Great experience as Dr. Berger replaced my mother's knees. She did very well and recovered beautifully!!!

Beware! My total knee replacement was Nov 2024. 3 months later I am still dealing with twice a day dressing changes for a wound dehiscence. For context...I'm in my 60s, active, healthy BMI, taking NO medications, no health issues. 2 wks postop I reached out to Dr Berger's staff regarding my concerns about the incision, was told that it was normal to have drainage etc and that Dr Berger would see me at the 3 wk post op visit as scheduled. The initial post op visit was week #3. I was prescribed antibiotics for a wound infection and told to do wet to dry dressing changes twice a day in order to debride the wound. I voiced my concern about removing the scabbed tissue and exposing the prosthesis underneath , difficulty with PT due to the wound scabbing and pulling from the edges with every PT session , the discomfort with the wound and was essentially dismissed. I was seen again weekly for 3 wks, each visit lasting 5 mins max. and received the same instructions..." wet to dry twice a day" and he was out the door. Not one of Dr Berger's 21 staff members reached out to check my progress/decline or offer support. I called several times and was told to continue/increase pain medication intake and push thru P.T. Luckily I have a family member who is the medical director for Orthopedics at Northwestern and I personally spent several yrs working for a plastic surgeon. I've also had to engage with dermatology and wound clinic in order to help manage the wound. I'm so grateful for the assistance of these other physicians to help me navigate this postoperative mess and prevent a prosthesis infection. Dr Berger does NOT close his surgical sites but this should not preclude him from managing the postoperative care if complications arise. I question the complication rate that Dr Berger's states on his marketing info. read more

I have never received this type of care. They are always available for any questions. You never feel like you are alone in this experience. You are treated like you are their top Priority. The surgery went exactly as they informed you that it would go. They are still available weeks after surgery at any time day or night. Can't express what a great experience thus far. read more

So. I will say we are having a huge problem..I cannot imagine the amount of patients in dire need of help being turned away for help by this Dr. liason service or secretaries.. First of all I have been hitting walls.. every where where you are declined over the phone for a consultation in person if you don't want to use or have insurance for the visit but pay cash price instead.... So this was a issue with this one..so we got past that and she understood my point that I just am Coming for opinion..consultation..even though I did plan on using him because he was a referral from a patient I know and see how well she is doing...so I knew based on her activity level..it sort of put to rest some of my fears of severe limitations.. So any ways..she said well the Dr. Usually only deals with patients that are about ready to do the sergery. So I explain to her that my situation is pretty different and I cannot schedule one immediately because of lifestyle and obligations...I am am in 4 contracts as a I do remodels..thats a year + out..and I have weight issues that I am thinking I need to deal with.. So she said oh since you mention the weight what is your bmi do u know?..the Dr. Only takes patients that are 35 bmi or less..I said well that what I am saying..I think I am about 40...so I gave her my height and weight..said I was 270..5'9" she said yes that is too high..but I can give them a call back when I get to 235 or below.. So I said wait..I am just trying to get to talk to him..see if he would give me a plan and connections to put me on a program to ready me for surgery with him.. So she said he has somebody he trained and a colleague that will take clients for consultations..opinions that are 40 bmi and up.. I said well I just wanted to talk to him specifically since I was referred because I am in desperate need for help and the last Dr. I saw just said you need a a double replacement come see me when you are ready and tossed me out with no plan..no refferals... I was looking for... Options. Types...resurface or full immediate or near immediate or if alternate therapy to extend out and prepare is really a optio. replacement in both at the same time needed or one and then the other since both are very bad....and actual recovery time.. Ideal weight.. Weight lost therapist referral and options Pre therapry..type and why.. Intermediary pain management referral to allow me to function and have a quality of life and able to actively loose weight in preparation due to decreased pain through pain management..injections..etc.. Because of very decreased pain I am able to have mobility that would allow me to be more efficient..complete stated projects..make arrangements...loose weight etc All this while I get follow ups from the Dr or a staff to confirm a predetermined timeline is still on track..and things are going great.. All inclusive program one collective or referral base.. So then I cannot tell you how destroyed and pretty bad the profession have become.. How cold the Dr's and their staff have become.. It's now all about the money..only about the money.. That lady hung up with almost a attitude because I expressed my need for help.. I have been getting this with pain management centers..new Dr. For general care I went to see to help and become my primary and in disgust on how I have been treated I just never went back..they never answer my concern...they just took information and tbe money.. So if you are a unaware patient and just go in as a blank slate with the attitude as you are the doc i do as u say..you are the perfect client for them..they can make tons of money off you..but if you are educated..have a process..have some back ground..have a specific direction..you are not going to get help as it's proven to me .. This lady pretty much found a way to disqualify me from even stepping into the office because i did not want to use or didn't have insurance but wanted to pay cash instead.. She said I was too fat pretty much..come back when you are 235lbs or less 35bmi or less..thanks..ok good luck! She said.. read more

Dr Berger is an amazing surgeon. I had my left knee replaced and just 4 weeks later I was hiking in the Smokey mountains. It went so well that I decided to replace the right knee after 7 weeks. I am so glad I did. It's 4 weeks into the second knee and I am working on strength training in physical therapy. Overall I have never had this level of care elsewhere. He has an extensive staff that takes care of you both pre- and post-surgery. Medications are preordered, you get checklists and reminders 3 weeks before and for 3 weeks after the procedure along with convenient links to email staff which is answered within hours of concerns. This amazing day surgery had me up and walking within an hour of surgery. Physical therapy was prearranged to begin the next day in my home. The pain was well managed so I could rehabilitate. My right hip was degenerating, I was having injections in the hip to ease the pain. We were caring for my 103 year old mother and l wasn't considering surgery. My husband insisted that l see Dr. Berger, after the initial visit, physical exam My surgery was scheduled at that meeting. Our communication regarding the pre/post surgery expectations began. I had total right hip replacement, June 5,2024 and again had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Berger and his fantastic staff again. Surgery went Awesome, and the Check In with the Get Well app,and Berger Bible answered all questions. The care provided by the Team empowered me and l felt more than a patient. Hip Arthroplasty and Leg Length Discrepancy A couple of months after my first hip surgery I started noticing the other hip hurting on the outside (not groin area). This was most likely due to the new hip not being the same length as the other. Once the second hip was replaced it became increasingly apparent that my gait was off. Leg Length Discrepancy, LLD is common with hip surgery. I was unaware of LLD and it has caused a number is issues I did not have before, herniated disc, sciatica and uneven gait. There is nothing I can do at this point except pass this information on. read more

After 10 years of dealing with my knees I realized that it was time for total knee replacements. During the 10 years I had cortisone shots, gel injections, and lost 40 lbs.--reaching my baseline for knee assessment. I met with 4 orthopedic surgeons before meeting Dr. Berger and researched the latest techniques in TKR. Deciding on minimally invasive TKR, I researched the outstanding orthopedists with this technique. I learned of Dr. Berger's education ( includes a Master's from MIT in mechanical engineering), personal research in the development of this technique ( 2 years working on cadavers), and in design of the implant (one for females, one for men). I also liked that he chose titanium for the implant since my blood test showed a slight allergy to metal ( check-out, www.orthopedicanalysis.com). I flew to Chicago for a consultation with Dr. Berger. Dr. Berger and his support team are impressive--runs in a timely manner, professional, while being pleasant and kind. After meeting with Dr. Berger I had no doubt about having a TKR surgery with him. I had my TKR on 1/9/24. I stayed at Trump Tower, that gives Dr. Berger's patients a reduced rate. The hotel is very hospitable and provides transportation to the HOSP. I chose Rush HOSP for the location of surgery. The whole process was painless. I was expecting pain with an epidural but was "out" before the injection. When I awoke in post-op, again I didn't feel pain but did feel like I needed to start walking to feel better. I had Physical Therapy in the hotel room for 2 days before flying home 48hrs after surgery, using a cane but could walk without it. My next TKR will be at the end of this month. I look forward to it since it will improve the quality of my life. Prior to the TKR I couldn't walk a long distance or stand for a long time. Now, after TKR on one knee, I can walk and stand without pain on that knee. What a joy! I am grateful for the opportunity to have Dr. Berger as my surgeon. His patients come from around the world. I had both knees replaced November 2016 and January 2017 (six weeks apart) on Tuesdays. Out patient surgery and back to work that Friday for both. Unbelievable! Please research doctors because they are not doing what Dr Berger is doing. I have talked to dozens of people that have had replacements done by other surgeons and they are off work for 4-6 weeks and still dealing with pain. Some are horror stories. From conversations with these people I am convinced that this practice's procedure, rehab requirements, and pain management the following 30 days is unique and very effective. Yes Dr Berger is not the best at bed side manner but his staff makes up for that. They are awesome. When I go to a restaurant, I don't go for the chef's personality, I go for the excellent food. This review being written 2 years post surgery. I interviewed 4 ortho surgeons as I explored my options for a full knee replacement. I found all four surgeons a bit dry but heh, I was looking for a surgeon that would make me confident of success and not a new friend. I think when you are looking at something as serious and life changing as a major surgery it's okay to be very very good at doing the surgery and most of the time you spend with them you are asleep anyway. Dr. Berger's staff puts him over the top. They, all of they, are excellent. Friendly, knowledgeable and ready to answer questions (and you come up with questions you could not imagine prior to surgery) and not difficult to get a hold of. Really, if you are looking at a big surgery, take the support staff into consideration too. In the end I added up his reputation and his staff and one additional fact. He did both of former President Bushes' knees. Any President (like them or not) has the ability to have the best when it comes to surgery and a staff to find out who that is. So, 2 years later and my pain has been gone for 2 years... minus recuperation and physical therapy time. If I sit a long time it takes about 20 steps for all the things that attach to the knee to stretch out but that's nothing when you remember the pain is gone. If I had to get the other knee done, I'd go back to Dr. Berger. Located at Midwest Ortho, across from Rush Hospital... Check your insurance against those he accepts. read more

I had my knee replacement 9 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier! I was told by other doctors that I might need a second knee replacement in the future or that my bakers cyst might come back. However, Dr. Berger assured me I would not need a second knee replacement and that we would only repair the pieces that wear out. And, if the bakers cyst does come back, it will not be nearly as bad. So far it has not come back at all! I was very reluctant to have this surgery and waited many years. Dr. Berger changed my mind in one very short appointment. I could see that he was very confident that the surgery would raise the quality of my life and I can tell already after this short of time, that is exactly what is going to happen. This man walks on water. He did a hip and knee replacement on my husband within 6 weeks. Dr. Berger has perfected a "minimally invasive" joint replacement that is amazing. My husband walked out to the car the afternoon of each replacement surgery. He had both surgeries outpatient. They did physical rehab on him before he left and he started physical therapy at home the next day. He had lots of swelling and bruising, but he healed so much faster than other people who had the traditional replacements done. He's a genius. Dr. Berger does surgeries at Rush in Chicago....and he's sooooo worth the trip!! read more

I am one week post surgery today. I walked out of the hospital with no pain only to return home with my partner and his uncle. Dinner was prepared and we ate and drank a nice bottle Pino Grigio. I have been pain free from day one. Very little to no swelling. Matter of fact I took the CTA bus to the post office on yesterday. The home therapist is surprised at my recovery. However, when she viewed the records and noticed Dr. Berger was my surgeon she stated that his patients have the best recovery. I am looking forward to riding my bike after two full weeks of therapy. A little about myself first, I conduct research/analysis for my employer and about 24 months ago received feedback from several Drs. that I needed a total knee replacement. I attempted non-surgical paths to no avail. So I began the task of interviewing several physicians, physical therapists, patients and spoke to several firms that manufacture the actual implants, about knee replacement surgery. What I learned is that today, Dr. Berger and the Dream Team he has assembled, is the best surgical option for you. The conversations with the physical therapists let me know that his patients recovered faster with more rapid progression through physical therapy and a reduced down time at work and home. Additionally, the patients I spoke to in South Florida were very happy with their outcome. Making the decision to have this major surgery was not easy for me, however every facet of the process that I saw or did not see provided a seamless experience that made the trip from South Florida to Chicago a great one that validated my decision. The learning class conducted prior to my surgery delivered the important information I needed to have a great outcome. My list of criteria for a physician did include "bedside manner", albeit low on my list. FYI, Dr. Berger's "bedside manner" exceeded my expectations, but having a successful surgery with the least interruption of my life was at the top of my list. I realize that every patient's recovery is different. That said, I never needed any mechanical or human assistance to walk the day of surgery or after. My swelling was minimal and my friends and co-workers that have a friend or relative that has had knee replacement surgery are amazed at my status when compared to their loved one at the same point of time. Dr Berger and his staff are unbelievable. My surgery was at 7:15 am and I walked out of the hospital at noon that day. He really doesn't need my endorsement or recommendation, he's got people lined up for his procedure. Not the warmest and fuzziest guy in the world but I couldn't care less about that. My right hip is starting to go and I will again go to Dr.Berger. This is my response to Richard Berger's staff comment and completely disagree. My issue is not with his staff, they were very responsive when I called or emailed. My issue is with Richard Berger whose bedside manner minimized a serious problem. I had to have my knee removed for several months, was in a rehab center for 5 months, and was on a PICC line multiple times. While in rehab I met other's who had bad experiences with Dr. Berger and had the same complaints with how they were treated by him. He treats problems with a dismissive attitude, has no empathy for the patient, and wants to do piece meal surgery rather than admitting there needs to be a more aggressive response. As far as his 1% infection rate, I question that statistic as a reality. read more

Dr. Bergers support staff are definitely 5 star worthy. As for Doctor Berger he definitely lacks a glowing bedside manner which is ok...especially if your surgery goes as planned. Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience. Three years post surgery I still halve pain carrying more than 5 pounds and walking stairs. I was hoping to be able to do the thingS I love like hiking, and bike riding pain free! So not the case! FYI I am 66 and not over weight so those aren't factors. Dr B said I would be happy...it didn't happen plus I became eligible for Medicare and since he doesn't take Medicare payment I had to switch doctors after a year. Not the best experic! read more

I cannot express how AWESOME Dr. Berger and his staff is! I had my knee replace at the end of April 2014. I loved that I could walk immediately after surgery unassisted. In August of 2014, I competed in the North Shore Triathlon, absolutely elated that I could swim, bike and run without pain, just 4 months post op! It is now almost 9 months after surgery and I could not be happier about my results. Dr. Berger has literally given me my life back! I have been swimming, biking, running, golfing, bowling, dancing, and enjoying life to the fullest! Before my knee replacement, I couldn't do any of those things nor could I sleep through the night because of the constant pain. I was grumpy all the time. My relationships with my husband, family, and friends suffered...all because I was in so much pain. The pain is completely GONE!!!! I am happy. Life is good again! read more

I had my hip surgery 6 months ago and it honestly was the best thing I did. This time last year I could barely walk and was in a lot of pain, since my hip surgery I have been on 2 yoga retreats, have more flexability then I have had in 10 years and can wear my high heels again!. He is a nice, funny brisk man, but do not expect a lot of personal Doctor one on one time ( he is a surgeon not a family doctor). Do see him if you want a kind, professional team guiding you through every aspect of the procedure and a skilled surgeon with great results. read more

I can't imagine anyone who has had surgery with Dr. Berger giving any rating other than 5 star. I walked out of the hospital 4 hours after total knee replacement surgery, never used a cane, etc., was extremely well-prepared for pain management (and it was manageable), and recovered more quickly than anyone else I know who has undergone this surgery. Staff is responsive, knowledgeable and professional. A friend recently told me that if I ever needed knee replacement, she would help me recover. She was shocked to hear that this was what I had done six months before. We played golf 4 weeks after surgery and she thought I must have had something minor done. Dr. Berger is amazing. read more

I'm 3 months out after my 2nd knee replacement, feel great! I'm recuperating in Florida for winter so I'm outside everyday riding my bike and walking around 4 miles a day. It's only been one week since I had total knee replacement surgery with Dr. Berger but I feel as though I should give him credit. One week from surgery and I have had NO pain at all. I have talked with many friends and co-workers who had knee replacement surgery and all they talk about is the pain. I have had NO pain. My operation was at noon, 5/15/14 and I was home that day by 6:30pm. The staff in his office they are all 1st class, follow up phone calls, explaining things and just giving you the time of day to ask all you want. If you are looking for a Doctor for knee or hip replacement surgery this is the office to start with. read more

I had my left knee full replacement on Feb 26, I stayed overnight because of being diabetic. I went home the next day. This was followed up with 2 weeks of in home therapy and then outpatient therapy for roughly 4 weeks. On April 15 I had my right knee total replacement. Again overnight and then home. Same schedule as the first knee. I am currently 2 weeks into my outpatient therapy. I thought that my first knee went quite well. I was walking without assistance (cane) within 5 days of surgury. No pain meds. Stiffness, but otherwise really quite good. My second knee replacement was even better. I am still feeling some stiffness in my first knee but according to my therapist everyone heals at a different rate and that it could last up to a year to a certain degree.But as far as the surgury is concerned. Dr Berger is the best. His bedside manner may be a bit lacking, but his staff totally make up for it. I personally could care less about his bedside manner ( I did not see him until my follow up ). But that is not what drew me to see Dr. Berger in the first place. His reputation and skill were. I would recommend him and have, to anyone who asks about my experience. I was totally impressed with the facilities, the procedure, the hospital staff, and to Dr. Bergers rockstar staff. read more

Dr. Berger is a miracle worker with knee replacements! I was up walking in a few hours with a cane only. I went to physical therapy (PT) within less than 24 hours post-surgery with a cane only. Upon returning home from PT, I ditched the cane. I was back to working from home in 2 weeks post-op with zero complications (other than a few medication side effects). I went home the same day. If you are looking for lots of hand-holding and bedside manner, talk with his staff and nurses. His nurses are awesome! If you want the best surgeon available to do your knee replacement who may not spend a ton of time with you...that is Dr. Berger. Keep in mind, you are paying for his technical expertise and not his bedside manner. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr. Berger!! read more

I went yesterday for a consultation on total replacement for my knee. I was recommended to see him because he is so good. I left there so pissed off! The waiting room is decorated nice and has plenty of seating. However, since it is so big I felt like I was sitting in an ER waiting room. The only magazine that they had out was Basketbull, and about 50 of them! Not a single other magazine around. I had to wait just over an hour to be seen, and when I was seen it was just for Xrays not even to see the doctor. When they finally called me to go back to a room some other doctor came in, asked me questions, looked at my X-rays, moved my leg around, and felt all around my knee. He left and came back with Dr. Berger. After now waiting for well over an hour I saw Dr. Berger for less than 10 minutes!!!! He walks in, shakes my hand and my husband's hand, and asks, "What can I do for you today?" Um..hello, he's the doctor in this practice. Is he that stupid???? He looks at the X-ray and points things out to the other guy that was in the first time. NEVER showed us or explained anything to us! NEVER looked personally at me knee! I was sitting on the "bed", my husband in a chair, and the doctor on his rolling stool close to me. I asked some questions and he always replied to them looking at my husband and never to me. Then in comes his nurse/scheduling person. Was not happy with her either! They are very pushy, don't let you get a word in, and have you scheduling your appointment for surgery on the spot. Dr. Berger is very arrogant! One of my questions was, "If you leave the same day of surgery what happens if you have some kind of complication from the surgery the next day?" His reply, "That's the same thing if you have surgery, go home 5 days later and then on the 6th day have a problem." What an ass! I scheduled my surgery appointment because I really didn't have a choice, but I am for sure calling them to cancel it! I will never go back there again and I will never refer anyone there! I left there feeling like a number and not a patient. There was no warmth or empathy from anyone. read more

Apparently, he hand picks his patients and throws the rest to his rookie colleagues which is not something that he advertises to the media. I had my full knee replacement surgery with Dr. Berger May 13. I am doing fantastic. Some reviews talk about the Drs bedside manor, he is the surgeon & does his part and his well orchestrated staff handle the rest. They are there for every pain and question you might have. I have delt with many medical situations with my parents and nothing was ever like this. He may be a genesis but I would never recommend him to anyone! I went to his website to investigate his procedure for the less evasive approach and a quicker recovery as I can not afford to take off of work for an extensive period of time where it clearly STILL states that weight is not an issue for the procedure. Went for my consult in July that I waited 2 months for - He required I lose 50 lbs to have the surgery. Mid way through my loss I schedule another appointment to set up the surgery. At that appointment he refused to schedule the surgery until all the 50 lbs was off. Hit my goal & I called to arrange another appointment & now they refuse to move forward because they want additional weight off. ??? If he is so busy & elects not to operate on an overweight patient then first CHANGE your website and not offer false hope. Meanwhile I have lived with the pain in my knee for the last 6 months and could have explored other alternatives. What a coward! The response of "he feels it's to my best interest not to perform the surgery" is crock of shit - He's busy & so he can be selective and obliviously has a prejudiced against those who are overweight. People far heavier than I have had knee replacements. He may have talent when it come to replacement surgery but has no class, empathy or patient etiquette. Dr. Berger and his nurses and the facilicity and everything in orthopedics center is awesome .. Unfortunately .. I had to suffer before form my right knee...this pain was going on for over ten years .. I never thought or had the courage to think about any partial or total knee replacement. But God is Great and helps whoever asks for help.. He showed me Dr. Berger thru a coworker .. My co-worker said" you will wait some time to get your first appointment.. I did wait with severe pain...bone on bone that what was showing on my fresh X-Ray ...I did it and I am the very very happy...excellent in every single step towards full recoverers .. I was up walking in two weeks as I was promised. Back to work on light duty after 6 weeks .. Why light duty because I have a sensitive beautiful job and I have to alert and my pain medication would have to stay with me to finish the physical therapy... All good.. Good is not enough.. I've never had worse follow up care in my life. After getting the Mersa virus at Rush during the stay, I had to go to another hospital to have it taken care of the day after surgery. Dr. Berger and his incredible staff have a comprehensive system . You will know what to expect every step of the way. There is a "class" that explains in detail and any questions are answered. You will be given a cd to watch to enable you with tips on how to even get out of the shower! Best of all you WILL be able to walk around the nurses station and up a flight of stairs and head for home 3 hours or so after surgery! Could not believe it, but my husband did!!! read more

I had my first visit pre op for my total hip. I had read the reviews and was a bit scared anticipating his disposition. The opposite was true he was genuinely caring and took his time talking to me and my family. I was in shock at the level of accommodation we were giving in picking a surgery date as we live 4 hours away. Yes the wait is long and don't expect to be on time. It is a very efficient operation. Well worth the travel time and wait as a small trade off for a quick recovery approach that our home town community doesn't offer . read more
