    Tater tots from Tex Burger
    Makiko N.

First visit to Salem and upon arriving I needed a quick bite so decided to head to Fork Forty. It has a good variety of options for a food courtyard, but depending on the time some places may be closed. I ended up trying the tater tots from Rex Burger and the baba ganoush from Syrian Kitchen. My friend had the hummus and falafel from Syrian Kitchen, so I tried the falafel. Tater tots: they were fried to perfection and paired well with ranch. The portion is generous for the price too. Baba Ganoush: I wish it was a bit more eggplanty.. it wasn't bad but i wish there was a bit more flavor. Falafel: my friend insisted it's terrible.. but I didn't think it was bad. It was a bit heavy on the cornmeal.. so not like the falafel I'm used it. All in all it's a fun food court that allows you to try a few places in one shot.

I've become a new frequent diner at this hidden gem of an establishment. Where do I begin, let me count the ways. Conveniently located in downtown Salem, this place is easy to find and hard to drive by without wanting ti stop. I've visited twice this week and have a feeling I could possibly get a 3rd in before the week's end. I stumbled upon this place while looking for somewhere I could conveniently park right in front since I had my little weenie dog with me that way I could keep the windows down. There's usually at least one street parking open, depending on the time and day, I imagine it could get more difficult to find parking but 100% worth a block walk if need be. I have managed to get front row 2 out of my 2 visits. The first time I walked in, I felt a very friendly environment with an open dining hall area with little windows of different food vendors wrapped around the area. It was quite difficult to make a decision but I landed on the Syrian place. I believe it's called the Damascus Café. I had the best beef kebab I've ever had in my life. I actually dreamt about it that night. Just two days later of course I couldn't get the place out of my mind. I decided to stop in a second time but this time I tried out the pizza place. I believe it's the best and Salem . Every vendor has been very friendly and welcoming there is a bar in the back, where the restrooms are so if you're up for a drink, they have that too. I'm looking forward to trying out the other places. I'll update my review as I try each spot.

We were the only people there, but instead of serving us, the attendant made us wait 10 minutes while he mopped the floor. We left and walked to the frozen yogurt place where that attendant dropped what she was doing to serve us, then went back to her task.

    From Chubby Bao. My favorite.

Have now obtained food (and a cocktail) from all 6 restaurants inside this fun and funky food hall. La Lucciola has excellent pizza and they always seem actually happy to have customers walk up to their counter and place an order (this is ALMOST the same with almost all of the establishments in here...). Rex has delicious grilled chicken sandwiches on delicious buns, and very tasty varieties of french fries. Good food, fast service. Chubby Bao: something with chorizo beef and mouth-wateringly spicy-good rice, always a reliable hit. Bao sandwiches are also spot-on. The Best Goose Bar: good cocktails, and you can bring your food in there. They have a board game night when drinks are discounted (I think). Bar service is hit or miss. Sometimes friendly, sometimes very annoyed to have to wait on someone. Meh. Slick Licks: many flavors, good quality ice cream. Get some to go and enjoy at home for later. Syrian Kitchen: good domas, good shishkebob, everything good really. Takes a long while to cook it though, but it was very fresh and tasty. One last thing: they have three wooden picnic tables on the street for outdoor dining, and are always filled with people enjoying the food from inside, but a word of caution...if you are eating outside on a Friday evening, unfortunately, you are not far enough away from the intersection of State Street and Liberty Streets to avoid hearing that awful street musician with the out-of-tune electric guitar, amp, and total lack of singing ability who parks herself at that corner every Friday afternoon/evening from around 3 or 4 pm until 9 or 10 pm. If you're just dining outside quickly, you won't notice that she only knows four chords and plays the same four "songs" over and over again, but any longer stay and it will be hard to eat your food through your clenched teeth and splitting earaches. Sad situation but that's Friday nights in this neighborhood.

Got the baklava, but it was made with almonds colored green instead of pistachio. Honestly so disappointed I love pistachio so much. Still ate most of it because the rose water and pastry dough was good though. Don't get this :( pizza was delicious from the pizza place though!!

Been wanting to visit this place in a while and we finally made our presence there. Its a mini food court. Love the fact that there's different options to choose from. Wanted to try them all, but we sticked to two options; Chubby Bao & Mr Coqui (Asian & Puerto Rican). Even though I have Asian in me, I've got to give this one to the Puerto Rican cuisine. All in all, I'm glad I tried both. Still need to make my way back to try the others. I will be seeing you again Fork Forty! Dislikes: Seating (bar stools) are uncomfortable.

However, the Kohl's in the center had customers and employees with a clean and neat shopping experience. Now that JCPenney (and long before that, Liberty House) is gone, the "Marion Parkade" near Kohl's and cinnebarre became more popular due to its skybridge right into Kohl's. It was still easy to park and all kinds of cars are parked here. I felt very safe leaving my vehicle. If one parks in the other free downtown garage, you will be in for a short outdoor walk to enter the center. Today the food court was busy and a new Italian restaurant is coming soon to the first level where Honey baked Ham was. There are two large arcades on the second level. If you want to visit some local shops or Ross, those are here too. Many mall employees were on duty during my visit for security and housekeeping. Definitely still a mall for teens & early 20somethings. An older customer might find more interesting stuff walking south into downtown Salem's streets.

If this is Lancaster Mall 2.0, it looks the part. The feel on the other hand, is a whole 'nother story. Willamette Town Center got hit pretty hard by the pandemic. Minus the clean, super bright, and modern digs, it is on the verge of becoming a dead mall. There are empty storefronts, almost zero activity on a weekend, and one of the saddest food courts I've seen in a mall. What was once a bustling place of Salem's retail seekers, has become a shell of itself. The only things filling up the parking lot are the stores directly outside of the mall. This place needed a facelift decades ago, but it seems the renovation came just a little too late. Timing is never good and even as Salem changes, it stays the same in many ways. One positive note: I was initially sad to see the Orange Julius location replaced by Burlington Coat Factory (#2) but realized it simply moved to the food court. It really has been the mall's most constant business. While it's not a huge mall, it does have some great anchor stores and nearby conveniences (Target is across the street!) that it's an ideal spot to get your shop on. They had a very nice Christmas tree on display and parking is free and easy. Do remember to bring your reusable bags or pay 5 cents per bag (new law). I love how there was plenty of seating all around - no accidentally bumping into someone else while walking around and exploring all the food options! There were hightops, larger tables for groups of 10+ people or for communal seating, and bar seating at some of the vendors too. The space can also be rented out for private parties, etc. The water stations were scattered thoughtfully around the dining areas so you don't need to go far for water or bussing your table. The bathrooms were reasonably clean as well (with a key code - ask at any vendor to get it). I would come back again to try more food - it's a welcoming space. This visit, the selection was a bit limited and the wait times can be a bit long so if you're paying for parking, make sure to add a bit extra time to avoid rushing your meal. As for the food, I got the spicy garlic ramen with the keto noodles from MATSUNOKI RAMEN. Pretty sure not gluten free, so if you are a gf friend, not the place for you. If you can stand a bit of it, the soup really hit the spot and had a good heat to it. The noodles were not great, had become a ball. The meat in the soup was minimal and more friend bacon than what I'm used to in ramen. The serving size was pretty substantial. If you're in the area with a large group this could be a good place to go.
