You can get anything you need at FoodMaxx in terms of basic produce at excellent value. FoodMaxx beats Safeway any day in terms of prices, food in stock, and staffing. Controversial but that's what I've seen. FoodMaxx even has the same brands as Safeway, but significantly cheaper and same quality. Of course, there are only select options for some of these brands but when you can find the right brands, the deals are great. Other reviews keep bashing on the customer service and cleanliness of the facilities but honestly if you know the neighborhood and shop here regularly, the other things are non-issues. Staff are friendly and I prefer FoodMaxx here over the Grocery Outlet nearby.

Came into grab my daughter a few items. She needed some apple juice, blush and a few snacks. I must say this store was so clean. Employee walking around cleaning made me feel very safe. Social distance in place. Tons of cashiers getting everyone in and out quickly. The cashier I had around 6:30-7:40pm 2.23.2021. She had the warmest smile. She greeted me and everyone so kindly. She and I made small chat as she quickly rang me up. She moved very quickly. Which is good with this Covid19 scare. All I'm all very nice shopping experience.

"Ghetto Superstar that is what you are" --Ghetto Superstar song by Pras of the Fugees, Mya, & the late great Ol' Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan Some reviewers on here have described Food Maxx as "ghetto" & frankly weary suburbanites might be best to go elsewhere yet if you are game & a car-free East Bay living person like me give them a try as a little diversity is good for you. Kudos for being a short walk from Fruitvale BART in East Oakland. They are open early & close late. Prices are affordable & staff is friendly. Lines however will likely be long & I have always ended up at the express self-checkout line that is long as well. Patience is an important virtue. I usually only get a few items here yet feel they are solid & affordable for these few items being the East Bay vegan that I am as I stock up on limes or lemons (good deal), bananas, Dave's Killer Bread (love this as lived in OR where company is from), tofu, & an eclectic range of Non-Dairy Milks (including Silk Soy milk as lived in CO where this is from). In need of speciality natural food items, go onward a short walk over the Park St bridge to Alameda for Alameda Natural Grocery or Nob Hill Foods...otherwise Food Maxx got you covered for the essentials in East Oakland!

    A shit show.

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Like the other reviews state, avoid this place at all costs. It keeps getting worse and worse every time we come. Probably will not return again. For starters, people don't know how to park. There are no baskets available. An ungodly amount of people w/ their masks off peruse he aisles, and employees never say anything to them. Then we have the beakers- the COVIdiots - generally grown men- whose masks on are not on correctly, under their noses. We finally make it to the end of our horrendous experiences and ONE checkout line open. ONE. With a line to the back of the store down the alcohol aisle. Awful everything.

I went into the store after a long day to grab strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and bananas, only to be faced with a terribly long wait because there were only 2 check stands open. At this time, self checkout was closed and a 10-15 items or less line doesn't exist, we're talking about Foodmaxx here. I decided it was ridiculous to only have 2 lanes open when there are two lines wrapped around the store. For real! I looked around saw 3 employees congregating, laughing, and having big fun, so I politely walked over and asked for the manager, all while stating that the lines were absurdly long and that they should have additional checkers working. One lady said, "I'm the manager, and I'm on my break. I've been working for 5 hours and the law requires us to take a break after 5 hours. None of that is up for debate, I get it, but you are doing the most and making yourself and the store you're supposed to be representing look extra bad. First of all, GIRL, PLEASE!! That's whack! If you're a manager, get the lines down, call some shots to make sure your store is running smoothly. Secondly, take your conversation to the back and stop looking ghetto and unprofessional standing in the front of the store, sitting on a disabled scooter, talking loud, and being unprofessional in your uniform, while your customers are clearly annoyed as they wait in line for you to do something. Can you be any dumber and non manager-like? If this Foodmaxx was in a non minority area, they would have their customer service in much better standing and what I experienced tonight just wouldn't be acceptable. But guess what? I'm calling the general manager tomorrow. Trust me. These so called managers MUST do better. It's a joke.

Customer service since the pandemic is hardly existent anywhere but many of the employees at this store are a special brand of disappointing. Many of the cashier staff are rude and spend more time talking to each other than they do keeping the line moving. I have encountered a cashier (I believe her name is Nina. Something with a N) at this location several times that is quite possibly the nastiest, most rude customer service representative that I have interacted with in a very long time. Today was no different. Super Bowl Sunday, I went to self check out to find her (Nina?) cradling the paper bags to her chest with both hands, while speaking to us customers like she was the Warden in a prison. "If you need a bag, I have the bags. They are 25 cents. They are not free. Select the option on the screen and I will give you a bag." She repeated these "instructions" several times in a tone that was rude, belittling, and clearly irritable. Her face and body language matched her tone. Unfortunately, someone missed a step and she had to assist them with paying for a bag. To her displeasure, she made her announcements again and included the parting message, "the bags are not free. That is why I said you have to select on the screen. I have made myself very clear." I quickly grabbed my items and left the store because wtf had I just experienced?? This lady is beyond inappropriate. She is angry and hates her job, and seemingly hates us for shopping at this particular location. To Regional Leadership, I challenge you to review the film from Super Bowl Sunday at around 4:20 PM for a front row seat to Nina's negativity and disrespect of your paying customers.

I used to stick with packaged goods, but in more recent years I've also been getting as much produce as possible at this GO. It's quite a bit less than at the other grocery store I often frequent, a family-run business in the Dimond district. It's not hard to find quality produce here, and they have a respectable amount of organics. The one thing that keeps me from giving this store a full five stars is the fact that they allow signature gatherers to set up shop by the front door, and these people thrust their their damn clipboards and pens in your face when you try to walk in. Today, when I politely declined to fork over my signature, the woman told me, "You should try to give a hoot about this," which was quite annoying.
