It is in a stately old house - we were seated in the library - a beautiful room with built in bookshelves and hanging chandeliers. The menu was impressive, but I wanted to compare their fish and chips to the others I had around London. The portions were great and it tasted the same as it did at the Swan, so they tied for the best fish and chips we had on our trip. Service was outstanding - the best we experienced on our trip. Our server was present, knowledgeable, attentive, and very friendly. He made our experience that much better.

We ordered the cod fish and chips as well as an order of onion rings. The onions were battered in a flaky crust and the onions themselves were quite sweet. The chips were alright, not my favorite, but the cod was the real star of the show. Overall, I was able to have the British fish and chips experience and have it well. It has classic dark wood ambience inside, and a small patio out the back of the basement (apparently Queen's lead singer used to be a regular, so this is named the Mercury Bar) Food is ok. Maybe 1 cut below top-tier pub food. Scotch egg was a tad runny, and served with Oxford sauce that is more sour and less good than the HP Brown Sauce it replaces. Lamb Sunday Roast was a bit tough, and came with a paltry 4 roast potato segments of diminutive size. Service is excellent; consistently friendly and helpful. They are eager to fix things when matters go awry. The pub was recently closed for renovations, which seems mainly to have been making a new, larger Gents in the basement, and turning the old Gents' into a 2nd Ladies' room on the staircase. Fellow patrons seem to come more for drinks than food. I like this place, and I'll be back.

One eventually came to our table after sitting awhile. I of course had to try the fish n chips. A couple of veggie burgers were ordered and a regular burger. Surprisingly happy hour was still on at 8 o'clock so drinks were ordered. The food all came at the same time and everything was cool. The fish had a nice flavor from the fried batter. To me it was similar to Long John Silvers as far as the batter is concerned, but slightly better quality overall. The fries were standard. The only thing horrible was the very bland mashed green peas. They should be omitted from every pub across the country, but I think it is a traditional item included with the fish. The cocktails were good as well as the price. The sticky toffee pudding was something else I was advised to try while in London. I must admit it was really delicious. It came with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a warm buttery toffee sauce to pour over. It was delightfully warm and sweet and paired well with the ice cream. The cake itself was moist enough on its own with notes of brown sugar and molasses. I could have had seconds and thirds of this desert. Yum! The majority of my party didn't think the food was fantastic. The burgers happened to be somewhat alright. This was a first for me having pub food and I would have more again as long as I stick to the basics.

It was the last dinner we had during our most recent trip to London, two weeks ago! It was a great way to end the trip We placed a reservation for dinner and ate there before seeing play that night. We would have stayed longer if the play wasn't starting soon after. The place has a great ambience. We quickly noticed how Ffiona treats her guest with care and kindness upon arrival. I let Ffiona know about not having dairy in my meals and she was clear on what could be adapted to not have dairy and which items to avoid completely. We truly enjoyed everything we ate, and had to be careful not to stuff ourselves. We had the sheppards pie, fish and chips, aubergine fritters, a tasty salad with some vegan cheese and a couple of desserts. They some great drink options too! We had a mocktail. Ffiona communicated that there was optional service charge that could be removed upon request before we even presented our card for payment. We did not have it removed due to the great service we recieved. Next time we are in London, we will surely make a visit here.

Both our orders arrived within 10-15 minutes and were very well played. They both looked appetizing and were both demolished despite us not being particularly hungry when we arrived. We also shared a lightly dressed fig & soft greens salad. The dressing was on the sweet side but went very well with our mains. I STRONGLY suggest a visit...a reservation may lessen your need for the luck we had that evening.
