Professor Jeff greeted us soon after we came in while he was in a private lesson with a few students. He had some unfortunate news as "All levels" doesn't include children...and my kid is a small 8 year old. I should have clarified and not have assumed anything. But Professor was extremely generous and offered my kid to sit in the adult class which was quickly turned down by the Professor running that class. And without hesitation Prof. Jeff had one of his younger orange belt coach help instead. She went over some fundamentals and also helped with techniques that needed tweaking for better results. The enthusiastic coach, Emi(sp?), was amazing with our little guy. Out weighted and sized but Mateo learned so much from her excellent communication, easy to understand style of teaching, and physically demanding sparing! We can easily see that the bar is set high in this school. If we lived here, we'd be a part of this team! Thank you Professor Jeff, Coach Emi, and Gracie One!!!

Went here for about two years, one in the kids class and then in the adults class when I was 15. I was going three times a week for about 4-5 months, and routinely brought up wanting to do a tournament. Maybe it was just a busy time for Coach, but he was pretty vague on what to focus on for my first tournament, and just said show up to class which I did. I signed up for the tournament, told Coach I'd be there, and he didn't even give me extra training the week leading up to it. I get to the tournament, the weigh in goes fine, but Coach was no where to be seen. Even during both of my matches, he wasn't there like the other coaches were. During the actual rounds, I held out for the whole time limit both times, but once it went past my wrestling knowledge I was a fish out water since we never sparred as intensely as an actual match. If you want to learn self defense and don't care about competition, go here for a few years and then learn Muay Thai. Also, in class, very few people treated me like an adult cause I was 15, which sounds like a valid reason why they wouldn't, but every paying customer deserves respect.

When I…read morewalked in with my two week pass there was no one there to greet me, but a trainer(possibly manager) waved me over and told me where the locker room was, and that I should sign in. That was it. No tour, no nothing. I didn't even sign a waiver. I understand that that this guy couldn't really do anything because he was working with a client, but this was even more casual than 24 hour fitness. For the two weeks that I was there, I saw only two other people working out there without trainers. Because this is really for people who workout with trainers, this is an interesting environment. It's the opposite of a meat-and-greet like LA fitness, it feels very cliquish. Everyone is paired up. Except for me. I'm all alone. Because this is for personal training, no group classes are offered, so this is not a place to go to if you want to do the occasional yoga or spin class. I also have to say that I was worried when I came in that I would see all the latest fads being done here. When I see commercials for EXTREME TRAINING I just kind of shut off. I've never been attracted to the flashy stuff, more of a strong fundamentals kind of guy. So I was worried that I would see people flailing at cardio ropes and stuff, but the exercises the trainers were having their clients do was much more basic, less trendy, then what I was expecting. A pleasant surprise. Layout/facilities This place consists of three rooms. The first room is the machines/cardio equipment. I think the first room is for personal trainers working with clients only, but if that's the case it is stupid because there are some machines/equipment that can only be found in the first room. For example, the dip rack and triceps extension machines are only in the first room. I used the first room and I didn't pick up any weird looks. I also made darn sure to be super polite when asking if the trainer was using equipment I wanted to use. The second room is the DB rack with some more machines and a bench rack. They have dBs that go up to 120, but for the life of me I could not find the 25 pounders. This was highly annoying. The second room is a little different from the other two because there is no music playing in that room. It's dead quiet. I actually like it, as I tend to find music distracting, rather than amp me up. The third (and personal fav of mine) is for Olympic lifting. They've got two squat racks, two Oly platforms, and two difference set of bumper plates. This was definitely my favorite room. They even have a bowl of chalk for me to use! Even though the trainers use this room all the time not once did they have their client perform squats/deadlifts/overhead press. So there was no wait to use the equipment. Locker room It's quite serviceable, they provide everything you would need with the exception of aftershave (do gyms just not believe in aftershave?!?!?!?!). It seemed clean with the exception of the faint smell of mildew. The smell, it felt like, came from poor ventilation rather than a lack of cleaning. They shower stalls were perfectly fine and the soap/shampoo was nice as well. They even offered towels, so that's really nice. This place is really for people who want to work with a trainer, I definitely didn't feel too welcomed since I didn't want to use a trainer.

As a former high school wrestler, I wanted to become good at no gi jiu jitsu most of all. The coaches impressed me with their technique but it was the community cultivated by both Amanda and Caleb that made it worth it. This gym made me feel like there was a place for me in jiu jitsu. My skills improved exponentially due to my confidence and sense of belonging improving. I highly recommend New Concept to anyone, especially women looking for a great team and place to either try out the sport or train as a competitor. Tried Diesel Fitness today because it is one of the few gyms that remained open through the ice…read morestorm. Read through previous reviews before going, so was interested in what to expect. I appreciated that when I arrived, I mentioned it was my first time in the gym and offered a very short, quick tour (less than ~3 minutes, which I very much appreciate as a lot of gyms spend too long with the tour and try hard to sell the place before you've even tried the equipment). The gym is solid with diversity in selection of equipment. I saw four power racks which is impressive for a gym of this size in the Uptown Dallas area (for reference, LA Fitness in Uptown is at least 5x the size and only has two racks), but only saw one bench with a rack for bench press. The person who toured me also mentioned it's do whatever you like, so I assume they are flexible in what you use and how. Only thing to note/consider is the gym is fairly small. Although it's well set up and has good equipment, I went at 1pm on a Friday and all four racks were utilized so would be concerned going at prime times. Overall it was a good experience, I'll be looking forward to returning when need another gym or want the specialized equipment.
