We've now used Form and Function for two projects and continue to strongly recommend them for your landscaping projects. Luis is attentive and detail oriented. He truly cares about getting the details right. He is also very dedicated to ensuring the homeowner is happy with the outcome of the project. A couple of key things from this phase of our backyard remodel. First, the crew doing the work mistakenly damaged our hose. Before I go further, I'll tell you that hoses have a shelf life...especially if you use the expandable hoses like we like to use. In fact, our go-to is the "Pocket Hose" because of how small they get when not in use. The reason I say this is because they are inexpensive and CHEAP. They really are. We usually go through two of them a year. Again, we're OK with needing to replace them because we like the feature of getting smaller when not flowing water. So, I would never expect the crew to do what they did after breaking it. And that's replacing it. But that is exactly what they did. They even bought a new quick release connector to match our setup. So why is this important? Because it's reassuring to know that they will ensure to leave your property as they found it...except for the work they do. Next is the quality. We had them remove some old landscaping and realign our fence. Many years ago, the backyard was reduced to allow for a better view of the side yard. We wanted to recapture the full backyard. When we did the walk-through, we never discussed weed abatement. But, when leveling the ground and putting a layer of DG down, they put a layer of protective fabric down to prevent weed growth. I consider that to be F&F ensuring it was done right even though we didn't discuss. At the end of all of this, is a strong recommendation for their work as you will definitely get your money's worth when you use them for your projects. We will. read more

We purchased a new construction home so the backyard was completely empty. Out of the contractors that we met with, Luis was the one who spent the most time with us and provided the suggestions we were looking for as people who weren't sure what we wanted. The pricing was fair relative to the other quotes we received and was worth the positive experience. During the project, Luis was patient and quick to respond to questions and make updates. He even traveled to a whole other area to meet us for material selection when we weren't able to be on site. I'm upgrading my review to 5 stars and adding new photos. After the heavy rains this winter, there were a couple of things that needed attention on our newly installed landscape project. I reached out to Luis and he promptly responded, and Jose was out here the very next day. Jose fixed the issues we had with his expert craftsmanship, making the minor repairs to our lighting, stucco, and fencing. It was wonderful to see his great smile and experience his excellent work attitude once again. Once Jose left, I realized I had forgotten to mention an issue with the gate lock. Form and Function Landscapes did a complete overhaul of our back, side, and front yard, and we couldn't be happier with the result. Our house was mostly surrounded by sloped, aging concrete with no usable flat areas. We had some landscaping plans prepared but quickly learned that those plans did not fully account for the topology of our property (especially the side yard) or the right plants that would thrive given the mix of sun and shade in our space. To even further complicate matters, we were simultaneously remodeling our home's interior, requiring detailed coordination between the landscaping team and our general contractor on both logistics and design to accommodate 2 new sets of french doors and various interior/exterior meeting points. Luis, Sean, and their team came through for us on every count. They were extremely communicative every step of the way, working with us to understand our goals and make them come to life. They were readily available via phone, text, and email and were conscientious to set up regular walkthroughs of the site, complete with calendar invites. They remained flexible as the project progressed and we had to make decisions on the fly. They proactively and thoroughly dealt with the unexpected, including a surprise retaining wall whose necessity only became apparent after the work already began. They were consummate professionals every step of the way, working constructively with our general contractor, multiple subcontractors, and even a neighbor's architect. This is true for every step of their organization - we were just as impressed by the workers and foremen as Luis and Sean. My front yard had around 1200 sf of dead grass that had been neglected for years. The HOA was sick of it, neighbors wanted it gone and North Marin Water District was going to give me back $800 to remove and replace my grass with drought-resistant plants. I requested a quote via Yelp and within a few days Luis stopped by to discuss the project. After getting visits from 4 contractors the original quote from Luis wasn't quite apples to apples with the quote I was receiving from other companies due to the scope of work drifting as newer better ideas flowed in. I was able to resurrect Form and Function's quote over the phone which helped speed things along. Now on to the actual project. Disclaimer: I am a senior project engineer who typically manages $500MM solar power plant projects, so my attention to detail has to be on point. I also have terrible OCD, mostly around symmetry and things looking off. So the bar for this project was pretty high. Luckily Luis sent his A-team. Jose and his crew were outstanding. Things I want to highlight: - excellent communication regarding starting date, portable toilet dropoff, coordination with the water district and HOA for approved plants, etc. - everyone showed up on time every day at 730 so we could pow wow on tasks for the day before I left for work so the project did not stall - the crew did a thorough job of daily cleaning the driveway, sidewalks, tools, etc so that the yard looks presentable and we could still park one car on the driveway - fabrication techniques for paths, stairs, concrete work, etc were all done above even the standards that I set out for the project - early on, Jose saw one area where he could add a tiny bit of concrete so that the stairwell extension had exact symmetry, something I missed, and this did nothing but pluck my OCD heartstrings. I knew I was in good hands for the rest of the project - during demolition, we uncovered two underground vaults smack dab in the middle of my yard right where concrete steps were supposed to be formed. Jose and I were able to brainstorm with tape measures and spray paint and in less than 15 minutes had an alternate design that turned out gorgeous - Jose and his team made alternate recommendations post-demolition that only enhanced design and aesthetics, their ideas were never to try and weasel out of work or cost to the company - I was able to incorporate a change order last minute with almost no effort, pricing was totally fair, and my final project looks way better - they had all of their own equipment, everything they needed to get the job done right, total project took 7 working days, faster than I expected - as the job wrapped up, Jose and his team were interested in what they could work on next, so you could see genuine interest and love for what they do and working with clients who show passion for landscaping. We took a tour of the backyard and started making plans for the next installment I wish they had a north bay crew that worked out here permanently because I would give them more work. read more

We found Form and Function after having a backyard design from Yardzen. We are super glad they paired us with Luis and his team. We had originally started with a whole front and backyard makeover, but worked with Luis to change to a multi-phased approach, and he was very accommodating with our changes. Luis made a couple trips out to the house to walk through the plans and gives us some timelines and how the work would go. After the first day of demo we decided to change the plans (again) and have his team also re-do our backyard patio. He was more than happy to change plans and got us estimates super quickly. His team made short work of this first phase which included a new paver patio with walkway to an artificial turf and paver area covered by a gazebo.
