Plenty of benches near the bridges. I saw or heard no wild animals, just heard birds. I saw a picture at the beginning of a happy girl holding up a good size largemouth bass, rather surprising as the river is maybe one foot deep. A few annoying flying insects otherwise a nice and quick 1.8 miles and 40 minutes to kill before the race at Rockingham. I did not research to learn what the large abandoned building is at the parking lot or the ruins that have become one with nature about 1/10 of the way into the "hike". Also what are the brick walls that are laying in the river? EDIT: I guess this was a damn for a mill many years ago.

Gorgeous well maintained trails along the river and into the woods; some of the best forest-bathing I have found in the Charlotte Metro area! Be sure to use the CTT app to not only navigate & get Trail info, but you can log your miles and find other trails, some that even connect! I did 4mi (2mi out and back) and it was a relatively easy hike. Had the trails to myself for most of the way out, which on a Saturday was a pleasant surprise, and the solitude was welcome.

We've been starting to explore Charlotte's greenways a bit more recently…read more Previously, we parked at Pineville-Matthews Rd and walked to the Vista Grande Circle parking lot (2 miles one way). This section is the McMullen Creek Greenway. So this time, we parked at Vista Grande Circle and walked to the Johnson Rd parking lot. This is also 2 miles one way on the McAlpine Creek Greenway right until it meets up with the Four Mile Creek Greenway. The parking lot on this side is only big enough for 3-4 cars, but you could probably park on the street in the neighborhood as well. We really enjoyed this section of the greenway, probably a little more than the previous section. There were boardwalk sections here as well. There was a lot more marshy flood plane area here which was cool. If you're looking for a way to get outside in Charlotte, explore your local greenways.

Recently, we've done the portions near Baxter Village, Waxhaw, and South Fork Trail. I know we've done way more than that, but those are the ones that come to mind recently. There are picnic tables, a covered pavillion, disc golf course, public restrooms, with developed parking and its dog friendly. As well, river access for kayaking, fishing and water activities. We took an afternoon drive out to the park and it is definitely worth the effort and time. Legend has it, that Daniel Boone as a boy and his family first used the cave in one manner or another around 1751. There are numerous developed trails with a trailhead at the top. The walk down to the cave is pretty serious, its built wooden steps but its a serious climb down and even more so up. This is the only drawback to visiting the cave. If you are not prepared to climb back up, I didn't count them but its a couple hundred steps easily. I was visiting some friends in Mt Gilead, and we decided to spend a day on the lake. We saw a flyer and decided to give a whirl. John and Vince were incredibly friendly and professional. They seemed like they genuinely wanted us to have a good time on the lake. I called ahead to rent the pontoon for the day, and everything was prepped and ready to go when we arrived at the marina. They even had complimentary drinks for us, which was a nice touch. The water was nice and we swam for a bit. If I make a trip back down to NC this summer, I'll definitely stop by again.

Even on a holiday weekend, the closest neighbor was on the other side of the lake. There was a bathhouse 1road over and a boat ramp that we will utilize the next time we visit.
