I drive an hour each way and pay Natasha good, hard-earned money to rip the hair off my jay jay. There I said it. You've got to admire something about a woman that can make you giggle and gossip while staring at your nana so intensely. She reminds me of my crazy favorite aunt. No, that's weird. Closest girlfriend? Ick! Ah.... my gynecologist, but more worried about how I look than how I smell. Oh and warmer hands. Bingo. First timers: yes, it hurts like hell. I have a bunch of holes in various parts of my body and I'm telling you - this shit hurts. Don't confuse a brazillian with the beautiful country of Brazil. Nothing about this process says warm beaches and caipirinahs. It makes you want to either crawl into the vag that you came out of and hide OR punch the lady with the tweezers. Yes, I said tweezers. She gave me wine though and I'm pretty sure it's against the law in 28 states to harm people that give you booze. Or at least it should be. If you're gonna do it - go for the gusto. It's a bit pricey, but trust me, it's worth it. Spare no expense when it comes to the goods. And get the numbing cream, which of course, I didn't know existed until AFTER (it gives you about 20 mins to booze up before doing the deed). Kinda reminds me of prom night. read more

I'm a spa snob. I've tried facials probably everywhere in the city. So far, the only one I've liked was IO. Well, the bf was coming back from Japan, and I didn't have an appt at IO so I took a chance at FB. And I love them! They greet you with a glass of red wine. Natasha gave me the most diligent brow wax you can imagine - I never realized there was anything to shape in my little Asian brows. She even got me through my first bikini wax ! The facial was also terrific... relaxing, yet thorough. It doesn't compare to the luxury of IO, but its definitely up there. I've been going through the process of electrolysis for 8 weeks now and I have to say both Ursula and Elyssa are THE BEST. Ursula is so funny and entertaining, but she also really cares about you as a client. Due to Ursula being on sabatical for a few months I've switched over to Elyssa and could not have fallen into better hands. On my first session with Elyssa we were off to a slower start as I have very course hair on my neck and I'm prone to ingrowns hairs. Elyssa spent about 15 or 20 minutes extra time on me and did so complimentary to make up for the time it takes to get just the right setting, needle type, and for lack of a better word pace. I thought that was so kind of her, as it's not customary. Elyssa is very passionate about her work and understands that for many of us this process isn't simply about hair removal. She understands that many women who have struggled with excessive hair growth often have gone through so many measures to get rid of it and it takes a toll on your self esteem as a woman. I personally have alot of damage on my neck and chin from tweezing and picking. (TMI I know) I'm coming up on my fourth sesson with Elyssa, (8 sessions total) and I've seen a significant change in the texture of my hair. I've gone from bristle coarse to baby hair soft. Elyssa also recommended a Skin Ceuticals mask which I used this weekend and have already noticed some of the dark patches of hyperpigmentation are begining to clear. Whether that's a result of the electrolysis, or mask, or me no longer tweezing...I don't know. All I can say for sure is that it's working. I'm seeing progress and real results, and for someone who has struggled with this all her life, I can't describe to you how happy and excited I am! read more

I would've never thought I'd use the word "blissful" to describe a bikini wax, but here goes: I got my "first time" waxing experience here and I will be back for more! When I called in for my appointment, Milana was completely up front and honest with me about whether I was ready so that she wouldn't be wasting my time. After I had convinced her that I was ready for a wax, she scheduled my appointment with Polina, one of the owners, and told me that she would explain to Polina about my concerns. Polina is fantastic. I'm almost afraid to write about her on this review since she's usually so difficult to book but she made my "first time" so enjoyable. She saw how I was nervous and she told me a story and I barely noticed when she started with the waxing. I won't lie, there were parts that tested my resolve, but she was so sweet and understanding and she tried her very best to distract me. It was over before I knew it. I have only had a few procedures done here, but I like the services they provide. And yes, I too get my lashes curled (permed). Next its tattoos ~ yes, I'm surprised with this too as I'm not big on body art... But the tattoo is semi-permanent, and lord knows my eyes can use all the help they can get, especially my eyebrows... I'm a spa junkie, and I can handle extractions, but Polina's intensity was just too much and I prefer the Jan Marini skincare line and Clarisonic facial regime. Flying Beauticians is a great place, but if you have sensitive skin of any kind, I don't recommend it. ________________________________ i'm so mixed on this place. I used to go here and debated coming back because I haven't found a good facialist since. The pro's --- the best looking skin I've EVER had. Polina has her own line and she really knows skincare and can make you look amazing. The con's --- THE PAIN! The wax they use causes me to break out in red rash EVERY time both bikini and brow I've never had this problem anywhere else and I think they are using cheap wax. I've sent friends there and they've had the same experience only WORSE because my one friend had Rosatia (sp?) so she looked like she had a sunburn on her face for 3 days. Polina is intense when she's on your face.....the woman takes no prisoners. The facials are relaxing for the first 10min and then it's go time with her. She jokes about how people can't handle it. Recently got a facial, my eyebrows done and a Brazilian wax ahead of my upcoming wedding. The facial was fine - relaxing and felt good, skin looked good afterwards BUT facialist pressured me into spending $150+ on their in-house products (I caved and bought half of what she was recommending). Honestly it was a huge waste of money. I hate pressure to buy products. Will not go back for a facial given this experience. It was my first time getting a Brazillian - I survived, the woman made the process as comfortable as possible and I was happy with result.  I made a follow up appt at her suggestion for 5 weeks later. Turned out that  I didn't really need it at 5 weeks but went anyway figuring I would just get a touch up.  Before I could stop her, she was waxing my stomach which barely has any peach fuzz and I definitely didn't want waxed - and a few other areas...total bill $90 which seemed like a total rip off considering she never asked me if it was ok, or if it was what I wanted.  I was also a little skeeved out by how dirty/dingy the cart was where the wax pot and accessories was sitting - - old wax drippings everywhere, rusty cart and gross trash bin. All they would need to do is spend $30 at Ikea to get a cute/clean table. I also got my brows done by Nona, which was probably the best part of the whole experience. She was super friendly and did a great job with my brows and I didn't feel like there was up-sell pressure. Bottom line - be explicit about exactly what you do/don't want waxed, otherwise they will just keep waxing and charging you high prices. read more

Absolutely love everything, from the staff to the locations and products. I battled acne for years and got facials on the regular. However, none of them were able to heal and transform my skin like Natasha has. It is more expensive then an average facial- but it's my face, my bread winner so I don't mind dropping a pretty penny. Instead of dreading facials, I look forward to an excuse of heading to Union Square, being pampered and truly relaxing. Okay: I am just back from my waxing. I love my new adoptive mom/ skin care expert. I read such good reviews of this place, that I finally caved and came in. This was my first ever Brazilian wax. I was a bit nervous, I will confess. It was of course, painful at times - totally unavoidable. But Polina was an angel. First of all, she hugged me, and promised she would take care of me, because she knew it was my first. Cute, cute, cute. Then, she worked quickly, distracting me as much as possible through the more gritty parts of the Brazilian, and the few moments that tested my resolve; she was sweet, consoling, and funny, so I was able to laugh through the ache. She did a great job, very little follow up for me (and I had shaved recently, so that is impressive). She was full of information for me, as I asked a ton of questions. I love someone who is willing to tell you everything; I like knowing what is going on. Finally, she was so sweet. We talked about all kinds of fun stuff, she actually listened to what I was talking about, shared some stories, and offered sage advice. We all know this is not fun - no one can make it painless, but if you are going to be in a little pain, this is the woman you want to be with. I got a fabulous Brazilian from Julia recently. I was able to get in on the same day (has anyone noticed my terrible habit of planning spa jaunts at the last minute??). After a fun ride up in an old-fashioned elevator (the cage kind) to the 9th floor, I found myself in a beautiful spa. Flying Beauticians is filled with natural light and breathtaking views. It is definitely nice to have a good view to focus on when you are having hair ripped from your nether regions! All joking aside, Julia was extremely professional and very quick with each pull of the wax. She spent plenty of time on me and did an incredibly thorough job. Flying Beaitucians is a cute little boutique spa downtown. I've gone there only once for an eye lash perm and tint. Their prices are reasonable and they have a wide variety of services. The only con that I have is that when I went for my lash treatment, Julia, who was very nice, had a tendency to leave my treatment room door opened whenever she left for a while. It was so disturbing especially when I was laying there tyring to relax. That was a little disappointment. Other than that, Flying Beauticians is a great little spa, I only wish it was a little bigger. I didn't really get the relaxing--environment feel when I was there though. I've been coming to Flying Beauticians on-and-off for the past 5 years for my bikini wax. Natasha is the best bikini waxer I've ever had!!! Getting a wax is generally a uncomfortable and not so pleasant service to get. I don't know how, but Natasha has a way of putting you completely at ease. She's professional, sweet and most of all SUPER quick! My wax never takes more than 15 minutes. After a horrific eyebrow threading experience (done elsewhere), I recently came in to have Natasha redesign my brows. This was the first time I had Natasha do my brows and she did an excellent job! She does my eyebrows, Brazilian, and facials. Everything she does is amazing. I could not ask for someone who is more friendly and professional at the same time. After going to Nona, I would never trust anyone else to touch my face. In general flying beauticians are extremely accommodating to your needs. Mila, the receptionist is in one word...AMAZING. She is witty, funny, and can schedule appointments like no other. When I have crazy requests to split up all my appointments in one day, or one week, she always finds a way to make sure I get what I want. Ok I was just swinging by to leave a bookmark to remind myself to review this later but when I saw the dismal state of this listing I had to act NOW. Oh how I love Nona, let me tell you sweet yelpers my story. . . I have been going to Nona for my brows for hmm, about a year now. Yes, it is Very expensive if you are used to going to cheap places, much more than I used to pay. But I had been living in SF about one year and hadn't been back to the same brow lady twice, such poor - lackluster results was I getting. When I first went to Nona, I thought, well I'll just get them fixed up this once, and then go back to doing it myself or keep looking for a cheap place. But now I am an deep investor, true believer, born-again saved and redeemed Nona Disciple. I don't let any one else touch my brows, even ME! (well of course I pluck the strays but youknowwhatImean) You see boys and girls, I have the evil combination of VERY sensitive skin/pores and seriously serious hair both in color & quantity (Greek decent - med girls youknowwhatImean say HEY!). Ungroomed I look like groucho Marx meets Freida kahlo. And EVERY time I have ever had my brows waxed I broke out in the same terrible disgusting reaction that I will not even go into here, no matter how gentle or how all natural xyz new groovy salon promised to be. But that was years ago in my youth, after results like I banned wax from my face forever. Soooooo.... So naturally, I have only ever let Nona use tweezers, no waxing, not now, not ever, nothankyou. And ladies, Nona knows her stuff. Like myself, she hails from the lands where women have mass quantities of black hair. She knows that unchecked, we look nothing like any typical USA male has ever seen or would touch would a ten foot pole. Sad state of affairs that this is, Nona has dedicated her life to finding that delicious and delightful middle ground where we conform enough to this society to accept ourselves and to get dates with white boys if we so desire, and yet we still maintain our exotic beauty, we have not erased our uniqueness. All Hail, the great and wondrous Nona, to whom I shall happily pay $45 + tip every 6 - 8 weeks for as long as I live in San Francisco. PS after a review like this, why only 4 stars, not 5 do you ask? I've been going to Nona for about three years now and she is absolutely awesome. Julie and Natasha Jr. do a wonderful job as well, whenever I can't get an appointment with Nona. I love Nona, however she now works on a reduced schedule (couple days a week?). She's cute, friendly, and does a great brazilian wax! I've tried the heart shape one a couple times and it's super cute! I definitely recommend this place and Nona, you won't be disappointed. Update 6/4/08 I haven't been here for awhile and recently made an appointment to see Polina (Nona's mother) this past Saturday and I am very very disappointed with how things have changed. Polina had an attitude, wasn't friendly, rushed through the appointment, and my brazilian was quite painful given that I just had one the previous month and was just going in for maintenance. She did an extremely sloppy job; when I got home, I ended up tweezing a lot of hairs she missed. On top of everything, she charged me $72 (20% premium b/c of service with her!!!!!). Before, Nona would charge me less if I went in on a month to month basis. I no longer recommend this place and am on the search for a new place....any recommendations? read more

I got an appointment with Nona, who based on other reviews was supposed to be AMAZING. She did my brows, and I was not amazed. For $50 I was expecting exactly what I asked for, and I did not get it. I didn't like that salon. When I first came there, I was forced to wear whatever my mom and grandma approved of. Also, when Mila offered me some coffee or something, I stupidly accepted it without even knowing that I would have to go to the bathroom during my upcoming treatment at the hands of Polina, who then came to get me, after which she led me to her facial room, where she would pop my zits. During the steaming session, Polina temporarily left me alone for her short break while I had to deal with being suffocated by the steaming machine. Then when she came back, that was when she started popping my zits, which really hurt. Afterwards, she applied some finishing treatment on my face (plus some 24K gold eye cream or something) and then I ended up feeling a horrible urge to go to the bathroom, and yet even though I could put my shoes on, I still had to go with the spa towel still wrapped around my naked body. Even though Polina did in fact do a decent job, it was still a terrible experience there. I don't think I'll go there again. read more

This is a two part review... that's why I took so long to write it, but at the end, Flying Beauticians gets ALL five stars.... First part: Eyebrows Getting my eyebrows waxed and tweezed is my treat to myself. As long as I am employed, I will get my eyebrows done, end of story. I have tried many different people for my eyebrows and Nona is the one I'm keeping. She is pricey and hard to get an appointment with (only works Mon-Tue-Weds), but it is so worth it. A nice wax job also keeps my own tweezers away from my brows, so I don't mess them up until my next appointment. It takes a few long appointments for her to get used to your brows, but after that the appointments are short and productive. Second part: Facials Last year my acne back, apparently my hormones are partying like it's 1999, and I'm 18 again (ok, 22). The last time the acne attacked, I fended them off with Accutane, but this time I wanted to try other methods. So I spent many hours meeting with dermatologists, paying lots of $30s in copays for retin-As, antibiotics, and pills to cure the side effects, but a session with Nona is what cured my zits at the end! I have had many facials before and NOONE has ever spent this much time with extractions. She squeezed the hell out of my face for literally 45 minutes, my total appointment was almost two hours long. That is when I realized that the previous facials I had gotten were more about relaxing and getting a mini massage. Disclaimer: the first facial with Nonna is NOT fun. But it's been two weeks and my face is amazingly clear! And yes, I did buy all the products she showed me, because you know what, they WORK! It's a lot of pennies, but worth every one of them. The ambiance of the place doesn't do much for me, but I rarely have to wait very long, so I don't care much. read more

This place wasn't bad, but it is definitely old school. I was getting electrolysis performed at this establishment and went about 3 or 4 times before I decided to make the switch to laser hair removal. I didn't like having to grow out my hair (esp since it was on my FACE) in order to have it removed. My skin was also really reactive to the treatments since I have sensitive skin, and my skin would be welted and red up to an hour and a half after the treatment. I'm used to my skin acting up after any type of hair removal, but laser only makes it slightly red, wheres the electrolysis was actually causing watery blisters around my jawline and other sensitive areas. The upside to electrolysis is that it IS the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal, where as laser just is permanent hair reduction... oh the technicalities. I do want to make clear that my skin didn't react this way because of the technician. My technician was very professional, thorough and sanitary... there was something that sort of concerned me though... I had facial jewelry, and I know that the electrolysis machines used galvanic current, and when I was in esthetics school I always had to remove all my body jewelry to get a treatment with the Galvanic facial machine because galvanic current can apparently break down the metals in your body as well as make your skin more susceptible to burning... my technician never instructed me to take out my jewelry, and I wonder if she was being ignorant or if the electrolysis machine was a BLEND and not straight galvanic current and my having body jewelry wasn't REALLY a contraindication... I guess I will never REALLY know. (Until I Wiki it in 5 minutes...) I was interested in getting a facial here at one point, until they recommended this totally over the top facial for my skin. I have sensitive skin, combination, relatively large follicles but I'm not as oily as I used to be, and I rarely suffer from acne anymore. I also have thin skin, a Fitzpatrick Type I (AKA I'M HELLA WHITE)... They wanted to do a Glycolic Chemical Peel with a really low pH and high percentage, then do a series of extractions and then all this other stuff that I can't even remember. All I knew is that if they did indeed do that treatment, what would be LEFT of my face would be burned, red, and dryer than a motherfucker! Being a licensed esthetician, I knew they were pushing ad-ons unnecessary to my skin type and condition, which made me weary. Also, the esthetician that recommended this treatment to me had extremely dehydrated skin... It's hard to sell skin care treatments when your own face is looking like the Sahara Desert. I'll probably come back here to buy another P.F.B. Roller when mine runs out. Unless I can find it on Amazon.com. :) read more

This is long overdue. I absolutely love coming to Paolina, she is the best facialist EVER!!! I have acne prone skin and discoloration. I used to not be able to walk out of the house without make up but now I can put on make up only if I feel like it. I have tried many facial places before but nothing as good as Paolina. Why? Because she knows your skin, she knows the texture, when it is sensitive, when you are on your period, everything! Also Paulina maintains my skin by seeing me every week until my next facial. For what you ask?? She checks to see how my skin is doing, if I have a pimple or two within that week she takes care of it..and that is for FREE!! No tip, no nothing..and this is not just for me but everyone. She treats her clients as her family. Every time I go to her she asks about my family, my friends my life. One instance I was going through a really tough time and she was not able to reach me so she got a hold of my mom to make sure that I was okay. I mean who does that?? People like Paulina are limited. Sadly I have moved to San Bruno and find it harder to get to the city. But I will be coming back really soon and make that special trip just for Paulina. She will be my lifetime facialist....until she retires, then I will probably move next door to her and bug her for treatments. Believe me, I have tried Proactive, Murad, over the counter, everything and nothing works like Paulina's facials and her products. Please note that neither the facials nor the cleansers are cheap but they are well worth it. People look at your face everyday and I want to be confident and not worry about it breaking out. i've been meaning to write a review for the longest time. and since i'm now supposed to be working on another task, what better way to postpone that than write a review... its a super-cute spa that offers every treatment you could possibly need in a spa...facials, waxing, hair removal, eyelash perms, tinting, mani/pedi. the atmostphere is friendly, and you don't have to feel like tiptoeing around and whispering as in many dayspas. although its not exactly a spa to go to for relaxation, it is definitely a therapeutic place. meaning, if your skin needs help, than you should def book a facial w/them. key treatments include: facials- i've seen polina for facials and not only does she do a superthorough job of squeezing all the stuff out, a follow up appt is always offered for one week later to ensure that all the unruly blemishes and dirt have settled and are gone for good. waxing- never a fun experience but the girls here are capable of making 20 minutes of hair ripping fly by as quickly and efficiently as possible. appts are relatively easy to book, and late evening appts (i.e. 8pm) are generally available. brows- i have a handful of people who i absolutely cannot live without. my hairstylist being one, the guy who soles my shoes and repairs those damn skinny manolo stilettos being another, and nonna. i've always had brows that grew in different directions. somehow nonna shapes and plucks them into beautiful arches. perfectly. once a month with nonna is enough to prevent me from plucking out all my brows in the process of trying to make them match. flying beauticians is definitely one of my favorite spots in sf...if only they took appt's on sundays. i'd be down there getting my lashes permed instead of here righting this review :) read more

I paid $40 for eyebrows by Nonna. This is TWICE the normal price you can get at other beauticians. Now I have one eyebrow shorter than the other. Nonna didn't really care and just dismissed me so she could see another client. Even the receptionist looked a bit shocked and tried to fill my eyebrow in with pencil herself! Nonna just said that my brow never grew hair at the end of my left eyebrow - that is not true; even if it was, why didn't she pluck the right one to match the left?! In addition, Nonna trimmed my left eyebrow leaving it chunky so now I have to fill and groom one eyebrow more than the other. The reviews for Nonna have been great under her Nob Hill listing. I've been going to this place for years (around 5?) and finally thought to write a review after visiting Nona the other day. She is my "vagina designa"! She is fast but extremely efficient. I mostly go there for my brazilian-light (called a "mars bar", think about it....). But I have also received excellent, meticulous eyebrow waxing and fabulous facials! I almost always go to Nona, since I love her and am very loyal! But I have been to several others there-including Natasha and Nona's mom, Polina- and in my opinion they are all great. The atmosphere is relaxing and laid back, you can usually get wine or water (wine is awesome before a wax, BTW-takes the edge off...) and all the services have cute names based on the planets and stars. The prices are not cheap, but still very reasonable for a great professional service in a nice salon. It's worth every penny--you get what you pay for, ladies!
