This is the most poorly designed course I've ever played. Most of the tee boxes are ~10 feet from the green, so amateur golfers pose a risk to anybody teeing off. Naturally, only amateur golfers play here, so most of the course is a death trap. The fairways are wide but have no room between them, so players are constantly playing from opposite fairways, which is hazardous on its own. On top of the hazards, the tee boxes are in TERRIBLE shape. 3 of them had no grass, only dirt. I implore anybody reading this to play somewhere, anywhere, other than Forest Park Golf Course. read more

My number of rounds at Forest Park number in the hundreds, as it has been my home course for 20-something years. During that long stretch of time I always enjoyed it because you have to flat out, make golf shots. The front side favors a target golfer, as they can manage the course with smart play. Bombers beware, until you 9 tee where you can go driver. A smart player with ball control is a dangerous opponent to take on. (himt) It took me a wintry weekend round to take all of the variables out of what would make a reviewer slam FP. Just looking at the course's offering's regarding layout, hole routing, landscape and the fact it gets a ton of traffic, which explains some conditions of greens and teeing areas in disrepair, Forest Park is a good course for what it is. Fee's have jumped so much in the past years across the board in golf, no course went unscathed. Hint-take seriously the placement of trees that you have to always consider all along the course I will be the first to admit number 3 green is always an issue, even when it was number 17 before the reroute of the course. Number 4 was number 1 tee,(with a mobile home clubhouse and no pro-shop) and so on until 15 tee.. Playing blue tees offer minimal distance from the white tee's, but unless your a +10 or better, stay at the white tee's. Because people unfamiliar with The Rules of Golf, play amazingly haphazard golf with no regard for rules (too many examples to list) that is why play is slow for the most part, one ranger is standard on golf courses and when you have 50% of players that never read The Rules of Golf, what can one possible expect as to play time for a round. If you're a beginner, I urge you to get some rounds under your belt at an easier course. This place is hard, and you're going to lose a ton of balls. Space in NYC is tight, and man are these fairways skinny. At some courses, you can blast a drive slightly off the fairway and still find your ball in the rough or in a gaggle of trees. Here, your ball is gone unless you crush a perfect drive on about 60% of the holes, and you'll be taking a penalty stroke (take your penalties, people -- cheat golf is whack). It's super challenging, and if you can get a good score here, you can get one anywhere. It's not too difficult getting tee times through golfnyc.com, and there are often great deals on a round (snagged a $34 with cart deal recently). Bonus points for being so close to Manhattan. It's about a 40 minute ride on the J, and a 10 minute walk from 75th street. I've played at 6:00am and been into the office by 10:00am given the short commute. Probably the closest course from Manhattan if you're using MTA of any in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. read more

Just played my first legit winter round! The course was open this past weekend (January 20th, 2018). Huge props to NYV parks dept and the staff for making it happen. When it's in the 50s you expect people to be out there and they were....To the tune of an almost 5 hour round. I'd say I was surprised but the reason for 3 stars is twofold: quality of course layout/ conditions and the lace of play. I've never ever ever played a quick round there. It's a lot of hacker golf and side betting going on. And really there are only a few holes of note to an otherwise stale course design. There's also several tee boxes adjacent to the green and fairways running directly parallel so you're consistently in danger from other golfers shots. It's great to be in nature playing golf, even when you're on top of the Jackie Robinson. But if you have a car I'd recommend Dyker or Pelham- or better yet Long Island or to westchester county public courses (Mohansic is a fantastic course/ value). read more

Love this place. When you need to play a round of golf, and don't want to drive, lol, far, this is the place. Challenging enough for most levels of play. We go around noon, with no tee time, and we are driving away. The staff is great as are the gophers, golfers, sorry I had to. This golf course was actually very well kept and in great condition except for the 3rd tee box which was destroyed. The layout is kind of cramped but that's okay, city course. The course was extremely backed up, 6 hours and we skipped 2 holes. However, there were more groups vaping the whole time than swing clubs, hence the back up.. read more

This is not a country club and it is not like the midwestern suburban muni courses I grew up with. It is a little bit rough around the edges which I think adds to its character. Crowded? Frankly, I do not understand what the rush is; it's beautiful out here, you're playing golf, does it matter how long it takes you to finish? Important Point #1: You can play golf in New York City at this or one of the other muni courses. This is supposed to be one of those things you give up for moving here instead of LA, Atlanta, Charlotte, Texas, etc. Important Point #2: You can play 9 holes from under $20. Recommendation: Put in 9 on a weekday before work. You'll enjoy yourself. read more

This place is good for what it tries to be. Located in Woodhaven, Queens, I met a buddy here on a Friday afternoon for a 4 pm tee time. Kind of annoying to drive to from Nassau County Long Island; took me about 45 minutes to drive the 11 or so miles, hit traffic the whole way on the cross island parkway, grand central parkway, and Jackie Robinson Parkway. When I got there, a man in a golf cart informed me it was $2.75 to park in the golf course lot. Why? I'm paying a greens fee, guess they want to keep people from just parking there for free who aren't playing golf as this is New York City. Went to check in, and the snack shack, pro shop, and bathrooms are all in the same building, which overlooks the putting green and first hole from on top of the hill. Snack shack seemed decent, they had burgers, dogs, snacks, and I think beers, and the picnic tables out front perched on the deck offered a nice view of the first hole. Pro Shop is tiny, and I paid $39 for 18 holes with a motor cart. Putting green is tiny and slow, but is good because it's right near the clubhouse and first tee. Course was pretty much packed when we played, we teed off at 4 pm on a Friday, and it took two and a half hours to play the front nine. Course is super tight, I hit no more than a hybrid club off the tee on any hole, and hit hybrid - four iron into the green on one of the par 5s. Course is very narrow and short, trees everywhere, but what do you expect for the middle of queens. Was actually in great condition though; fairways, rough and greens all in good shape. Tee boxes were spotty and left wanting on a few holes. Gas motor cart was old but got the job done, could've easily walked though. Now, I only wanted to play 9, but didn't realize the 9th hole actually ended far away from the clubhouse. Thankfully, I was still able to walk in from the 9th green by following the map on the back of the scorecard, but this is not a place you should try and get in a quick 9, as its slow and 9 is not at all near the clubhouse. This is a great place for newer, beginning, slower, or older golfers, as it is playable for all skill levels. read more

Compared to over the years, the course conditions, in general, have improved greatly, I think. 3rd, 4th, 6th, 11th and 15th tee boxes used to be bare ground with no grass due to lack of sun but now it looks decent. The greatest asset of this course is in its name, Forest Park, with lots of trees which force the player to hit straight. It's definitely a difficult course, but it's a great challenging course for intermediate and advanced golfers who like the challenge. I've probably played here over 200 rounds, but I've definitely yet to conquer it and yet, never gets bored with it. I highly recommend you to play a round. read more

A really interesting tight and hilly course but the experience is destroyed by how long it takes to play. You're going to be waiting awhile on nearly every shot even if you go out at 7 PM. I can not believe I have never reviewed Forest Park Golf Course, so here it is for review number 80. It is on my list of muni courses, however. Forest Park is the second oldest muni in NYC, just behind Van Courtland, built I believe in 1898, and is a challenging track. From the blue tees, it plays just over 6000 yards, so not too long, but with tree lined fairways and tight turns, a good test of golf. This is the closest course to me, around a mile away, so I have played it hundreds of times, but am still put to a good test. I'm not a great player, but not a bad one, and Forest Park will bite you if you are not in position. The conditions, however, sometimes leave a lot to be desired. Today when I played, the greens were in good shape, but that is not always the case. Players do not repair ball marks and, at times, the greens are sketchy. Same with the fairways. Today they were fine, but have played some days when they were torn up. Unfortunately, tee boxes most days are a mess. Probably the main complaint for most is the price. It is 70 or so with a cart, and for an old course in Queens, that is quite expensive, but I have never really felt ripped off. I go as a single sometimes very early, play nine, and with a cart it is a good bargain. Another issue is pace of play. This is a muni, so guys show up in jeans and Zep tee shirts and hack it around, but what can you do. The round can be close to six hours in the summer depending on the time you go, so either get there early, or play later in the day. Overall, fun, challenging course with character. If you want a true golf experience with true players in true golf attire, head 25 miles out to Bethpage where pace of play, price and conditions are tops. read more

For all the money these courses get, you would think they would hire a proper superintendent that knows and understands that the course isn't his front lawn and he has to take care of it properly. I would rate kissena as being 10X better than Forest Park condition wise. The back 9 holes are okay if you can live through the disaster that is the front 9. The greens get aerated in August??? dry, sandy, hard as slate, full of holes, completely unmaintained. crab grass on the greens?? and the tee boxes were no better, having to use an iron to drive my tee in the ground. I have no good reviews for this curse. er. I mean course. it plays very slowly, and when you take 3 putts instead of one or two because the greens are so aweful, then what fun is the round??? When visiting NYC-area courses, you really can't expect much. Prices are generally a little steep for the experience, but hey -- that's NYC. Forest Park is by far my favorite out of the NYC-area courses. The layout is great, a few water holes, and the course has a lot of character. Some holes are flat, some holes with elevation, some holes with bunkers, some are doglegged, some are tight others are wide. All elements of a complete golf course. I just went this past Sunday and it took 5 hours to complete a round with a 12:30 tee time so it wasn't too bad. I was a one person walk-in and he told me as soon as I purchase, "they are waiting for you at the tee box". Sweet! The bev cart girl came to us very quickly. The grill was closed due to the bad weather (very cloudy). My only complaint would be the greens need to be blown as they had leaves/twig debris all over the place. With my bad putting, it really didn't make a difference anyways And it's always a good golf day when you walk out with more balls than you came with. There are balls to be found all over! read more

This is a "Play at Your Own Risk" kind of place. The course design is such that it is made for golf balls to be raining down upon you. Several tees are situated such that even a slightly off shot from the group behind you will be close. I played this course yesterday for the second time and I saw: several golfers chipping off of tees, a tee shot on a par 3 that was a line drive to the next tee box and the golfers shriek FORE!, 5-6 balls land within 15 feet of me or my group. I, personally, was HIT BY A GOLF BALL with no yelling directed my way. I have the welt to prove the strike and the whiteness to back me up that we heard no warning. There is so much chaos of balls going everywhere that hardly anyone yells Fore. It's like everyone just gets tired of yelling it. Furthermore, it was almost $70 for a Saturday fee with cart. That was very expensive seeing three of the tee boxes where no less than raw mud. With the tightness of the course, almost no protection from trees in critical areas, and the quality of the golfers I saw on this course, I recommend to stay away. To preface, I am on the course right now. Currently sitting between the 4th green and 5th tee box. I started my round 2 hours ago!!!!!!! For the price, this is awful. There are no rangers and no course personnel keeping the pace of play. There are 2 somes walking in front of 4somes riding. No organization whatsoever. It's a shame becuse the course itself isn't half bad. I've played better, I've played worse. But I will never again be playing Forest Park and you shouldn't either. Unless you want to spend more than half of your day sitting in your cart, stay away from this place. The staff sucks too. There was 1 guy behind the counter who didn't have a clue as to what was going on. In fact, when I checked in, they didn't even have a cart for me!!! This course sucks, flat out. This course can get very busy which one would expect considering there are not many courses this close to the city on the queens side so all 3 or 4 are usually packed on nice days. Make sure you book your tee time because you will probably not get on in the morning with out a reservation. The greens can vary from very fast to slow depending on the weather but dont usually give much breaks except on a few holes. There are a few very tough holes on this course but all in a ll a very solid and challenging place to play for most golfers read more

Scoff if you must but I just shot a 94, which is a big improvement over my 110 average of last year. Forest park isn't exactly a hard or long course, but the tight lanes and heavy surrounding woods cause the slice-prone shooters like myself have a tough time of it. Mix in my three putt nature and you get the 32 above par I just picked up. Besides, anyone can shoot well on the vast fairways and pristine greens of private clubs, but let's see you sink a thirty foot put over a green that's recently been aerated and has three different bald spots directly in your line. Forest park is a city course, meaning funding is tight, so pointing out the flaws is like whacking a pinata without a blindfold. Just know that, when a place doesn't have the divot replacement bottles on the sides of their carts or a collard shirt enforcement policy, you can pretty much do anything you want while you're out there swinging. Coolers in the cart basket are a common sight (as are nail biting golf cart bumper car chases, many resulting in overturned or runaway vehicles) With ten par threes and eight par fours, this course is a great local spot to work on your irons, and there are still a few holes to open up with the lumber. No water hazards, but a couple tee shots are over valleys to a higher elevation green, and the greens of the back eleven all seem to be protected; too short and you'll be on the beach, too long and you're on safari. . read more

Forest park is a great course and a great place to escape the craziness of the city. The course has plenty of trees, shade, hills, doglegs and other interesting features. You can't see or hear any cars on the course! Don't come here to play nine holes (walking) though as the 9th hole leaves you about as far from the parking lot as you could be. read more

I do not like this course. First I just did not like the design. This is just a my personal taste and there is nothing wrong with it; I just did not liked it. Second, the greens where fast but too inconsistent. It was very difficult to judge the speed since some greens where significantly faster than other, making for a very frustrating round. The staff was very friendly and the ranger was trying to manage the typical crowded conditions of weekend rounds fairly well. read more

Whoever's been greenskeeping at Forest Park Golf Course should be given a raise or an award, something(!), and then locked in the tool shed on the side of the fourth hole so he or she doesn't get away. The conditions on this municipal track, one that I have played since the 1980's, are easily the best they've ever been. I played on 5/21/15, having last played there in 2013, and the improvements were immediately apparent. I expected last winter to have damaged parts of the course, like I had heard about Bethpage. But to my pleasant surprise, the course was in almost perfect condition. Well-maintained tee boxes, lush fairways and smooth, fast greens. Some holes were particularly eye-catching, such as the championship-tough 5th hole. Cordoning off landing areas to motor carts has paid off: fairways are well-defined and encourages accurate shots. Even the perennially sketchy green on the 7th hole, a reachable par 4 with a gaping chasm, was in healthy shape. I was lucky enough to get a walking round in in 4 1/4 hours, but on a weekday with skies threatening rain (Dad always said if you listen to the weatherman you'll never play golf). When crowded, 6 1/2 hour rounds are not unheard of. Ah muni-golf! Like the subway, people go round and round, with frequent and unexplained stops, all the while taking the art of complaining to new heights. This is a tight course, demanding length and accuracy, especially on the front 9. A slicer's nightmare. FPGC has always been a good test and now, wow, it's a verdant treat. A fairly challenging course because it is very narrow on some holes. Basically if you play a slice hope that the trees are in good mood and send you back to the fairway lol. The course itself is kept in decent shape but the tee boxes need some work- especially on the par 3s. The only downfalls to this course are- around the 3rd and 4th hole it will get backed up, especially for us early bird golfers and on some holes, you tee off so close to the greens on opposite holes you end up in the line of fire. read more

I've played this course twice and had the same experience on both occasions. Prepare to waste a ton of time because there are no rangers keeping pace. Last week on hole 4 there were 6 carts lined up waiting. It took my buddy and I 6.5 hrs to play 18 and we both shoot mid 80's. Crazy long round. A wait can be expected on almost every hole - on a weekend that is. The design of the course is tight. Very tight. You might even consider wearing a helmet as the greens and tee boxes are often a few yards from each other. So it's not uncommon to see balls dropping right in front of you while in your back swing. The course is in rough shape. Players don't repair their ball marks or divots and a lot of the tee boxes are lacking attention. No one seems to rake the traps either. The course is way over priced considering all the issues mentioned above. I think my last round was $72. They should either drop the price $10-20 or take better care of the course. The blue tee on hole 3 was a giant dirt patch. However, the course has potential. It's challenging and some holes are quite nice. Maybe a good spot for beginners because of the very casual play. I think some management would go a long way. Maybe a ranger would also help with the unorganized play. If you're a more experienced golfer with any sense of golf etiquette, then perhaps a different course would be more enjoyable. Unfortunately, I think I've played the course for the last time. Do you want to experience as much stress as possible on your wedding? If so this is the place for you. When me and my wife decided to get married at the norman probstein golf course in forest park at first we were very happy. Everything was clicking and coming together. It all went downhill when in the middle they changed our wedding coordinator on us. Our first coordinator Amy was awesome and very accommodating of what we wanted in order to create our dream wedding. However due to the wedding rush we got changed to Liz. This was the worst thing that could have happened. She was very rude the entire time and spoke to me and my wife with an attitude. It wasn't until our rush week that her true colors really stared to show. She attempted to charge us over $1000.00 3 days before the wedding for a pricing mistake she made. Then instead of owning up to the mistake she attempted to blame us for her own miscalculation. Talk about stress and anxiety! We had to call her out and threaten to go over her head to get her to honor the initial price provided. Unfortunately, the problems we had did not end there. During the rehearsal for the wedding despite being informed time and time again that Liz would be there to help us walk through the ceremony timeline Liz was no where to be seen and we were stuck outside with not even the lights left on. This was very disappointing as we as a group were very confused. We do not perform weddings day in and day out. This goes on to the day of the wedding where she was asking me, my wife, and the entire bridal party where people are suppose to be. If she was at the rehearsal as promised she would have known where everyone was suppose to be and how we wanted everyone to walk down. This caused even more stress on my wife which is unnecessary for a bride who has enough to deal with the day of her wedding. Liz had no concern for anything that we wanted only the timeline of events. She was very rude to everyone the entire day. She made promises that were not honored during our big day and was continually disrespectful to myself, my wife, our bridal party, and even our parents to the extent that she went up to the mother of the bride and told her that we were rude because the bridal party was running late taking photo's. While she may do wedding's every weekend we do not and wanted to make sure that we captured our day and did not miss out on any photo opportunities as we only get one shot at a perfect weeding. The list of stressful and immature actions performed by Liz goes on and on. If you want lots of stress and to be spoken to like a child then this is the place for you. I recommend taking your money elsewhere as there are much better places to have your special day that will give you the respect you deserve and help you fulfill your dream wedding. If you do make the horrible decision to get married her stay away from Liz. read more

It's really hard to give any golf course 5 stars. So Forest Park get a 4+. I've been playing there a while. It deserves a kind word. I play golf for fun. Forest Park serves up fun. By my standards, it's pretty well maintained. I've been to fancy courses who could take a lesson from it. The first 3 holes are a nice warm up. The 4th has whoop-di-doos. The 5th is a sharp, narrow dog-leg right with ball hungry trees and a gully on the right. Six is a ninety-nine -yarder with encroaching trees to foil you. Seven is most threatening. Hit over a weed-and-log-infested gully to make to the sharp dog-leg left. Too far straight and you're in the trees. The small green sits atop a 5 ft incline sloping back to the fairway. This one's fun . . . and memorable. Eight's a straight shot down tree lined incline. If you're in the trees, hitting out is no challenge. Nine's a par 3 with muck on the right. Between 8 and 9 is a grill. A bathroom there would be real nice. The woods can't accommodate everyone or everything. Back nine starts with 3 long up and down tree-lined holes. It's all about distance and stamina, (if you're walking, like I do). Thirteen is straight 210 yard par 3 with trees on the right and gully on the left. Fourteen breaks out of the woods onto a wide fairway toward a large green. Crush it kids. Fifteen is a par 3 over Lac Ball-Swallower. If you make it over the water don't veer left to the beach. Next comes the design flaw. From 15 you trek across or ride around 1 & 2 to arrive at 16. It's no fun walking with incoming. Sixteen is a short par 4 straight with west-tilting green. Seventeen is a narrow uphill serpentine to the left lined with trees. Challenging, not impossible. Eighteen is low-hi-low with a hidden green at the end. You guessed it, line with trees. I play Forest Park several times a year and look forward to it. The staff is friendly. Some even remember you. I've yet to play with someone who made the time unpleasant. The crowd has the right attitude. We're not there to prove anything. It's a nice walk through a very pretty park. A big plus for me is it's the course closest to Manhattan. I guess this shows I like the place. If you're out to really enjoy a round of golf, I recommend it. read more

This is my normal local course since it is only a 10 minute drive. I come here for a no frill early 9. Going 18 can be a nightmare with huge waits and backups. The 4th hole can be backed up 45 minutes. The conditions could be better, The greens are definitely bumpy. You can generally get on this course if Douglaston/Clearview are booked solid. read more

Living in Jamaica Forest Park is a short 10 minute ride from my apartment, so I guess I consider it my "home course". The course is adequate and far from exceptional, but definately servicable for the weekend golfer such as myself. With that being said do not book a tee time before 11am on a weekend, you WILL be on the course for at least 6 hours if you do. The par 3's get backed up pretty badly, mainly because of guys taking 3 or 4 tee shots after they shank balls into the trees. The greens are pretty crappy, lots of bumps and irregularities. Tee boxes are inconsistent. Some have well kept grass, others are like teeing off of a cement sidewalk. This could be a great course if the managment paid alittle more attention to the greens and tee boxes, and if they stationed someone at the 3rd hole to keep players moving. read more

This is a ok course.. A different setup than most other courses.. Theres almost like a completely hidden side to all 18 holes where you play through various wooded areas .. Additionally, the back 9 does not start at the club house.. So for you ladies, or whomever that need a bathroom break in between the front and back 9, its important to time out when you will head back to the club house for the restroom. read more

My go-to course since I live here in Queens. When my golf friends come in from out of town, I always try and take them for a round at Forest Park. It's a great course, and for the most part it is well maintained. It's a rather long course too for being so close to NYC. Have fun! read more
