Or, you could check out Revel Surf! I checked out this artificial oasis on a Thursday afternoon. Located in Mesa at Cannon Beach, there's plenty of free parking. Once you park, walk in and pretend you're not in Arizona. You'll have a lot at your disposal for some fun and relaxation. When it comes to entertainment, you can surf or take surfing lessons. They have both a training pool and a wave pool. I took a lesson and it was awesome. Unlike learning how to surf in the ocean, here you have the benefit of consistent waves. You're going to wipe out again and again, surfing isn't easy, but I made some great progress during my hour session. And had a blast while I was at it too. Outside of surfing, there's a lot more you can do. You can sunbathe with your toes in the sand. You can jump off the diving platform (at four different levels) for another thrill seeking activity. They also have sand volleyball and skateboarding. While you're doing it, you can enjoy tropical beverages and some good food. I tried a good number of their cocktails, and a beer too. Pretty much what you expect when you're at the beach. The food exceeded my expectations. I had a fish taco, grilled, which had a nicely grilled tortilla in between crisp coleslaw and a delicious sauce. And then their Revel fries...think of loaded fries with grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, cheese, and sauce. It's an appetizer but it very well could be a full entree given the portion size. Service was overall quite good. The first bartender I interacted with was friendly and did a good job taking care of me. My surf instructor did a great job too. Chill vibes which is exactly what I hoped for at a place like this. They also had some live music for part of my time there which was a nice touch. Tickets aren't cheap, but if you come on a week day or in the evening, you'll get a discount. Also, if you purchase a surf package, admission is included. If you're not interested in surfing, you can purchase a general admission pass. And you can stop by the bar and restaurant for free. Up to you. Though I'd go for the full experience. It's not going to feel 100% like a true beach, but given the convenience, it's a pretty awesome alternative. Pro tip: all day happy hour (food and drink specials) on Thursdays.

They have a good-sized wave pool, although full disclosure, I haven't actually used it. I've spent my time walking around the property, taking in the scenery, and enjoying a couple of cocktails at the bar. They have a nice sandy beach area right in front of the wave pool with plenty of tables and chairs, and the bar is conveniently located close to the pool. There's also a smaller pool area if you're looking for a quieter place to relax. One of the things I really like is how many options there are throughout the property to stop and grab a bite to eat or pick up something sweet. There's always somewhere to wander off to and something to enjoy. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. It really is nice having a little beach getaway this close to home!

The staff is very concerned with water safety and taught us some new things we did not know. My only tip is not everything is open at once- for example the bigger slides and lazy river weren't open when we were there so maybe call ahead so you know what you're getting. The biggest difference was how much stricter everything seems to be now. Anyone under 17 has to take a swimming test just to use the diving boards, which honestly seems a little ridiculous, especially for older kids and teenagers who clearly know how to swim. Even the lazy river has become overly strict. In the past, I've always been able to enter from the exit if I was already right there, but now you absolutely MUST walk around and enter through the designated entrance. I understand having rules for safety, but some of these little things felt unnecessarily rigid and took away from the relaxed, fun atmosphere I remembered. The staff also seemed more annoyed and less friendly than during my previous visit. Nothing terrible happened, but the overall vibe was definitely different. I had such a great experience here two years ago, which is why I was excited to come back with my friends. Unfortunately, this visit just didn't live up to what I remembered. It feels like there are more rules, more restrictions, and a lot less of that easygoing, family-friendly atmosphere that made it so enjoyable before.
