I ate here in a pinch after realizing my chosen restaurant was just a takeaway place, and I wanted something better to see myself off from Ireland. So I at least accomplished that. The seafood chowder here is yet another variation - I only saw fish in there although the menu said shellfish, but there were large chunks of fresh and smoked fish. Since their posted specials (outside) are only available on weekends (thanks, sign - but at least they were honest about it before bringing me anything I had to pay for), I tried the posh fish & chips. It was pretty good - definitely not your usual fish & chips, and the portion was deceptively decent. The sauce was too light on flavour and portion to really work with the potatoes, which were perfectly crisped Irish golds by the way. The fish was crispy outside and had the hint of cured/salty-smoky on the inside, definitely a lighter smoke on the salmon than you might get in Canada or New York. I washed it down with something else you don't really see in the states, Smithwicks pale ale. (Unlike most Irish pubs, there were mostly lighter beers here, pales and lagers, with Guinness holding down the dark side alone.) Nothing to write home about, but at least I ended the day on a high note. read more
