Employees are still damaging food products with the box cutters. They just cut open the boxes and place them directly on the shelves. I guess I'll have to just start taking pictures of all the food products that get damaged. Food costs way too much to be buying damaged food products. read more

Food4Less: 27 May 2021 What an amazing find - Food4Less an hour away. We loved grocery-shopping at the one in Vallejo when we lived on Mare Island. We even made friends with one of the checkers. It was a shame they closed. When we found one in Madera, we thought we'd give it a go. The produce here was just incredible - everything looked fresh and clean - and they have dozens of different varieties for several items. The store itself was sparkling clean and very well organized - and Miguel, who checked us out was such friendly fellow. read more

Good prices but often have expired and moldy stuff. Always make sure to check the expiration dates and look produce over good when shopping here. Just yesterday I saw expired peanut mochi on selves and super moldy strawberry boxes. read more

So my husband went in to pick up a few things for dinner and noticed a price discrepancy with the meat. He noticed thaT the two packs of smoked neckbones were different. The smaller pack was priced cheaper per poUnd $1.25 lb/ than the larger pack $1.52lb. When he brought it to the attention of the meat department, they told him this was there policy. *Hmmm, what the heck! When you go in to buy an item the price per pound for whatever your purchasing is the same. I.e. ground turkey, whole chicken, etc. I'm 50 and have never heard of charging a higher price for the same item but higher weight. When you see any sales paper, the price is listed per pound. It's really crazy! Last time I was here, it was 2001! I still know where everything is because nothing really changed. Madera is not very diverse, its mostly Hispanic, a few white and black people, and that pretty much it. Growing up, there was a rumor that an asian guy would shop here often! My friend's and I had to see it for ourselves, so we would hang out at the rally's across the store and keep look out. In the end, it was this young Hispanic guy that looked Filipino. That was my first experience with Food 4 less. Anyway, I digress, Food 4 less has had the same layout and products for the last 18 years. I really don't know if that's bad, but it seems to be working for it. Who knows, maybe I'll come back in another 18 years to still find it unchanged! I do find that one and half stars is a little absurd, most people from Mad-town, if they still call it that, don't yelp unless they had a bad experience, Madera is just not yelp friendly. Overall, food 4 less, could do a major renovation and probably open more registers, however, it was super convenient while I lived here, it was open 24hrs and stocked everything I was looking for! 3 stars! I'had the most horrific experience at #food4less in Madera last night. I went in to get a few items and was told by the cashier that one of my items was on sale. She said I'll ring you up and you can grab one on your eels out the door. I paid for my itms and grabbed my extra I paid for and walked out in no particular hurry. I parKed my basket at the door outside,grabbed my items and proceeded to walk to my car. Halfway there I saw 2 men running forward me froM my left, feeling threatened I looked around for help and 3 more men were also running toward me!! At this point I feared for my life and I began to tremble. They had me surrounded and I , this five foot nothing black woman was in the center trapped and confused. Finally someone asked me for my receipt I immediately began searching feeling myself about to cry as I explained my items were paid for and they should talk to the cashier. I showed my receipts and they said thank you we thought you were stealing. I asked did you see me steal, did you tAlk to your cashier? By this time I'm angry cause I realize I had been profiled and I asked to speak too a manager . They said no manager was on dutY and I could write a report, however there were no offficial forms so they offfered me a piece of scratch paper, I was too angry and trembling to write anything so I will go see the manAger jerry, tomorrow. I have shoppped here for 20 years I spoke to the cashier in the way out and reminded her she told me to graB my item after I paId for it, I spoke to a woman who was stocking in the area where I retrieved my item and asked if she was the one who accused me and another cashier spoke up and said he did, because I walked out and I had no bags. Now to be clear there are only 2 cashier in my area he and tHe one who Rang me up. did they not communicate???? So essentially you saw a black woman with no bags because it is my optioN not to purchase one, slowly walk out of the store , patiently park the basket and you assume shes stealing????? I feel like I was set up, profiled and attacked. I feared for my life at 9pm In a dark parking lot because you profiled me and did not communicate. I am angry, embarrassed and frustrated . Had a bad experience with Jared. No customer service what so ever. Did not greet us nor did he tell me anything as we left, he just handed me the receipt. Was also rude to an old Spanish speaking women. We stopped going there once Rancho San Miguel opened and Vallarta. Last night was an exception due to us being on that side of town. Yesterdays experience just reminded me as to why we stopped going there. JARED sucks. read more

Worked here years ago and still shop here. Would've given a 5 but standards have come down for a few years now. You felt the family oriented Feeling when you walked in before. Still clean and nostalgic. Prices haven't really changed much and neither have the variety of brands and items. Employees come and go due to the high turn over due to maybe the kids working here. Produce and meat department is usually good quality. Bakery is bland especially their birthday cakes. But overall everything is easy to find because there's not much change just in employees being moved around from store to store. read more

I would give this store a ZERO but unfortunately Yelp doesn't allow this! Come home to visit family from Oregon. We decide to BBQ and came to the store to buy some food. Totally overpriced and the worst part I couldn't buy beer because I didn't have a California ID. This was there store policy according to the store manager. She told me that my Oregon Drivers License was not acceptable. I would recommend not shopping at this store. Hope they enjoyed putting the $80 worth of groceries I was going to buy back on the shelves after I walked out. read more

Beginning of the month a state of emergency was declared and that puts a freeze on prices. Can only raise by 10%. Today 5 dozen eggs were @ $13.98 and when this started they were less than $10. That price jump is not ok or legal right now. read more

Some of the people at this place treat people very poorly, including management and it's not the cleanest grocery store...do not recommend.

This place is pretty gross. I visited this location last week, while in town visiting family. The late hours were convenient for late night shopping when the small-town boredom hit and we got the idea to start baking cookies. But, the store itself it just filthy. The first encounter with the filth was through sticky shopping baskets and dirty carts. I looked for a sanitizer wipe by he entrance and shopping cart area but did not have any luck. Is the store so cheap that can't properly supply said wipes for customers, as most stores do? I quickly opted to not utilize a basket or cart as I did not want to handle them any further. Upon getting into the store, fully, there was a weird/rancid smell throughout areas of the store... almost as if meat or produce has gone bad... or perhaps the freezers had not been properly cleaned for some time or were leaking. Whatever the smell was, it was not good. The staff is rude. The prices are fairly high for being a store called "Food 4 Less". Not good all in all. read more

EXPIRED FOOD!!!!!!!! These losers have the nerve to change the expiration date on their foods and sell it at their unbelievable prices. Came here last minute NYE party grocery shopping got some cookies and cupcakes for the kiddies and come to find out they're stale as this store and the cupcakes taste sour! Wtf !
