My story sounds similar to most but I couldn't be happier with my results! Dr. Sklar team performed a bilateral bunionectomy and toe shortening on my feet and toes two weeks apart. After both procedures I walked out without any pain, crutches or issues. Everyone I met (from the receptionist, nurses, doctors, etc) were all very professional and friendly, although Samantha Sklar was my favorite! I had no insurance issues as I was told up front what my insurance covered and what portion I would have to pay depending on my deductible. I would highly recommend Foot First to anyone needing a bunionectomy or any type of toe shortening surgery. 4-22-19 Update: For those that have asked, it's been three years later and I am still happy with my results and the surgery. Two years and 4 months later I have more pain than before the bunion ectomy and hammertoe repair. The staff is very friendly. I believe the focus is to make your toes look attractive, rather than functional. Notice the web page. It's all about taking pictures of toes before and after, not actually about improving your ability to walk or wear shoes My surgery began with a poor recovery. My foot was wrapped too tight so it swelled cutting off fluid to the foot. Before the wrap was even removed they wanted me to assess the success of the surgery! On each subsequent visit I inquired about the need to wear orthotics following surgery. Each time Dr Sam was vague. She would say something like some do and some don't. On my final visit she was accompanied by two interns. At that time I had been wearing gym shoes since the surgery. I wanted to transition to regular shoes. Again I ask her about orthotics. In bold language, I think directed to the interns, she told me that all of their clients must wear orthotics following surgery! Physical therapy was mediocre. The physical therapist was often on her cell phone. After being frustrated numerous times by her late arrival (15-20 minutes), I asked Dr. Sklar to write me a script for another PT provider. She did write a new script. I saw a physical therapist for one year and consulted two other podiatrists. The podiatrists concluded that Dr. Sklar severed a nerve in my long toe. Since surgery that toe is a stick that stands up. It has not changed. Daily I tape it down into a reasonable position. I have numb knot under this toe and it's neighbor. Buying shoes has become an expensive and time consuming task. I wish she would have assessed my foot and how it relates to my ankle and the rest of my leg. It feels the procedure was simply an attempt to make my toes look nice. They clamored about how good my toes looked and took follow up pictures She told me once that once the foot was right everything about it would fall into place correctly. I would not recommend this surgery. Although it looks nicer it is much riskier than the incisions on top of the toes. Perhaps at 65, I was simply too old to have this surgery. I could not return to the gym until one and a half years later. Prior to that I worked out three times a week for 13 years. read more

Would not recommend. I flew out from out of state and for my second surgery with them they completely forgot to do my xrays and have the pre-operation discussion with me. Instead when they were about to bring me into the operating room I had to tell them that they never spoke with me before going in for surgery and did not do my xrays and they were like "oh sorry about that, okay let's get your xrays". I found this to be super unprofessional. Not to mention my toes that they operated do not look good and hurt more than they did before. I regret this surgery unfortunately. Landmark Review: Dr. Sklar and his staff are top notch. Yelp lead me to this clinic for a recent foot problem that developed due to an accident. His staff was quick to get me in and they were able to take xrays in the office. Everyone was super friendly from the receptionist to the MA to the nurse with Dr. Sklar. He was very friendly and did what was necessary to help with the problem. His office is efficient as well getting you in and out on time. I had surgery 7 months ago and then I started having pain in my foot. I went back for X-rays only to see the screws that were placed in the bone were coming out of my foot. The doctor and office informed me then it would cost me over 1,000 to get the faulty screw removed that was placed in my bone! I had no choice then to go back to the office it took less than 5 minutes and 1,000. I will never return and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else! It was outrageous and their mistake! read more

Dr. Sklar performed a bilateral bunionecotmy (both feet) on me in December and I could not be happier with the results. His method is so much further advanced than many other podiatrists or orthos. I walked out of surgery both times (two weeks apart), I barely had to take pain meds, and I was working out on the recumbent bike three weeks after the last surgery. I went to three podiatrists before settling on Dr. Sklar and I feel very confident I made the right decision. Many other doctors can show you one or two before and after pictures; Dr. Sklar has hundreds. His incisions are done on the side of the foot, and people cannot believe how great my feet look. I was in a Facebook group for people dealing with this surgery, as it is intense, and I can say my healing progress in terms of scarring and how quickly I was able to be back to an active city dweller was by far in the top 5% of all of the people in the group. If you are thinking about doing this procedure, do your research and include Dr. Sklar in your opinions. I asked a lot of questions and he patiently explained the answers to each one. I felt listened to and never rushed, even when taking notes in my iPhone. Also, I'm surprised at other reviews regarding insurance. After I received incorrect information from my insurance company, I asked at my pre-op visit. Dr. Sklar's insurance coordinator specifically called and got comparisons for my out of pocket costs if I had the surgeries in that calendar year, or waiting until January as I had been advised. She saved me thousands of dollars, and they worked with me to reschedule two surgeries before year end to make sure that I didn't have to pay more. That's a level of service I'm not used to in healthcare anymore. I am happy to refer friends and family to their offices downtown or in the suburbs. read more

Wow I cannot stress enough- this is THE place. First and foremost, I'm not even 5 days post operation and I cannot explain the gratitude I have for Dr. Sam and her father. I have been having issues with bunions for about 13 years- and this was the year I decided to take the surgery; I have known I needed surgery since I was 12 years old. I was referred by a friend at work to check out Foot First and I cannot thank him enough. Both Dr. Sam and her father take the utmost care for their patients and are constantly striving to find the best way to treat bunions and all other various foot conditions. The appointments were always on time and informative (both at the chicago office and the surgical center in Schaumburg.) The staff is extremely helpful and make sure all of your insurance is taken care of weeks before your operation. They also are very friendly and ease any nerves. Surgery day 3/23/17, went smoother than I could have imagined. My anesthesiologist was extremely patient with answering questions, and Dr. Sam and her father were both helpful and calming before I was out. You could tell they knew what they were doing- and that eased my mind immensely. I woke up to a BEAUTIFULLY straight foot. I was completely amazed at their work- and it was executed phenomenally (will post pictures and an update as my recovery progresses). I was texted and called the next few days to make sure everything was going well. Dr. Sam was very attentive and helpful when any problem arose and was willing to go the extra mile each time to ensure my recovery was as pain free as possible. Could not say enough about this place. I have suffered for years with a bunion that was arthritic with a bone spur. It was to the point I had a hard time walking. With so many doctors out there who claim to know what they are doing only to leave you with worse problems than you have had before. It is scary leap of faith you must do when you put your body into a doctors hands hoping that they can better your problems instead of making them worse. I can say that this doctor is legit. I went to go see Dr. Samantha Sklar after listening to a radio commercial. I was very skeptical regarding the bunion surgery. I heard horror story and certainly did not want to be one of them. After speaking with Dr. Samantha Sklar, I felt very comfortable and at peace with my decision to continue with the procedures. I had bunion surgery on my right foot the middle of April at the Oak Brook location. A month later, I had surgery at the Schaumburg location for my left foot. Having my surgery done at the Schaumburg location was much much MUCH easier. You get there, the nurses take you to the back part of the building, they sit you in a chair and start doing the work. You wake up, the nurses walk you to the lobby where you meet your ride and walk right to your car. You don't need to change your clothing or any of those shenanigans. Simple, fast and easy. Oak Brook on the other hand, makes you come earlier, can't have your nails painted, make you wear a hospital gown, shoes and hair net. The surgery is performed in a huge room that is cold as heck and supper scary. They keep you there for an hour after you wake up and send and outrageous bill to your insurance company. My suggestion is to opt for the Schaumburg location, much much easier and all of the staff is super friendly. My surgeries where no where near as painful as I expected. I walked to the car on both instances. For the next 3 days, after my surgery, I watched Netflix and stayed in bed, icing and elevating my foot. I returned to work on the 4th day both times. The healing process was much simpler than what I expected. I noticed my progression everyday. Now that my right foot is healed, my scar is not visible nor noticeable. You don't have to worry about having a huge ugly scar. Both of my surgeries where performed by Dr. Keith Sklar and Dr. Samantha Sklar. They are both amazing at what they do. I have been in "bunion" pain and had hammer toes for as long as I can remember. Lets say at least the past 15 years. I went to see Sam Sklar in the Oak Brook office on a Monday and the next Monday in Schaumburg I had surgery. I had bunion surgery and shortening of my hammertoes. Once I made the decision to see the doctor, saw what they could do I wanted it as soon as possible. At the first visit I gave them my insurance info and by the pre-op visit I was informed exactly what my insurance would cover, what they were going to do and how I would walk out on my own foot with no help. All went EXACTLY as expected. I had pretty major surgery on my foot and I was in pain for the first 3-4 days, it was very bearable, I had pain in the toe area at one point and they adjusted the bandage and it was uphill from then on. I went in a few times a week as directed and each time I went it got remarkably better, so much so that three weeks later I opted to dive in to the other foot. It all went exactly like the first one. No surprises. IF I only had my bunions done I would have been without any discomfort at all in about three weeks.I was back to work 4 days after surgery. Because of the toes, it was a little longer discomfort only in toe area - not really pain. I also had therapy for a couple weeks. I don't have enough words to express how grateful I am for the entire staff at Foot First. As an out-of-town patient, I was extremely nervous, but everyone was so kind and answered all of my questions via phone and email. Everything, including my virtual consultation, surgery days, and post-op appointments, went so smoothly. During recovery, Dr. Keith Sklar even texted me to check in to see how I was doing, and recovery was just like he said it would be. I was sent home with plenty of gauze, wrap, and cream, as well as detailed instructions on how to take care of my healing feet. I walked right out of surgery with a surgical shoe and a brace! I look at my new, beautiful feet every day and can't believe that they are mine! They not only look great, but they also feel great! I have no pain for the first time in my life. Doctor Sklar totally destroyed my right foot. I would have been better off never having surgery! He fused my big toe to where now I have the knuckle bone sticking up and a bone spur suddenly appeared where my big toe meets my foot. But of course he blamed this all on my foot. Know the fees upfront is all I can say. What a joke, I went in for a bunion consultation and they did x-rays on both of my feet to see if I in fact did have bunions that required surgery. I get a bill for $300.00. I called the office and the girl said consultations and x-rays are always $300.00. I am fine with paying for x-rays (62.19) each but to charge $125.00 for a consultation is ridiculous!!! Needless to say I am not going to have any surgery done by Foot First Podiatry. read more

Where do I start??? I have suffered from gout for several years and this past summer the pain became unbearable. I saw a different podiatrist in the Schaumburg area who told me I also suffered from bunions. This was new news to me; I didn't even know what a bunion really was. When I asked what could be done to resolve my problem, he told me that surgery was the only option. He stated that I would be in a cast and on crutches for 6 weeks!!! As a physical education teacher, this was not an option. I also consider myself very active and I did not want to be out of commission for so long. I decided to go for a second opinion and after doing extensive research, I decided to visit Dr. Sklar at Foot First. The diagnosis was confirmed as a bunion but the recovery was very different. Dr. Sklar told me that I would walk out of surgery with a surgical shoe and that in two weeks, I would be back in a gym shoe! I also told Dr. Sklar that I wanted to be active and running as soon as possible. Well, after 8 weeks, I was back to running two miles continuously! At 12 weeks I went back to remove my screws. Today, I went to have my two stiches from the screw removal procedure taken out. I am officially good to go and have scheduled my other foot in December without any hesitation! What I have enjoyed the most about working with Foot First is that everyone there is a real person. They are not pretentious and show a genuine concern for their patients. I had my bunion surgery a little over a year ago. This involved cutting the big toe bone in two places and screwing the toe back together. When I was already under anesthetic, I was told that they were also going to cut the tendon on top of my second toe. The recovery was very long. I had my surgery in Sept. I was off my feet until December. Even then I had quite a bit of pain. Now it is one year and some weeks later. The toe is in so much pain that I can hardly walk. The second toe where they cut the tendon is a so screwed up I can hardly put on a shoe. My right foot is also a mess, but I would never consider going back to Foot First. All I can say is there quacks are really lucky I don't settle my problems by law suits. If I could have given them 0 stars I would have. DON'T GO. BAD DOCTORS. read more

This is a father and daughter practice. I went to their location on Michigan Avenue because of a bone problem on my left foot. The doctor gave me a cortisone injection, that was exceptionally painful. She said I had to have 2 - 3 more, 1 each week. I told her i didn't think I could take the pain. At my next appointment, I asked if there was something else we could do, that I would not take another injection. She stated they could make orthotics but did not mention it at my first appointment because she did not think my insurance would cover it. In fact it did and even if it did not, I would have gone that route. She sent an amateur "technician" in to make the imprints for the orthotics. I thought at the time she didn't know what she was doing, but, had no evidence to base it on. The orthotics worked for about a month. Then the pain came back. I went back and asked about making another pair. The doctor told me I could have full length orthotics - something she failed to mention the first time! I agreed and they made another pair - covered under my insurance. The second technician was much better than the first and the foot impression was much deeper. This immediately confirmed what i had suspected, that the first technician did a horrible job. Two of my toe nails were infected and the father, Keith, offered to pinpointe laser treat them for $1,000 and the father said he did not think it would be covered under insurance. i said I thought it would be, that I had an excellent Blue Cross Blue Shield policy that covered the orthotics. He said okay and they could try. I signed a form without reading it and it was a charge for $1,000. They never attempted to charge my insurance company. It took about 3 minutes of laser to do my toes! I received the $1,000 bill from Foot First. I called and they said I owe them $1,000. I told them i would never have had this treatment done without shopping around. After hanging up, I went on line and found the largest pinpointe laser foot center in the US, Laser Now Therapy Clinics. They had a special for $390 for my foot, including the doctor appointment. I also found a center called Chicago Podiatry that does pinpointe laser for $150 per foot, not including the doctor appointment. STAY AWAY FROM FOOT FIRST PODIATRY!! Find better doctors! read more

Dr. Sklar was very gentle on my mending toe. Even the cortisone shot he administered didn't hurt. He asked if I had any other concerns and was very patient answering all my questions. I was told at the time of my surgery that he didn't want to do the outside bunions since they would correct themselves. This did not happen. Now I need to go through surgery all over again. I also found out that while it was convenient that I could walk so soon after surgery, it is not saw. My new podiatrist told me that he can tell his patients the same thing, but he doesn't want to because they need that time to properly heal.
