I had always heard and known about Food City located in the Greenway Park Plaza. The stores were physically far from our house so I hadn't visited. I found myself in a plaza that had a Food City so decided to take a peek. Well organized store with some bulk items such as pinto beans (2# for $1), white beans and white rice. The store focuses on Hispanic foods and seasonings. I couldn't pass up the pinto bean deal. Lots of different spices both fresh and dried. A large fresh seafood department in the back. There were fresh tamales with three different types for sale. There was food service In the front of the store. The panaderia (bakery) featured many types of Mexican cookies and sweets. This store is right next to our gym so it's super convenient to pop in here and get fresh items when I need them. Although prices have risen recently, I am still finding that they have the better deals on veggies. Everything has been super fresh, the employees are friendly and it's well stocked. The scent of warm pan dulce, sweet bread with names as pretty as their colors, pulls you in like a front porch breeze on a hot day. There's a kind of comfort here, the kind that makes you slow down and grab a tray, even if you just came in for milk. Conchas, golden and soft with sugar-crusted tops, sit beside orejas that flake just right, and cuernitos that feel like they've been kissed by the sun. And then, the aguas frescas, lord, have mercy. The WHOLE meat department (at this location) needs to be replaced with workers that will help customers regardless of what race or ethnicity they are this is the 4TH time I've gone there and been treated like its a chore to help me. I would like to speak with a district manager about ways to improve the lack of customer service for interacting non Hispanic looking people. You don't have to be a butcher or work in a meat dept. to see that this meat's been tampered with. I purchase this meat on the 26th and opened the package on the 27th. The sell-by date was the 31st, but this meat has obviously been packaged and then repackaged at least once. You can tell by the darkness and discoloration of the meat, also there was fresh blood inside the package. They meat also had a snotty film on it and it smelled off. They tampered with it. I tried feeding it to my dog and he turned his nose at it, and he's not picky! You got me for $15 Food City, but it will never happen again. I have a love/hate relationship with Food City, but I have been coming here on a regular basis to buy frozen menudo now that I rather cook it myself than pay for overpriced and inconsistent menudo at restaurants. Usually the price is $1.99 per pound for the frozen one cut in cubes, and $3.99 for the honeycomb type. Both are good but I personally prefer the cubed one, not sure what is the name. The only issue is that some times they sell me a bunch of cubes of ice... It is still good but does not make me feel good as a customer, lol. Oh well. I will have to keep putting up with this until I find a better option. Staff is usually nice and friendly, bot at the meat department and at the registers. read more

3.5 STARS. Good place to find all sort of spices, chili peppers and hard to find produce when making an authentic meal from Mexico City. Owned by the same family that owns Basha's and AJ's. This is their lower end market designed for people on a cheaper budget. You may have to pick through the produce or the meats a little bit to find what you need or want. They get the funny looking pieces or shapes that the upper end stores may not want to carry in their displays. Picked up some Poblano Peppers and some Mexican Cheese to make Chili Rellenos, some hulled pumpkin seeds, tomatoes, and habenero peppers to make a Yucatecan Pumpkin Seed dip. Goes good with some Jicama that you can slice thin to use as chips for the dip. Also the ingredients to make Chicken Tinga Tostados which is shredded chicken mixed into a blended sauce made with tomato, onion, garlic, and chipotle in adobo sauce. Don't forget some Cotija Cheese to crumble on top for that restaurant look and taste. They also have a fun bakery with lots of Mexican goodies and an area off to the side that makes tortillas fresh while you watch. Not where we usually shop but they have what it takes to reproduce several of Rick Bayless's famous authentic recipes in his cookbooks. Located right next to the Greenway Square. Pork here is disgusting, made our house smell like S. Bought costillitas and I should've thrown it away right off the bat but cooked it and it immediately threw off a rotten smell. Bought carne pastor, the first time it the meat had bones no biggie, we bought again and it made out house smell like pig ass. Never buying pork there again, be careful. Bring back the OLD Food City. I visit many stores weekly (Sprouts, Whole Foods, Safeway etc) I visit Food City for chilies, tortillas and sometimes produce. I visited on 6/21/17, absolutely a disgrace that this store is selling rotten fruit and produce to the general public. I purchased 3 whole corns in the husk, returned home and found rotting in 2 and worms in the 3rd. Bag of small apples purchased, all had scaring and bruises on them. You can witness squash, lettuce, beets actually displayed rotting in front of the customer. Since these stores are owned by Bashas, I am just assuming the produce from other high end stores are being sent to Food City when they have reached a point of not sell able. I could also be wrong Personally, I think the store manager and produce manager should be immediately replaced. If contamination is this obvious to the customer, I can just imaging what the meat and bakery section is like. I am a recent Food City convert. I used to only go when I needed hominy in bulk and couldn't find it in the grocery store. I now shop here on a much more regular basis for 2 reasons. 1. Cheap ass produce. Seriously 8 cucumbers for $1 and 3 pounds of roma tomatoes for $1. Ridiculous. I have a juicer so we use A LOT of produce and Food City has 80% cheaper produce than any other grocery stores in the state. 2. Cheap ass spices - I recently made Puerco pibil and needed Anchiote, I found it for $2 in a small bag. The only other store I found that carried it was charging over $12, no lie. Food City is your typical latino market..I grew up in Northern NJ, where we had a million littlle spots that looked just like this one. The exception, is there is very little south american or carribbean labels..until now. I've had a hard time adjusting to food shopping in AZ-I've searched far and wide because most products are geared toward the Mexican population, which I totally get, but hey, there are other latinos out here too! I walk into Food City, and I'm totally overwhelmed with joy-they now carry most of the Goya line. For us east coast latinos...it's a blessing like you wouldn't believe. Sure, the prices are inflated compared to back east (why is nectar goya almost $2?!), but being able to buy them local vs having my relatives ship me boxes of Goya products is fantastic!! This Food City is a great location for east valley residents looking for good deals on produce, meats, and authentic Mexican groceries. Wide aisles, clean smelling, and chock full of Mexican food that anyone who is cooking Mexican food or is simply looking for good prices on high quality produce should check it out. On a side note, the chicken soup we make at home just isn't the same without cooking the broth with chicken feet. In the past, I've had to shlep all the way to the east valley or way into Glendale (or Chandler) to get them, but Food City has them. There's an older cashier with glasses she's Hispanic and she told another cashier in Spanish that she didn't like white people and proceeded to point out a white family who had came into the store. Food City has great prices on produce, BUT they don't rotate the produce, and when you reach in to grab something your hand literally goes through rotten produce. This happens every time! It doesn't matter what it is, chilies, cantaloupe, bell peppers, tomatillos, half the produce is rotten. And don't get me started on the pre-packed meat. I grabbed a package of thin sirloin steak from the fridge and the entire bottom of the tray was covered in blood. And there's no paper towels or sanitizer wipes available for customers. They have all the meat selections you probably won't find at the other supermarkets (tongue/hooves/oxtail). Plenty of queso brands and styles. I KNEW there had to be a good Mexican grocery somewhere in North Phoenix. With Yelp's help I checked out 3 carnicerias but they all disappointed. Finally I found Food City!!! This place has really good marinated meats that are ready for the BBQ. It's also a full-serve supermarket with an in-store bakery, fresh vegetables, etc. The staff is very friendly and they speak very good english. I enjoy going to this location to buy fresh fruit and their freshly made tortilla chips. The prices for their fruit is way cheaper than other places as well as their jalapenos.
