We are new to the area and decided to try this vet for our pets. It was an odd place, and I wondered if it was new, given copious amounts of file boxes piled up in the office area. The front desk staff said very little as I arrived and weren't particularly friendly, even though the place was deserted.. Once in an exam room, I was disappointed to see how dingy and dirty it was. There were no other pets or owners there, so it wasn't the case of not being able to clean adequately because of being very busy. A vet assistant came into the room to take some basic information from me, and before we had even seen the vet, they were trying to sell me their wellness plan, which I declined. Eventually, the vet came in to examine my pet. Again, they were trying to sell the wellness plan. The vet assistant held down my pet for the exam in a very cold and forceful way that I've never seen anyone use before, and my pet was very calm and there was no need to grab her that way! The vet recommended some dental work, and gave a very vague estimate for the amount that it might cost, which was between hundreds to thousands of dollars... I was told that I would be given a printed overview of the potential costs, but that never happened. While checking out, I also requested documents from our other pet's visit a couple of weeks before, which had also not been provided. And for a third time, the staff attempted to sell me the wellness plan. Between the sales pitches, the disorganization, the unsavory presentation of the office, and the rough way my pet was handled, I was absolutely certain by the time I left that we would never come back here. I am very happy to say that I did a little bit of Google searching and found another vet closer to Charlottesville with very high ratings, and we've been much happier there. read more

So we have taken our fur babies to Fork Union for years. This experience I had with the tech went like this: called us while we waited in the car was absent of concern about my babies and only concerned with what vaccines were needing to be updated; she kept talking about what vaccines were needed immediately. I literally had to ask her if she had any intention of asking me WHY the visit was actually scheduled. The reply "ah, why are are they here?" REALLY?!!! I'm concerned for their health and the message I received was that Fork Union was more concerned with getting the money!!!! My advise to this place: if you want to keep clients get RID of employees who show absolutely no human emotion or express concern and offer reassurance... nope... none of that was given... shameful. I interact with sick and scared people who are having the worse day of their lives and have for 33 years... I can tell you firsthand... the initial experience will NOT be forgotten and in many cases the sentiment cannot be redeemed. While waiting in the car for news about my family I have noticed several patients all of whom were greeted warmly... maybe I just got a tech on her worse day... I'm willing to put aside my initial interaction for now. While waiting for our fur babies, another client pulled up and a different vet tech met them at the car, she called the pups by name, was nice and mirrored the concern for the patient. I wish she had took my babies maybe I would have felt better about this place and my babies inside... Dr. Moscato is amazing!! Went over information and updated in regards to my concerns and was VERY through with care instructions and only after all the information was given and talked about did she mention vaccines. She was respectful, thoughtful and even remember the adoption story of one of my babies. She is the reason I would stay at Fork Union. Initial interaction redeemed by this caring, knowledgeable veterinarian. read more

I am here a lot because of boarding and one dog with a chronic disease. I am always greeted professionally and my dogs and cat are always welcomed and treated well. The dogs seem to enjoy coming here to board. They go to the staff willingly and greet them with kisses which tells me they get attention when they stay. The staff has been through issues with both my dogs and have always taken the time to explain the options to me and follow-up on care given. I trust and value the service they provide. read more

We have used Fork Union Animal Clinic since we moved to Buckingham 7 years ago. First for our then 2 dogs (a husky beagle mix and a shepard hound mix) and since for them and the expanding pack (2 more dogs for us, a rescue hound and a 130lb Mastiff, and one for our son, a hard to handle rescue hound, great dane, shepard mix)) While the Vets have changed over the years, all have been great with our dogs and have given them a very high degree of care (often getting down on the floor with them) The staff has always been very friendly and helpful. Our dogs actually like to go to the vet and seem to enjoy their visits, even when they get shots or have blood drawn. read more

I've been taking my animals there for 5 years now but I will not go back. I've never been happy with them but they're the only game in town and they know it. Only seem to be interested in money (they're outrageously expensive), doctors have poor bedside manners - with the exception of Dr. Grayson - she was wonderful but is no longer there. They did not have any appointments available for my injured cat even though as I said I have taken numerous animals there over the past 5 years. Will not allow pet parents to be in exam rooms (Covid?! Really?) which I find to be highly suspect. I believe it's in the animals best interest to have a familiar face with them especially when injured/sick. Very rude staff, no compassion whatsoever. Slate River Animal Hospital in Buckingham is my suggestion - good country doctor, worth the extra few miles for me. read more

I just moved to Palmyra from Richmond and needed to find a new vet for my almost 16-year-old dog. I chose Fork Union Animal Clinic based on great reviews on Yelp and on FB. I also picked this clinic because they do in-home euthanasia, which is very important to me when that dreaded time comes. Dr. Kendra Philman was incredibly kind, compassionate, thorough, knowledgeable, and patient with all my questions. She was very gentle with my dog, and came up with some suggestions to hopefully increase her quality of life and decrease her pain. She spent a LOT of time with us, going over my many concerns and explaining things with honesty and empathy. I never once felt rushed, and I could tell Dr. Philman truly cares. I was incredibly nervous to try a new vet after going to a really great Richmond vet for almost 16 years. However, I am so thrilled to have ended up with a vet who is so outstanding. I definitely breathed a huge sigh of relief after our first visit. I was also extremely impressed with the women who work at the front desk, as well as the vet techs. Everyone is so caring, friendly and helpful! I feel that the price of service is very reasonable as well. read more

Fork Union Animal Clinic has been a blessing since moving to the area a few years ago. They have been there for all of our dog's needs. They are great about working him in if there is an emergency or something that came up overnight. The follow up care that is given is above and beyond what I expected. Ricky had his first visit with Dr. Ashley today. While it was our first time with her, we had the same great level of care we have experienced with all of the Drs in the practice. read more

I have high expectations for the vet office I use, so when we returned to the area which we left several years ago, it seemed an easy decision to return to the same vet office with which we had been very pleased. We soon learned that things had changed...a lot! I had two phone conversations with the office staff prior to our visit. In both cases, the staff person was a little short, and in no way could be described as warm and welcoming. We arranged for one visit with a vet tech, as our dog was due for her rabies vaccine. I experienced the same front desk atmosphere as with the phone conversations. There was no warm welcome or conversation other than asking the name, and telling me to have a seat. The vet tech was friendly and did her job. Unfortunately, I cannot evaluate any of the vets, because after returning home I knew I would not be returning to the Fork Union Animal Clinic. The vets here may very well be animal loving and professional, but normally, the front office staff is an accurate reflection of the doctors. I think it should also be noted that the majority of the Yelp reviews are several years old, and the photos are not accurate. The clinic has three female vets, not any males as the photos depict. We are now driving twice as long to a vet clinic that is everything we hoped for. If you are looking for a friendly, welcoming, efficient front office staff - both over the phone and in person - as well as vet techs and veterinarians who are warm, dedicated, and professional, you can't do better than Old Dominion Animal Hospital in Charlottesville. The doctors and staff seem to be quite competent and do good work. However, their policies regarding billing are shady. I took a kitten for an annual "wellness" exam and to have her series of shots updated since I moved from another state. As I was establishing her as patient, I saw nothing wrong with paying for an office visit. She was also spayed a week or so later. However, she needed a booster shot a few weeks after her initial visit. They again charged me for a wellness visit. I called and inquired and was told it was their policy to charge for a wellness visit every time a distemper vaccine was given. I'm sorry, but I've been to other vets over the years, and I've never seen such a blatant attempt to pad the bill in my life. Follow-up appointments should be billed at a lesser rate. My kitten didn't need two "wellness" visits within a month. Wellness visits are considered annual appointments. I called another vet and inquired about their policies, and they said as long as you have seen the doctor within the last six months, any appointments for tests or shots or such would be considered a "tech visit." I will be taking my kitten and my older cat to another veterinary office. If you're in search of a vet, inquire about their billing policies before taking your animals there. I never thought to inquire, though, because I had never seen such a billing scam before in my life. read more

My dog died last week because of end stage congestive heart failure. We were seen at Fork Union Animal Hospital last June and were told he had a heart murmur. No tests or follow up was recommended. His symptoms should have been followed up and recommendations made. Our dogs cannot speak and therefore we rely upon competent veterinary care. He died last week of end stage congestive heart failure, and went untreated, and his death could have been prevented. We had to watch him die in pain & distress! The vet at Fork Union did not have it in her notes from last year! No surprises there, and nor do they have a record of shots he got there recently. Our dog was nearly blind, but died suddenly without any warning in the vets arms at the Animal Emergency Clinic. I would NEVER trust any vet, or recommendations from the staff there. Our dog would be here now if his symptoms last year were followed up! I could care less that nothing was documented. I fully expected to get that response. read more

Since moving to this area in 1999, all of our many 4 legged house pets have been treated wonderfully by Dr DeNae, Dr Sam and the team. We have had several unusual ailments over these years, Dr DeNae had so much patience with our kitty who thought he was a lion, while treating his Hepatitis and GI issues. Dr DeNae has always giving us options and let us know there was no bad choice for us to make. Dr Sam did amazing ACL Surgery on our Border Collie Mix many years ago, and just this past year did a great job with a tooth extraction for our Hound mix. I live between the two vet clinics in my area. I tried the 'other' one and decided to stay with FUAC. My previous vet was wonderful. When I 'inherited' Dr. Philbin I didnt know how it would go. I have 3 senior cats, one has diabetes so she is a challenge. Dr. Philbin is very attuned to me and to my cats and their needs. Talks to me at length on the phone if need be and when in the clinic will take time to address any issues I have. I board the diabetic cat here and have only had one problem with that in telling my cat sitter about the insulin that needed to be refrigerated. The small issues I've had over the years have been dealt with and addressed appropriately. They werent ignored like some places might have. I felt and feel like they value their clients by trying to make things right. I never feel rushed during a visit and am seem fairly quickly when arriving. Test results come back quickly and Dr. P relates the results soon as she can. I've been coming here 16 years and will continue to do so. Prices are what I assume most vets charge. i've bought PAW plans which helps some. Give them a shot. read more
