Fortune Gym is a diamond in the rough. It's a rough-and-tumble gym that opens its arms to anyone as long as you aren't a disrespectful jerk. The trainers are varied and great, taking the time to help grow your boxing/fighting technique as well as kick your butt for a workout in group classes or one-on-ones. I have never found a workout as hard, grueling, and fulfilling as the ones I submit myself to at Fortune. And it shows in my performance, body, and boxing technique. Hard work will equal results. You'll find all kinds of people here--pro boxers/MMA/fighters to everyday people like me. You don't need to be a fighter to train here, but you need to be able to train and work like one. "Go Hard or Go Home" is Fortune's motto. Don't come here to mess around. It's not for the faint of heart. The gym has a lot of different equipment, some really old, some somewhat new. If you're coming here for equipment/weight machines/cardio machines alone, it's not the gym for you. If you're coming here to box, to fight, to find functional fitness, you're at the right spot. There's a cable machine, a squat rack, racks of dumbbells, various cardio machines, TRX stuff, kettlebells, and a lot of other random stuff like sledgehammers and tires. It's usually swelteringly hot so expect to get your sweat on. Prices are as follows: -$185 for monthly gym and unlimited classes -$85 gym access -$25 drop-in class The owners, Justin Fortune (former heavyweight boxing champ) and his wife, Tamara, are the best. Their sense of humor is hard to beat and they'll make sure you work hard, but not without laughing in between gasps for air. They're there every day. They know your name and they know how to beat you up. This gym is their baby and they pour their own lifeblood into it to make it what it is. I went here three or so years ago and then I moved, but as soon as I came back to the area, I re-joined and have been here for ten months now (again). I have used a lot of boxing and fitness gyms in my time and I can tell you that this gym is by far the best. First off it's he real deal. Professional fighters train here alongside joe public. Everyone is treated with respect and there are no egos. It has a great energy like the gym motto says 'go hard or go home' a great place to come and have a top workout. My favorite thing about the gym is it's character. It has brilliant memorabilia on the walls from Justin Fortunes career as a fighter and coach and it is a privilege to train alongside a top figure in the sport of boxing. This gym is a great classic boxing gym located in Hollywood. I came here actually because of a session with Kenneth Han aka fatboyshrinkmethod he is knowledgeable and upfront. Really patient whether you're trying to becoming a boxer, or just learn the fundamentals of boxing. He doesn't over promise anything and is very structured in learning diligently and a timely place. I recommend him and he's great as a one on one trainer. Really crafting on what you could do better and helping you add things on. Find him on social media @fatboyshrinkmethod and give him a try. When I left Long Beach I needed to find a boxing gym that I liked as much as the one I trained at there. Didn't have the same experience as the other positive reviewers. Walked in on a Wed. evening inquiring about boxing classes, as I have kinda let myself go and need to get back into shape. I've been doing boxing training on and off for about two years. Dave (guy at front desk) was friendly and helpful, explaining how everything works: $15 for a day pass to use the gym (including classes if applicable) $70/mo gym membership $30/mo in addition to gym membership to take group classes Let's start with the gym: There is fairly little equipment, (a couple of treadmills, three misplaced spin cycles, a small weight area), but there are a bunch of punching bags, so that's pretty good. The equipment is old and a little beat up. looks kinda grimy too. not that big a deal for me because i wasn't really interested in using the gym equipment. The "locker room" is a room with some benches and hooks and a rack of tiny 10"x10" lockers that wouldn't fit my bag, and even if they could, they were ALL full. but this is definitely not worth $70/mo. Class: Paid the $15 and took the 6:30 Boxing & Conditioning class with Kenji. I was there early, stretching and wrapping, kinda checking out the place and the people. There were 10 people in the class in a fairly small area. Kenji arrived and I guess he knew everyone there except for me, but didn't make any effort to introduce himself or see where I'm at in terms of ability. This class should be called simply Conditioning, as there was precious little boxing going on, and zero boxing instruction. Crunches, mountainclimbers, pushups, jumping jacks, running laps around the parking lot (7 laps in total), etc. 2 bag stations and 1 mitt work station, and TONS of shadow boxing. Kenji's favorite phrase must be "now back to shadow boxing!" During all exercises where Kenji wasn't holding mitts, he was texting/emailing on his phone. This really got me. No addressing individuals, not adjusting form, nothing. Sometimes he didn't even look up when he announced "now back to shadow boxing!" I understand this is a group class, but I still expect some modicum of attention from the instructor. After the class, he made it a point to call every person out individually by name and tell them good job... except for me. I don't need the validation, but it just shows his level of interest. Full disclosure: I sucked in the class; had to take several breaks because i'm outta shape and don't have great conditioning. However, I DO require some boxing instruction to go with the conditioning. There were people doing individual training in the ring, and it was interesting to watch. Maybe personal training here is where it's at. I don't know... but $100/mo for a grimy gym and impersonal group "classes"? There are better options. read more

Pretty Little Liars. (You might get this pun if you continue reading). I was leaving to Med School in a month and wanted to train. So I bought a month's worth of classes. Two days later, mom goes to the hospital. Unexpected surgery. She's blind. I'm the only caregiver. So I call Fortune and asked for a refund. Owner says he will grant it, but didn't know how to use Square. I called again later to see what the status of my refund is. They decided that they no longer grant refunds. Liars. So, why wasn't I told this in advance? I didn't sign any waivers that stated this. They said I did. Liars. The waiver I did sign was a liability form for my death. I filed a complaint with my CC company. They totally did not mention that my mom was hospitalized. Ugh, liars! Yeah, they did offer me credit to the gym... But why the heck would I go back if they didn't care about their potential clients?! I know it's Hollywood, but it shouldn't just be about the money. A success business cares about their clients and their wellbeing. If you're looking for a boxing gym, City of Angels will treat you like family. P.s., True Warrior Fitness/Toby Grear taught there. When it comes to family, Toby values the importance of family. I recommend you check him out. You'll get one hell of a workout. Joined a few months ago after attending 24 hour fitness at the Hollywood Arclight for a year. Fortune Gym is not necessarily what you need if your primary focus is on lifting weights, however, as far as being an old school boxing gym, the only thing that's missing is Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago. Then again, Anatoliy Dudchenko (current IBF # 3 & IBF I/C Champ, UNBC & WBF Intercontinental and WBA NABA Light Heavyweight Champion) who looks the part of Ivan trains there and there's a signed picture of Rocky on the wall, so you're half way there... In summary, the gym is effective if you're looking to lose weight, focus on cardio, learn/train in boxing, kickboxing, mma, or any martial art for that matter. It's also a great environment to meet great people, get a few pointers to sharpen your game, and occasionally run into your share of current and former prize fighters such as Anatoliy, Lamon Brewster (Former WBO and WBC Heavyweight Champion), Chris Byrd (Former WBO, USBA, and IBF world Heavyweight Champion), Frankie Duarte (Hall of fame bantamweight and legendary old-school boxer / Owner of Strictly Boxing), Justin Fortune, Fabricio Werdum (Pride and UFC), and so on. read more

I've been coming here for about a year. This place is a real find for anyone looking to get serious about boxing or conditioning through boxing (the greatest conditioner in the world). I walked in a complete novice and was given a mitt workout by Justin, the 22 year old wunderkid who moves like greased lightening. By the end of the hour session, I was hooked. It was the most fun I'd ever had while sweating - and I was exhausted at the end of it. Prices are extremely reasonable and they'll lend you gloves/wraps the first few times. Most days you can walk in and ask for a workout - if you get Macka you'll get a flavor of what Rocky Balboa felt like when he was training. These people are as authentic as it gets. Moreover, they are somehow extremely nice and they love introducing newbies to the sport. This is a very upbeat and pleasant place to get in shape. Yes, there'll be days when you're working out alongside world-champs and superstars. Other days it'll be full of MMA guys looking to round out their games. Often there is someone being interviewed or maybe a film crew following someone's workout. The place really has a nice energy to it. read more

This is my first experience boxing and I wanted to come and train with the best. Jose is my trainer at Fortune and I absolutely love him. He is big on technique and really is a great teacher. I am an athlete, but I definitely feel the burn boxing with Jose. Along with boxing equipment they have all the essentials for weight lifting and area to improve on strength. Not a bad gym. Positives: Have a treadmill and weights which many boxing gyms dont. Even have a mat for muay thai and grappling. Its small and cozy. Peolple there are generally pretty cool. Negatives: The major oversight on there part is having a hard ceramic floor surrounding the heavy bag, so if u sweat ur constantly slipping. Almost broke my neck on numerous occasions. Gotta be careful there. The have huge metal beams right next to the heavy bags so u cant circle the bags, u can only punch them from from one side or so. The day fee is now $20 (up from 15) and that doesnt include any mitt rounds. Other gyms that have a day rate that high give u two rounds of mitts. read more

I have been working out with Justin for 12 years. Right before I went to make Cowboys and Aliens I trained with Justin and was able to do all my stunts because he prepared me so well physically. A couple other actors in the movie workout here and it was a great source of bonding for us. Justin and the other trainers push you according to your ability. Once I found Fortune's, I never left. The training can't be beat. My favorite class has always been the Saturday Suicide Circuit. Fortune Gym is the best gym I've ever been apart of. It is tucked away in the heart of Sunset Blvd. The boxing classes are great and the staff is a lot of fun. I like that they take fitness and boxing very seriously but you don't have to be a professional to participate or get pointers from boxing trainers. I initially started with just regular workouts but was motivated to take their boxing clases and it has been an awesome experience that turned me into a tough chick!
