I especially like this brand when it comes to ad items, they almost always have it in stock; unlike their competitors! Price - Affordable, but I only buy certain groceries from this brand. Great prices on everything - no price gimmicks, lines at registers move more quickly than you'd think, lots of parking and next to a police sub station. Great prices on everything an no coupons, no apps, no club memberships or chronic and annoying emails or phone app notifications (looking at you Safeway). Prices on everything - meat, jam, cereal, bread is all decent without having to buy on a certain day or jump through certain hoops. I feel as if corporations using coupons is sort of like treating human shoppers as circus animals and seeing how far they will jump for a treat (a few dollars off). I do gravitate toward Walmart and Whole Foods - I think because there are no pricing games (WF now has a few with Prime discounts) and I value my time of not deleting emails for deals every day. Also the time saved looking for certain sizes of certain brands that fit a coupon. To me there is nothing more mentally exhausting than bargain shopping. No shade toward people who have extra time to do this - and who perhaps enjoy a scavenger hunt. Lines at the register you would imagine would be terrible. I've never found this to be true. I've also been impressed with those that work here. They are honest and friendly enough and pleasant to be around. To me in general they seem very hard working and down to earth. Lots of parking. The lot is sufficient for all the stores there. Notable also is the direct neighbor is a police sub station. For the longest time it was unmarked but very recently there is a new sign up. On the afternoon of July 21st, I witnessed an elderly woman being verbally abused and threatened by an EMPLOYEE at this location. The customer had come back to the register after noticing she was charged for more expensive items than what she actually purchased. When she brought it to the cashier's attention, the employee (who had been on a personal phone call during checkout) told her, "I don't care--get a manager." As the customer attempted to resolve the issue, the cashier ran from behind the counter, screaming at her, calling her a "white old b\*\*\*\*" and saying, loudly, that she had "no problem kicking her ass" and would be "waiting for her outside." A manager eventually stepped in and apologized, but the security guard laughed through the entire incident and did nothing to de-escalate or protect the customer. This kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable--especially toward an elderly customer. If this is how staff are allowed to behave, it's not only unprofessional, it's unsafe. I truly hope this store takes action to ensure something like this never happens again. read more

You can get anything you need at FoodMaxx in terms of basic produce at excellent value. FoodMaxx beats Safeway any day in terms of prices, food in stock, and staffing. Controversial but that's what I've seen. FoodMaxx even has the same brands as Safeway, but significantly cheaper and same quality. Of course, there are only select options for some of these brands but when you can find the right brands, the deals are great. Other reviews keep bashing on the customer service and cleanliness of the facilities but honestly if you know the neighborhood and shop here regularly, the other things are non-issues. Staff are friendly and I prefer FoodMaxx here over the Grocery Outlet nearby. read more

Come through for non-alcohol if possible only because you can use self checkout and it's generally faster - if you can avoid getting machine errors lol you know how it act up sometimes. Workers are nice but you know where you at - you in da hood so you gonna be entertained by the crowd and the whole experience. Prices are cheap, Grocery Outlet is cheaper IMO but GO got the random selection/inventory whereas FM probably has consistent/predictable brands/products. The biggest downside is checkout takes forever so try to come at a random time where not a lot of people are shopping and that is the ideal scenario. Social distance in place. Tons of cashiers getting everyone in and out quickly. The cashier I had around 6:30-7:40pm 2.23.2021. She had the warmest smile. She greeted me and everyone so kindly. I've never had a bad experience here and it's always easy to find parking at the center. This is a very solid store for reasonably priced fresh produce. The few times I've been here, I noticed there is a great variety of fruits and vegetables and even fresh baked goods. I would stay away from the dry goods, they seem very overpriced which is disappointing since everyone needs their dollar to go further these days. Nevertheless, the aisles are well stocked and the store is very clean which is interesting because the main employees I see are the cashiers. If you do not have a lot of groceries I'd highly recommend the self-checkout. read more

Cashier #205246, lane 4, 7/21/25... this cashier chatted with her mother the whole time I was her customer. she rang an item up double the price. So instead of being four dollars, she charged me $8.48. When I brought it to her attention, she became angry at me. Told me she wasn't going to return it. I could go to a manager. SECURITY said there is no manager. Somebody finally stepped up, but by this time the woman was following me, screaming that I wasn't giving her the information she needed. I told her I had spoken to her, but that she was on the phone the whole time with her mother. The whole time. At that point, she threatened to "I'll kick your ass. I don't care how effing old you are." And she just kept saying it. Glad it made security laugh. Also Being called a "old white bitch". This grocery store is another example of a love/hate relationship. There are good things about this store like the prices are lower than Lucky or Safeway. Some of the employees are really good people for example the guys in the meat department that I always chat with when I'm there. But there are glaring weaknesses to this store which makes it a specific-items pickup-type store rather than a one stop shop. For example this is the anti-Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. What do I mean? Well expect mostly processed foods, canned foods, high fructose corn syrup-having type foods, and anything unhealthy is sold here. It caters to a lower income bracket customer. Nothing wrong with that but fresh produce really isn't very fresh here. And you'll find palates of Sunny D instead of the $8 dollar 20oz fresh squeezed orange juice for the yoga mat, vegan, tree hugging crowd. On top of that, expect less customer service from employees. More chances of drama maybe due to upbringing or possibly the economic pressures that the clientele face everyday. Due to these factors I prefer to arrive before any other customers. Preferably around 6am or 7am. That way I can grab what I need and have little human contact. But overall, for certain items, Foodmaxx serves its purpose. read more

As inflation continues to rise, I continue shopping at Foodmaxx as the prices seem more reasonable. HOWEVER, shopping here does take me twice the time as I need to check the expiration date on every single item before putting it in my cart. The low price is because items are expired or a few days to their expiration date. I usually only get a few items here yet feel they are solid & affordable for these few items being the East Bay vegan that I am as I stock up on limes or lemons (good deal), bananas, Dave's Killer Bread (love this as lived in OR where company is from), tofu, & an eclectic range of Non-Dairy Milks (including Silk Soy milk as lived in CO where this is from). If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Like the other reviews state, avoid this place at all costs. It keeps getting worse and worse every time we come. Probably will not return again. For starters, people don't know how to park. There are no baskets available. An ungodly amount of people w/ their masks off peruse he aisles, and employees never say anything to them. Then we have the beakers- the COVIdiots - generally grown men- whose masks on are not on correctly, under their noses. I went into the store after a long day to grab strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and bananas, only to be faced with a terribly long wait because there were only 2 check stands open. At this time, self checkout was closed and a 10-15 items or less line doesn't exist, we're talking about Foodmaxx here. I decided it was ridiculous to only have 2 lanes open when there are two lines wrapped around the store. For real! I looked around saw 3 employees congregating, laughing, and having big fun, so I politely walked over and asked for the manager, all while stating that the lines were absurdly long and that they should have additional checkers working. One lady said, "I'm the manager, and I'm on my break. I've been working for 5 hours and the law requires us to take a break after 5 hours. None of that is up for debate, I get it, but you are doing the most and making yourself and the store you're supposed to be representing look extra bad. First of all, GIRL, PLEASE!! That's whack! If you're a manager, get the lines down, call some shots to make sure your store is running smoothly. Secondly, take your conversation to the back and stop looking ghetto and unprofessional standing in the front of the store, sitting on a disabled scooter, talking loud, and being unprofessional in your uniform, while your customers are clearly annoyed as they wait in line for you to do something. Can you be any dumber and non manager-like? If this Foodmaxx was in a non minority area, they would have their customer service in much better standing and what I experienced tonight just wouldn't be acceptable. But guess what? Always there when I need ya! Honestly I love big stores with big discounts. No matter what state or city I'm in, I'm always drawn to one. Doesn't matter how much you make, don't you love saving money? I'm just always happily surprised at how much cheaper my receipt turns out to be versus the other big grocery players. This store is spacious yet still clean and organized. Best to come in with a list, or an idea of what meals you want to make for the week! Great spot for stocking up on the essentials. The store is large and clean and has plenty of parking. The carts are nice and big. They offer great coupons. The produce seemed as fresh as any grocery store. They have everything anyone would want, in regular brands and a wide selection. Every type of milk imaginable, including pea milk--not my speed, I'd never heard of it before and never need to again, but it's an example of the fact that they have everything. And the prices are great. Not crazy, not too low to be true because the stuff is expired--it's not--but basically on par with other stores when they put stuff on sale. The place was sparkling clean and fully stocked on a weekday morning. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There were not a lot of cashiers so I can see it being slow, but it wasn't for me. My husband wanted to check out this place and he was content they had a Bank of America branch (ATM machines and tellers). Also, I ate that 2 pound container of strawberries (all by myself), all the Taylor Farms chopped salads have been eaten and I drank that 59-oz. bottle of lemon flavored ice tea (Sunnyside Farms) in a matter of two days, I needed more of those items. I like their selection of great deals on the fresh produce. They have great fruits and they've always been sweet when I buy them. The veggies are always good and vibrant. They have a great selection of normal grocery store items, everything pretty similar to most other main grocery stores, prices may vary. I like that they have good variety of animal foods, and the prices and deals they offer are fair. Every time I visit the lines are always long. Food max employees don't seem to care about people's time and patience. It can take a while at checkout time. They have a nice size parking lot. Most of the time the buggy carts are everywhere scattered in the parking spots. Is it so hard to put the baskets in the designated areas? Whatever the case, it's plenty of parking and they also provide a great selection of neighboring stores to visit. read more

I was actually able to do my entire weekly food shop that includes anything from dairy to fresh fish, cheese to toilet tissue for $80 under my regular shopping bill There is a vast choice of fresh quality products - I am picky!! Foodmaxx is the community college of grocery stores. Its basic options are affordable and you may run into some of the C students from your high school there. Get your GED in the produce, meat, and dairy sections. Load up on a few units in fruit and veggie frugalnomics -- featuring a cute little lesson in organics -- and make sure all your meats pass the expiration final exam. La Raza studies is actually pretty strong on this campus, with several courses in Pan Dulce, Contemporary Mezo-American Condiments and Spiceology, and Tortilla Studies. Viva la sección refridgeración! Quesos and chorizo galore! Get plenty wasted at the Foodmaxx fraternity: Hennessy Corona Hennessy. It makes me so angry that Lucky's pulled out of this location (God forbid you stay open in East Oakland, right Lucky's?) and left this neighborhood with a lackluster Food Maxx. I've been to the Food Maxx on Durant many times, right over the San Leandro/Oakland border and have never had a problem with it. That particular store is a-ok. THIS store just.... stinks. I agree with the previous two reviewers, that the staff here is unfriendly, and the store has this utilitarian feel, almost like I'm shopping for groceries in Soviet Russia. It now has a cold, sterile feeling - I hate people who are constantly crying about "big box" locations, but I have to admit that this store has that feeling. I was shopping with my aunt, who lives in the neighborhood, when they were in the middle of reconstruction, and it felt like the place was being downgraded, oddly enough, due to the overall feel of the remodel. And gee Food Maxx, if you knew you were moving in could you at least be bothered to put up a REAL sign outside the building, instead of a banner? Thanks for nothing Lucky's, and Food Maxx? Step it up. Just because you're in East Oakland doesn't mean you shouldn't make this place look nice and welcoming for the people living and shopping here. read more

People: Food Maxx is owned by the same company that owns Lucky. Surprise! When this was a Lucky, it was a ghost town. Now, it's always packed. There's a reason for that - it's less expensive! Granted, you give up variety (don't expect to choose among brands of feta cheese, for example) but hey! A 2-lb. block of Velveeta is $6.99. FoodMaxx offers great value on fewer items (they save money that way). As long as you understand that you'll be fine (and can stop whining! UPDATE: I now know where the MAXX comes from!
