You have to come to the Forest Heritage Center when they have the Folk Festival Arts & Crafts Show…read more It is really one of the better festivals that I have ever attended. I have been coming to Beaver's Bend State Park and to the Forest Heritage Center since I was a child and I noticed that Spike S.'s review discussed the wonderful history and description of the museum so I won't go there. The Folk Festival is going on this weekend and my sister, husband and I went yesterday which was a Friday. I have always gone on Saturday or Sunday in the past but here is a pro-tip. Go on the first day and get there when they open at 9am. The parking is less crowded. When you get to the Forest Heritage Center follow the signs with arrows to the parking area. You will then be directed to a space to park and then you can hop on one of the adorable trams pulled by a tractor or you can hitch a ride in one of the state park vans if you prefer a little more climate control. They will drop you off at the festival and they are constantly picking up folks leaving the festival so you never have to wait. We shopped and observed local artisans preparing their wares. There were people dressed in period costumes throughout. Women were spinning yarn, a man was making wood carvings, and a group was performing traditional folk music on dulcimers and mandolins. There were also Choctaw tribe members making beaded jewelry and demonstrating the game of stickball. The Forest Heritage Center is known for it's support of woodturning artists; so there were many of the woodturners there with the most gorgeous bowls and other turned wood items on display. I believe next year I will buy one of the bowls. Soooooo beautiful. The nearby Oklahoma Historical Society from Fort Towson was there and had numerous prints of old Oklahoma Maps and other historical Oklahoma themed posters for $5 each! Those posters would have made excellent framed art for some of the local cabins or for someone's home. Mountain Fork Brewery had a booth and I bought a nice bottle of the local Stout called Pappy's Buck Snort (love the name and the bottle is gorgeous). I also picked up some delicious Jalapeno Cheddar sourdough bread and a jumbo chocolate sourdough cookie. I also picked up some honey soaked pecans and honey jar containing a honeycomb from Roark Acres and salsa verde from Sixth Day Snacks....as you can see it is all about the food and beverages for me. I hope that you will consider visiting this awesome museum and especially coming to the folk festival in early November. I highly recommend!

Call and make a reservation. We will definitely make a return trip. The only reason that we give this four stars is because we had two separate workers give us two different sets of procedures. My husband and I were totally fine because we (mostly he) are very experienced kayakers. But there were about 30 ppl stacking up just totally bombing down rapids, paddles up because there was absolutely no instruction. There's not really any danger because the water is shallow but they really got in the way for everyone behind them. But very friendly people here, good prices, easy to book, didn't wait long at all for pickup, they just have buses go back and forth constantly. No complaints.

Quick look rating: 5/5 Quality, 5/5 Service, 5/5 Experience…read more For my 100th review of 2015, I thought it would be best to write about a great little trout fly fishing spot that's not to far from Dallas, TX. **To note: This review is written about the creek before the floods in early spring of 2015. In the spring of 2015 we had major rains and flooding in the area. The engineers for the dam had to release a large amount of water from the spillway. Downstream was a major washout. Spillway Creek is below the spillway dam at Broken Bow Lake. It is just a little over 3 hours drive time from Dallas or 20 to 25 minutes from Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The water released from this dam comes from about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down from the top of the water. This keeps the water released cold, cold enough for trout to live for the first couple of miles to about twelve miles worth of stream before it gets to hot for trout. The spillway is stocked with trout nearly every two weeks with at least two trucks of stock trout. The Spillway Creek is on the Ouachita National Forrest and Beavers Bend State Park, and I noticed that they are doing a great job of keeping this park and wildlife area, very well maintained! Help keep this park clean, what you pack/carry in, well then carry out, thank you in advance! At the time of spring there was two nice fly fishing shops in the area, while the Dallas has some really nice fly shops to help you out as well! Some of the Fly shops in Dallas have some guides that will take you up there as well! My thoughts / suggestions: 9ft rod - 4 or 5 weight rod, 9ft leader with a 5x tippet, take 5,6, and 7x tippet spools. Flies: RS2, maybe some tiny midge nymphs. Carry a wading staff! The water can be stiff in some areas! **To note: Check with the local fly shops for what kind of fly's to use and what types of tippet and leaders are being used at that time. **Emergency Note: Always listen for any sirens in the valley / creek area. When they release water from the dam, the engineers will blow that horn/whistle. If you hear it, head to high ground IMMEDIATELY! Please keep in mind where your fellow fly fishing buddies are located! For the most part there is phone reception in the area, but double check. It is pretty good idea to go to text mode when fly fishing and keep it on vibration/silent mode. Be safe, and let others know where you are located! I'll be back!
