The 8th - par 3 with tee box right next to the green. FOoooooour

Just played my first legit winter round! The course was open this past weekend (January 20th, 2018). Huge props to NYV parks dept and the staff for making it happen. When it's in the 50s you expect people to be out there and they were....To the tune of an almost 5 hour round. I'd say I was surprised but the reason for 3 stars is twofold: quality of course layout/ conditions and the lace of play. I've never ever ever played a quick round there. It's a lot of hacker golf and side betting going on. And really there are only a few holes of note to an otherwise stale course design. There's also several tee boxes adjacent to the green and fairways running directly parallel so you're consistently in danger from other golfers shots. It's great to be in nature playing golf, even when you're on top of the Jackie Robinson. But if you have a car I'd recommend Dyker or Pelham- or better yet Long Island or to westchester county public courses (Mohansic is a fantastic course/ value).

This is not a country club and it is not like the midwestern suburban muni courses I grew up with. It is a little bit rough around the edges which I think adds to its character. Crowded? Frankly, I do not understand what the rush is; it's beautiful out here, you're playing golf, does it matter how long it takes you to finish? Important Point #1: You can play golf in New York City at this or one of the other muni courses. This is supposed to be one of those things you give up for moving here instead of LA, Atlanta, Charlotte, Texas, etc. Important Point #2: You can play 9 holes from under $20. Recommendation: Put in 9 on a weekday before work. You'll enjoy yourself.

This place is good for what it tries to be. Located in Woodhaven, Queens, I met a buddy here on a Friday afternoon for a 4 pm tee time. Kind of annoying to drive to from Nassau County Long Island; took me about 45 minutes to drive the 11 or so miles, hit traffic the whole way on the cross island parkway, grand central parkway, and Jackie Robinson Parkway. When I got there, a man in a golf cart informed me it was $2.75 to park in the golf course lot. Why? I'm paying a greens fee, guess they want to keep people from just parking there for free who aren't playing golf as this is New York City. Went to check in, and the snack shack, pro shop, and bathrooms are all in the same building, which overlooks the putting green and first hole from on top of the hill. Snack shack seemed decent, they had burgers, dogs, snacks, and I think beers, and the picnic tables out front perched on the deck offered a nice view of the first hole. Pro Shop is tiny, and I paid $39 for 18 holes with a motor cart. Putting green is tiny and slow, but is good because it's right near the clubhouse and first tee. Course was pretty much packed when we played, we teed off at 4 pm on a Friday, and it took two and a half hours to play the front nine. Course is super tight, I hit no more than a hybrid club off the tee on any hole, and hit hybrid - four iron into the green on one of the par 5s. Course is very narrow and short, trees everywhere, but what do you expect for the middle of queens. Was actually in great condition though; fairways, rough and greens all in good shape. Tee boxes were spotty and left wanting on a few holes. Gas motor cart was old but got the job done, could've easily walked though. Now, I only wanted to play 9, but didn't realize the 9th hole actually ended far away from the clubhouse. Thankfully, I was still able to walk in from the 9th green by following the map on the back of the scorecard, but this is not a place you should try and get in a quick 9, as its slow and 9 is not at all near the clubhouse. This is a great place for newer, beginning, slower, or older golfers, as it is playable for all skill levels.

The course itself is kept in decent shape but the tee boxes need some work- especially on the par 3s.

My phone was dead and I panicked running over to this golf course. The side door was wide open and some young punk was on the other side gossiping with someone. I stepped two feet in because he didn't hear me shouting to call 911. He finally saw me ( I was standing with my cane, obviously hurt." He puffed out his chest shouting and I said" I apologize for entering but you didn't hear me and there's a badly injured woman " He didn't care and shouted" get out you don't belong in here, it's disrespectful " he slammed the door shut and I shouted again" call 911" he didn't call. Fortunately a woman and her husband saw and they called. That young punk will be paid a visit from Karma and when he does, I hope he remembers how badly he treated people in need. Just an awful awful person.

We paid the additional reservation fee to book a tee time online and ended up waiting on a long line anyway as anyone was accommodated if they just walked up. The spacing led to long waits at each hole - with typically three parties in front of us in an ongoing way throughout the course - causing it to take us over 3.5 hours. We needed to rent clubs, but they were out of putters so we had to use mini-golf putters as well. Fun course but one star off for the poor crowd management - if you have 7 mins between tee times online, that should be honored to keep play moving for everyone

The end of the season for golf is rapidly approaching in concert with the changing of the seasons,…read morewith the trees are about two weeks into their foliage. On this day with a 63* temperature, Kissena Golf Course was in perfect shape and the course really showed its beauty. ~The Putting greens: from the practice tee all the way through the round were fast, rolled true and without ball marks, burnt out grassy areas nor and obvious appendages. ~Tee boxes and Fairways: The leaves were blown off the teeing area as well as off the fairways, so a well struck shot would not have you in continual search for your ball. However an offline shot could result in a lost ball penalty, as the leaves would cover your missed attempt. With the issue of leaves aside, it has been a few years since I played Kissena Golf Course because I mostly wrote it of as a "beginners course" playing to a par 64, 4511 total yards from the tips. When the round was going along, playing the back tees I found there were particular holes that I did not recall that posed some significant challenges. Hole number 2 is the number one handicap hole on the course, mainly due to its length of 358 yards which would be a shot par four on most all other championship (par 72) golf courses. But to compare Kissena to the par 72 courses is not a fair comparison, it needs to be judged from an Executive golf course lens. Playing with a beginner, I understood Kissena better as to what it offers someone just coming up in the game. More specifically, people in the same general skill level who are not looking for a challenge that would find them over their heads. I did find some shots that took all of my skill and concentration to pull off. Off the top of my head, the par three 9th hole measuring 190 yards plays uphill about 40 feet, into the breeze and to a small green. Missing short, left and long are all dead man's land. I nailed a 4iron as good as I could hit it and luckily walked away with a par because in actual yardage I had the hole playing closer to 220 yards, probably a bit more. The number 12 hole, par 3 is no picnic either, long and with lots of danger lurking everywhere. The course is set atop some high ground right in the heart of Fresh Meadows and there are particular places on the course where the visuals of Queens are wonderful, not to mention two locations where you can see the Manhattan skyline.

This is possible because Gabe has the teaching and playing experience to coach you in all aspects of your game, whether it's course management or building confidence around your shots. Gabe has elevated my awareness of my own swing and helped me stay committed to making long term swing changes. Like many golfers starting out, I still struggle with the basics like consistent contact, club face control, and release. No instructor can transform your swing overnight, but TRUST he will give you the right things to work on and many ways to work on them. As a result, I am making solid contact with the ball more frequently, have 15+ yards in distance per club, and am hitting straighter shots. Most importantly, Gabe will teach you how to be your own coach. Working with Gabe over time has given me the tools to diagnose and straighten out issues in my own swing even on a day when "I just can't seem to hit the ball." It has also taught me to consume the myriad golf content I encounter online with a critical eye. I know what I need to work on thanks to Gabe, and any of the bad rounds I shoot now and going forward would not be for a lack of excellent instruction. If this is helpful context, I picked up golf in 2020, have mediocre natural hand-eye coordination, and am not a particularly quick learner. All that is to say that if Gabe can help my game this much in six months, he can most certainly help anyone. His encyclopedic knowledge of the golf swing would make him a great coach for complete beginners and advanced players alike.
