I really enjoyed how the owners took their time to get to know me but also have some fun. I didn't feel pressured. I felt at ease and as soon as I felt confident due to their incredible words of wisdom I began to tuft for the first time. My classmates and I were dancing and singing karaoke, but also tapping into side of our creativity that we didn't know about. We got to make 2 items during the 3 hour handbuilding class and it flew by- we could've stayed another hour or so. I saw classes at other studios that only lasted an hour and I'm so glad I went with Sugar Hill Clay. It was $180 for up to a 4-person private class and worth every penny. We were able to book a Saturday class with Chen (who was so talented, knowledgeable and set such a calming presence) and would do it again! After you make your items, Chen will glaze them with your color preference and fire them. Once they're ready, they let you know when you can pick up the pieces! 1000% would recommend- hidden gem!

The upstairs gallery was closed when we were there, so we just browsed the shop, which is full of all sorts of beautiful ceramic items like tiles, vases, art, and more. I liked seeing all the different pieces but nothing really shouted out to me. The animal tiles were probably my favorite. I also liked the house number tiles. They also had other non-ceramic items for sale, like earrings, puzzles, calendars, cards, etc. It is a nice place to find gifts! They also do classes and workshops, which sound fun! This isn't a spot that I need to visit every time I'm in the area, but it was fun to finally check out.

In addition to an active workshop, the building houses a gift shop with lots of wonderful ceramic pieces and a small museum, which details the history of Pewabic Pottery. It's a unique piece of Detroit history and a great place to buy gifts for yourself and others. It's well worth a visit to this hidden gem.

Today was a great visit! The employee was a very arty young girl with fun piercings. She was friendly and definitely took care of me, price wise. I didn't realize that a lot of the things I got were not included in the bag price, my bad. She was so sweet and gave me a great price. Everything was clearly for my classroom. It's a good thing that this place is pretty far from my house and that I try to not be the art teacher who hoards stuff, otherwise this place would be a regular hang it of mine!

You never know what you'll find nor how much you'll need it until you see it. Get it while they got it (No matter how much you think "nobody else is gonna want to buy this") One person's trash is the next person's treasure. Repurposing at its best with a wonderful cause being supported. The employees are great! I love to see the looks on the faces of children the first time they come in, their mouths fall open like mine probably did.
