Charger, and paid $100 less. I will never go through Hertz again.

Then they argue through the wall over who has to help me. Finally, she agrees to help me. I ask if it will be much longer and she shrugged and walked out of the room for several minutes. When she returned, she was yelling through the wall again talking about my car because they didn't have a fullsize, which I reserved. I finally got so fed up that I walked out.

If you're renting a car in this area I strongly recommend you use the Avis Rent-A-Car on Rochester road, owned by two Somali brothers. They're courteous, friendly and always treat me great. From what I found online, it was cheaper to rent farther away from the airport. If you're staying in the Birmingham or Royal Oak area, this Budget lot is very easy to reach. The lot is small and they don't have a heck of a lot of cars. But this probably helped me to get upgraded. The rental process is pain-free if you prepay online. The fellow behind the counter was friendly. It took all of 5 minutes, and I was cruising the hell away from Birmingham in a nice car, with the weird radio presets from the last renter. The car itself drove well, but there was an alert for an oil change - so I don't know if they keep exactly up to date with all of the maintenance. Like every other rental place, there is a huge fee if you don't return the car with a full tank of gas - something like $9 per gallon. However, there is a Mobile station literally right across the street, so there's no excuse to not return it full. Returning the car was as easy as picking it up. They take a quick look at the fuel gauge, and then you're off. They keep very limited hours on the weekend, however, and if you return your car late, they will charge you for a whole additional day. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to rent from this Budget again.
