She sought to portray the experience and prejudice faced by African Americans in the early 20th century American South. Her most famous novel is Their Eyes Were Watching God which was published in 1937. She also wrote more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabama, grew up in Eatonville, Florida, and spent the last two years of her life in Fort Pierce. She passed away in a St. Lucie welfare home after suffering a stroke. She is buried in the Garden of Heavenly Rest. She was largely unrecognized during her lifetime and came to prominence in the 1970's. The Zora Neal Hurston Branch Library was named for the author and is the first stop on the the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail, a series of 8 stops that were important in the life of Zora Neal Hurston during her time in Fort Pierce. Dust Tracks on a Road is the name of Zora Neal Hurston's autobiography. There is a large kiosk about Hurston outside of the front of the library. The library has a large resource of audio and visual material related to Zora Neal Hurston. On the walls of the library hang Ade Rossman's "Zora Art Series," a series of paintings that were commissioned in 2006 by the St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Department. The library hosts lectures about topics relating to Hurston. The library also has other materials not related to Hurston that one would expect to find at a public library.

Thru have one in order don't even own the book. The bureaucracy of having it possibly out into a book sale or sent to another branch is nuts. Too bad I'm sure their patrons are losing out fir them not willing to accept a brand new hardcover book into their collection.

It is located in front of the Rupert J. Smith Law Library. The historical sign says that St. Lucie County was formed in 1844 and recreated in 1905. It is believed that this part of Florida was named for St. Lucie of Syracuse (283-304 AD) who was a Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution. The Spanish were the first European explorers to reach Florida in the 1500's. One of the earliest references to St. Lucie (English version) was the 'Santa Lucia' Spanish colony located between Stuart and Vero Beach. As noted by the sign, the native inhabitants at the time were the Tequesta. After Florida became a state the U.S. government sought to move native people, the Seminoles who had previously been moved from Georgia by the government into Florida, west of the Mississippi which resulted in the Seminole Wars. The army established forts around Florida to chase the Seminoles. Fort Pierce established in this area in 1837, became the county seat. It was named for Major B.K. Pierce, the brother of Franklin Pierce who set up the fort. The settlement that sprang up around the fort became the City of Fort Pierce. This sign gives a brief glimpse of the history in this area. If you are interested in learning more and seeing historical artifacts, you can visit the St. Lucie Historical Museum also located in Fort Pierce. The museum has several displays exploring St. Lucie's history from the earliest humans, the Tequesta and Ais people to today.
