This used to be my favorite grocery store to shop at for fruits/veggies & meats back when I lived in Phoenix, AZ. When i'm visiting my grandparents, I always come here to get some groceries, brings back so many memories! Staff is friendly and fluent in English & Spanish! Great produce and cooked food, but the other items are comparable to other grocery stores. The personnel is friendly and speak both English and Spanish. Busy and clean store. We heard that Food City had good produce. We found peaches for $.88 per pound. We bought a small, ripe pineapple for $.77. We also found really fresh cilantro. The apple, pumpkin and pineapple empanadas were well made with light pastry and tasty fillings. The rolls for tortas we bought were soft and looked fresh. We bought a few other items and then ventured to Dos Ranchitos kitchen. We saw them grilling the chicken outside and heard from our cashier that the chicken is sold with salsa, rice and beans. While checking out on the grocery side, our cashier was super helpful. She went out of her way to find my watermelon flavored Pulparindo tamarind treats. She alerted us that Doritos were $2.99 unless we bought 3 and then got the sale price. I left hubby to finish purchasing groceries to take a look at the cooked food at Dos Ranchitos. They offered everything from grilled chicken to tripas and lengua. The caldos or soups looked great, too. They have a salsa bar to go with the plates they sold. I was feeling peckish so I get the 3 rolled tacos ($.49 each). The man behind the counter said for $2, I could get the 3 fried rolled chicken tacos with the lettuce and sauces. So, I took him up on the deal. OMG, the crema and lettuce made the fried taco taste so fresh. The fire grilled pollo or chicken was seasoned well. It had a nice char and was cooked evenly as it was grilled flattened. The refried beans was flavorful. The roasted chile salsa was too hot for hubby, but was fine for me. The rice was okay. They gave us about half a pint of each. It was more than enough. I liked it and would definitely get it for my family, but I think I would be satisfied eating the rolled tacos. We like driving down from Peoria to this Food City because it's right off the 101. Convenient location and easy to get to. There's always a ton of selection in their produce department and pricing is really good. Quality can be off sometimes depending on the type of produce. Spice selection is great. We have eaten there a few times on the weekends, mariachis play which is pretty cool and our kids enjoy it. The food is kind of hit and miss, this last time we weren't too happy with what we ate and they were out of a couple of things we wanted to try. But they have birria and chicharrón en salsa tacos, as well menudo other awesome stuff available. An thrill a minute terror ride! From the second you exit your vehicle you will have to run the gauntlet of panhandlers to just make it to the entrance. You will have to remove your sidearm at the entrance so walk back to your car and run the gauntlet 2 more times to arrive back at the entrance with your spare change looted or your sense of security broken or both. You enter a world not unlike your own, but different in just terrible ways. Same fruit and vegetables but just off, maybe a five O'clock shadow on a tray of provocative looking squash. A feeling of unease at the sight of a potato that couldn't point Idaho out on a map. Something isn't right there. But the wares are the least of your worries as you suddenly find yourself with little room to move or breathe as the shoppers are not shy in the least. People that suffer from panic attacks will most likely become a sad bit of horizontally filmed freak out if they cannot control the fear. Swallow something calming before you venture deep into this post apocalyptic grocery store, take two because they are small. The money you save is not worth it. You have not stumbled on a secret treasure of magical bargains. You have found a scary place that hates everyone and hates itself. came to visit a good family friend who we call uncle brought us here. we happened to come in on a Sunday. this is your local locals supermarket. so inside this supermarket their is a little food area. where you can order food and sit down and relax... who wouldnt want to do that while shopping?! On Sundays they have a live mariachi band playing. four talented guys who have great tunes. while walking around i saw the prices of the produce here are really cheap.. especially compared to NY prices. for example avocados in NY 1 avocado can range from $0.99 to $1.29 each. This food city is RIGHT by my house so I should be able to run there quick if I forget an ingredient when I'm cooking, right? Nope! They are ALWAYS busy, which of course isn't necessarily a bad thing except that the people shopping usually have a cart full of groceries and here I am with 1 item and NO express lane. I love that they have the little cafe area with freshly made Mexican dishes like menudo or Caldo de pollo and you can even buy fresh green chiles that they grill right out front but if you go there to purchase groceries plan on waiting in line for awhile because no one offers to let you go ahead of them if they see you only have 1 item. Good pricing if your shopping. If you are going to eat, well that's a different story. The menudo was so greasy and the tripe in it looked old, not that great in taste either. This is probably the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I went to order food from the food court area, I tried to order some empanadas the lady with a rude tone in her voice says we dont have that and the menu is old... that they may not have anything on there. so I just walked away.. then I bought some flower tortillas... the brand was dos ranchitos and more than half were rotten.. so I called for a manager to let them know to check their tortillas and all I got was "and? ok come and change them out we are open until 11" not even an apology or anything?! idk if where I'm from I'm used to better customer service or what but this was the worst read more

I love grocery shopping at this location my whole family does, but after today I'm not sure how that will even be possible!!! I had the worst experience with a cashier this young black girl. She literally made me read the total amount on her screen by myself. I got upset and told my wife that she couldn't even tell me the total. When the cashier heard me express that to my wife she said and I quote excuse me. So then I let her know her customer service needs some work. So then she started calling me rude because according to her I was supposed to end the conversation with my wife so that I could say hi to her "my cashier". She said because I did not do that, that's why she did not give me my total! She started rushing me to pay or to go to another register even though the machine said please wait so then she yelled at me again and said well I cant read what it says on your side. When I asked for the manager and they asked her to step away she spoke back to the manager telling her good thing you came because I was pissing her of. I can't believe these are the type of employees Food city wants or needs. It is very upsetting that employees can't leave there personal issues aside to do the best they can at work!!! read more

I was disgusted by what I saw. An employee by the name of Jacqueline was harassing other employees in the kitchen degrading and humiliating them. I came to this Food City because I had gone to another one that's located on 35th and Van Buren. The service I received there was what I would describe as the best customer service I have ever received in my life. Unfortunately, I am unable to say the same about my experience here today. I came here with sheer optimism. I was hoping I would be treated with the same hospitality as I did at the other location. This review is for "La Cocina." There was no signage indicating where the line started or where you would stand to order. Here I am, looking like a baboso standing in all different areas waiting to be served. I stood in front of the kitchen. None of the 6 employees in the kitchen acknowledged me. I stood in front of the cashiers. There were 2. Neither of them acknowledged me. I stood in front of the bakery. None of the six of them acknowledged me. Finally, I simply stood in front of the food. I waited as one of the cashiers had finished. She didn't even bother to come over my way. Instead, her and her manager were having a personal conversation where she eventually took money out of her pocket and handed him cash. I have no idea what the nature of the conversation was, but here I was standing, waiting, and none of the 15 employees present acknowledged my presence. The cashier then made her way to the kitchen, where she had about a 2 minute conversation with the kitchen staff. I'm a patient person. I've been waiting 5 minutes to be acknowledged, waited the 2 minutes she spent talking with her teenage manager, and the 2 minutes she spent conversing with the kitchen staff. Finally, she passes by again. She would have ignored me completely had I not called for her attention. She looked at me and said something to the effect of, "tienes que hacer...." My Spanish is okay. I'm Chinese, but according to many people, I "look very Mexican." She pointed to the back of a 1 person line where a payaso was coming up from behind. I assumed she meant to tell me, "you have to make your order over there." She then proceeded to acknowledge the payaso that had arrived 10 minutes later than me. I had no idea he was a payaso until he was okay we jumping ahead of someone that arrived before him. Then, it was quite clear. So, unless you're a puta or a payaso, then this place is not for you. Avoid coming here if you don't have to. There are certainly much finer establishments in the city. I would have asked to speak to a manager, but it's hard enough trying to get through to teenagers I know personally. I left. I shan't return. read more
